Recently Kevin Durant asked what hasn't he done to be considered the GOAT, and why isn't he in the convo? These are my thoughts.

Always felt like KD’s move to Warriors COMPENSATED for Bron’s move to Heat. Like Bron was EXTREMELY hated (even more than KD) but in hindsight Heat were loaded but not 73-9 Warriors LOADED. Like their were legitimate chances where Heat could’ve loss like to 2013 Spurs or where they outright loss. With the KD Warriors you knew they were UNBEATABLE if everyone was healthy.

I disagree if he went to Boston big 3 then yea his legacy would be ruined but forming his own squad in Miami created his own path and during those title celebrations he acknowledged he wasn’t even supposed to be there and had a bigger story in mind 2016 Truly solidified lebron if u remove that ring and he has those 2 Miami rings and that Bubble ring he’s no question top 5 but he’s not in the goat debate

Context is always put into play. I am grateful for KD bringing 2 chips to GS and helping beat LeBron's Cavs. Even as a fan of KD and GS, there's no denying it was an "easy move", given how GS was only 4 points away from the greatest season of all time. But, credit must be given where it's due. He won his chips and FMVPs.

The saddest thing is that he could have the dynasty of the 2010s with OKC and be seen as the bus driver of those OKC teams but injuries and trading Harden for being greedy really ruined that. OKC could have a ring in 2016 if he didn't choke and could have a ring in OKC if he stayed since Dipo was coming to OKC and Horford was going to join them. Hell a single ring with OKC will be seen as greater than both Warriors rings combined. A total shame.

@@kitothekito915 1st, meant to say 2001 finals. 2000 was Lakers/Pacers. Saying Iverson didn't do much after that yr lacks context. That's like calling out Dame for not winning anything in Portland. Go back and look at his rosters. He never had a contending-level team or even close. Replace AI & Westbrook (no disrespect to Russ) on that OKC team and they go on the run GS went on or better. His 01 finals trip was eerily similar to LeBron's 07 vs SAS. Neither should've gotten that far with those rosters. I also think if Philly got Rasheed Wallace instead of Detroit they could've won at least one title. Bottom line Philly squandered the entire career of a legend.

Also I have KD around 10-13th on my list, either ahead of Curry or behind Curry and it's always difficult. Here are his advanced stats and where he ranks. PER: 9th 25.25 Ws/48: 14th 0.2136 WS: 18th 166.95 BPM: 9th 6.78 OBPM: 5th 6.05 VORP: 10th 83.08 Now these numbers are not set in stone with KD still active so some will go down and some will go up.. but even as he is active, he has played 1,044 games which for a lot of guys on the all-time list is more than their entire careers. Just off these advanced stats, KD should be placed anywhere from 7 to 13. Obviously you can't tell an entire story with just advanced stats. That's foolish. But you can infer a lot from them. Such as, Jokic had incredibly advanced stats before being "noticed" by national media and now he is getting the attention he deserves. Was last year (champion) a breaking out period for Jokic? No of course not. He was an amazing player before he won the title. But with the advanced stats, we can infer a lot from KD as well. We can see that he is an elite all-time talent that should be mentioned with the greatest (aside from MJ/Bron), and the reason everyone got upset that he went to the Warriors is because he was a cheat code for that team. Not only did they have arguably the 3rd best player in the league (and maybe 2nd) in Steph Curry but now they add in the only player better not named Bron on their team. KD's arrival to GS made them a favorite to win the title 2 out of the 3 years he was there in the pre-season. Not a favorite in that they were the top of the betting odds,, but a favorite as in, you have to place more money than to get money back (i.e. had to place $150 to win $100). There has been no team in history of the NBA (not even Jordan's bulls), to pull that off. KD's legacy will go down as, one of the greatest players ever, but one who made the "softest" moves ever.

I was initially super excited about KD’s move to Golden State because the fit just seemed so perfect basketball wise, as if assembling a roster in nba2k come to real life. But then I witnessed game 4 of the 2018 Finals and just how seemingly joyless and hollow it was; the way the Cavs just submitted to the inevitable. It’s weird because you would want teams to assemble the best possible roster for competing. But when you actually build that perfect team and then see it play out in reality, it’s kinda not as fun.

If KD were to win with the nets or the suns now, those championships would definitely be more respected, because it was a team that had to be created and molded throughout the season. The fact that golden state was a championship winning team already, and he joined what was established also hurts his status to fans. He had to be better than Harrison barnes to win essentially. He’s basically in the highest tier you can be without seriously being practically anyone’s pick for the GOAT. Same tier as Hakeem, Dr. J, West, Oscar, Dirk. You could argue him above or below any of those guys, and depending on your priorities you could even argue him over some of the fringe GOAT debate guys like Curry or Bird or Shaq, though I wouldn’t personally. But each of those 3 guys, along with Jordan, Kareem, Lebron, Russel, Magic, Duncan, Kobe and Wilt have at least some kind of argument for being the GOAT, even if obviously a few have a much stronger one than the others. The only thing you could argue KD being the GOAT of is most impressive scoring skillset. In every other facet of being the GOAT though every one of those other guys I listed beats him in some significant areas, particularly as team leaders. That’s the one thing he’s never really been on a title winning team, we all know that his two rings were on Steph’s squad even if KD may have been more talented at that particular time. What adversity has he overcome? What significant challenges has he faced and came out of proving himself as one of the GOATs of the game? I can’t really think of any.

