A look at how Kevin Smith takes his responses to a question in "An Evening with Kevin Smith 2: Evening Harder" and puts his rants as an act in his movie "Clerks 2"

I think the Nolan Batman trilogy may have to take the spot once TDKR comes out.

Honestly, I believe that is my TRILOGY. Sure, I grew up with Star Wars but I wasn't introduced to it was after the original theatrical runs. The Dark Knight trilogy was something that really meant a lot to me, and TDK itself is easily in my top 3 theater experiences.

I love both series... Don't care about '' Which one is the Trilogy ! '' I enjoyed them both and will continue enjoy them both whenever I see them. This is all fun jokes. No need to take it too seriously. I respect the ''Original'' Star Wars and Tolkien + Peter Jacksons combined brilliance.

True I know he is indulging in hyperbole but the humour definitely has a barb in it. Smith has made this reference regarding LOTR too many times for it to be a purely light heareted off the cuff remark. He obviously regards it as a somewhat clever observation but I'm just saying anyone can reduce anything to a mere constituent for any movie. I mean the Godfather could be reduced to 'people with guns talking quietly then loudly' but you would obviously lose a lot in that interpretation.

Everyone in that audience is a slightly different version of Kevin Smith. Fat guy, fat guy with beard, fat guy with glasses, fat guy with beard and glasses, skinny guy with beard and glasses, fat girl with beard and glasses, fat guy with an over sized, heavy, stinky coat which he never takes off even though it is obviously boiling hot. They all love his boring story however true it might be.

@zxRAMBOzx Just about the beginning part of your comment; the original SW trilogy was low budget and was made much earlier so comparing visual effects isn't a strong argument. Star Wars is great and so is Lord of The Rings, if anyone should be accepting anything, it should be you accepting that both are great and not taking sides.

It's cute to see Smith make fun of LotR after all his antics when his movies got bad reviews. I like Smith, and nearly all of his movies, but it's silly that he thinks movie reviewers are bad but it's ok for him to give his opinion on every little thing.

I find this amusing because a quote from the second Matrix film - "Denial is the most predictable of all human responses" said by The Architect - sums this attitude up pretty well. The first sequel to the Matrix had a handful of great scenes. The second sequel was a complete mess though.

I don't think anyone who has taken the time to watch the LOTR trilogy actually believes they were three movies about walking. I feel like the anyone who suggests such a thing was probably just disappointed to find that they weren't as action-based as they'd expected, and therefore refer to them as "boooooring". The LOTR movies were more centered around drama than action, and that wasn't what people were expecting.

@johnnycoolguy955414 жыл бұрын
While Star Wars is the original trilogy, Kevin Smith is a little too biased to base an opinion. Because if he has seen the movies, he'll know that all three movies in LOTR have intense epic battle scenes. In the first one, Frodo and Sam start their journey at the very end, so he's wrong about that. The second one, it's one third of the movie, and the same goes for the first one. I know that he's a comedian, but still have some integrity when reviewing movies, man.

Jackie chan. The chinese guy who performs crazy stunts and intricate fight sequences. Are you asking who he is or questioning his relevancy to an epic fantasy movie?
@BelatedCommiseration12 жыл бұрын
I know he's exaggerating for comic effect but I think its a bit rich for Kevin SMith to moan about LOTR being 'just about walking' anymore than Clerks was just 'two people sitting down and sometimes standing up' the whole movie. Star Wars is basically a road movie, crossed with WW2 in space and do you say 'that movie was just about people driving starships...thats it?' No, because there are events occuring around them that heighten interest and further plot.
@NcChicken14 жыл бұрын
he just basically did randal's monolougue from clerks 2

@DamianRavenblood The books were good, but I was disappointed. Tolkien spends more time talking about the world, and the details behind everything, instead of the actual narrative. But there is some great imagination behind his writing, and the books are probably the most influential piece of fantasy in the last 60 or 70 years. :)

@squamish4244 People seem to forget that the LOTR movies were based upon Tolkien's novels, and stayed true to the source material (ie. more drama, less action sequences). I haven't made my mind up on which of the trilogies I stand behind yet, it's hard to choose given the massive time gap between them. I'll say this though - at least Jackson isn't planning on making a separate three mediocre films in the hopes of capitalising off of his success with the former three films.

Lotr will never replace Star Wars as the best trilogy because Star Wars was much better from a story-telling perspective. The 1st SW trilogy is successful because it manages to tell one cohesive story through 3 films flawlessly - without missing a single step. It was built from the ground up to be on the big screen - which is a huge advantage. Even if they had managed to create a perfect cut of lotr - theres a question as to whether or not the books were ever any good to begin with.

There's no contradiction here. Saying that he thinks the films are homoerotic doesn't automatically mean he thinks homoeroticism is bad, and writing characters that are homophobic doesn't make him a homophobe