I'm one of those people who'd at least humor the argument for like 13 people as NBA GOAT. So if I humor him, KD is arguably the most versatile scorer (best scorer?), and he was the clear best performer on arguably the best team ever. A literal juggernaut of a team that we all knew was going to dominate as long as they were together, and he was the clear favorite for Finals MVP both times (hence all of the hate Steph was getting for a while there). And his career isn't over yet! His longevity, especially after that scary injury a few years back, is genuinely impressive, and were LeBron not clearly setting a new bar for what longevity means we'd probably be gushing even more about KD. But as Dom said... straight up comparing the resumes and stats and accolades... KD is super impressive but not nearly the same level of some others. He's my #13.

Essentially, one could see KD winning a Greatest of All Time 1vs1 tourney, but basketball as a profession is a team sport. I actually hold it against Durant more, that he wouldn't remain a cog in a great system, and had to go play hero ball elsewhere. A tragedy to team sports is having talent and dedication, but caring less about sacrificing for the benefit of team.

It's crazy cause I'm only 3 years younger than KD and his entire career he's had at least one player ranked above him as best in the league and that's automatically a disqualification for GOAT talk in my opinion. You can't be 3rd or 2nd best in your era and expect to be considered a GOAT

Dude just may go down as the best scorer in NBA history. He don't need to be the GoaT. He made scoring look effortless; he could dribble, he could shoot from every level (mid-range, 3, etc.) could blow by a defender, or pull-up with tight defense being played. But dude really adopted the "if you can't beat em, join em" mindset to the extreme by joining a 70-win Warriors team. For no reason but to get an easy ring. So no, no GoaT for you, Durant. At this point, KD would have to go to Minnesota or Memphis and win a championship with a raggedy team to even be considered a GoaT in my book. Going to Golden State was the stupidest decision ever.

People say KD going to GS is the same as LeBron going to Miami. Here's why it's not: OKC put 2 other MVP's plus an all defense guy (Serge) on the same team & timeline with KD to play with. Cleveland never drafted or added a single all star, 1st/2nd/3rd team all NBA or all-defense guy to play with LeBron. In fact, his roster (Snow, Gooden, Varejao, Ilgauskus etc) was downright awful. LBJ got that team with zero real talent to the finals in his 4th season at 22 yrs of age so u can imagine what he would've done with 2 additional league MVP's added in '04 & '05. No one from that Cavs roster went on to become anything of note after LeBron. Again, 2 of KD's teammates went on to win MVP's. Ibaka continued to dominate protecting the rim, his GM Sam Presti is STILL regarded as one of the great GM's of the league. LeBron had none of that in Cleveland. If he did, he stays and wins multiple titles. KD had everything a great player needs to win and then some amd he still failed then joined the team he failed to.

If KD won in OKC, it would be like going from 0 rings to 3 rings in the eyes of fans and media. Another thing is--he was with Kyrie and Harden and didn’t win and joined a number 1 seeded Suns team that added Bradly Beal. For KD to be looked at like LeBron, he would need to win chips in OKC, Brooklyn, and the Suns. LeBron has never played in an organization and not won a championship. The Cavs were one of the most mismanaged franchises of all time.

If KDs feet weren’t so big, he would’ve had a real shot to put himself in the GOAT conversation during the 2021 playoffs. That was the most people have ever respected and praised KD ever since he left OKC. He genuinely looked like the best player on the planet during that Bucks series. Maybe if he had just 1 star out of Harden and Kyrie not hurt, they possibly could’ve won it all.

Putting all value of championships aside. KD doesn’t even have enough accolades in general to be in the conversation. Only 1 mvp “only” 2 championships. The debate is between two guys where one has 6 ships and 5 mvps and the other has 4 of each not to mention the all time leading scorer in nba history. Respectfully KD hasnt done enough yet in his career to be considered in this conversation.

MJ: 5x MVP, 6x FMVP, 6 Finals wins of 6 appearances. 10x scoring champ. Lebron: 4x MVP, 4x FMVP, 4 Finals wins of 10 appearances. Most points ever, will be only 40K/10K/10K player. Kareem: 6x MVP, 2x FMVP, 6 Finals wins of 10 appearances. KD: 1x MVP, 2x FMVP, 2 Finals wins of 3 appearances. Also KD: "Why am I not in the GOAT conversation?" Sorry KD, but of those four careers one is noticably lacking compared to the others, and it ain't MJ, LeBron or Kareem. Even if we ignore how you got your rings and FMVPs (e.g. if you'd gotten them with OKC instead) you still wouldn't even be top 5.

i dont know if it's a combination of social media with the 2k game that confuses this generation on the understanding that you should never confuse potential with success. this is why I have a problem with lebron being even top 5 because lebron is in my list of most physically gifted players but the man can't win the championship at a higher rate than others. on paper LeBron should be the goat but in reality all that potential did not translate into winning the chip as much as the kobe and mj supporters would have liked. the chip is the most important thing. we cannot fall into the fallacy that the operation was a success but the patient died type of thought. it doesn't do justice to WINNERS. as far as kd goes if stayed in golden state and had 5 chips combined with his game there would be no denying he should be there but 2 chips far from it.

Championships are overrated when it comes to determining all-time rankings. KD could never have gone to GS if they did not have the salary freedom to sign him. 1/3rd of teams in the league have not won an NBA title (11, 10 if you take out OKC) and half (5) of those have not made an NBA finals (add 1 more if you include Brooklyn (previously New Jersey) nets).

Okc let Harden go because they didn’t wanna pay luxury tax I believe. Would you play for that franchise if you felt they weren’t taking winning as seriously? So Durant put himself in a better position to win, with an excellent franchise devoted to winning at the time. I think we are way too hard on Durant. He was a legitimate free agent then.
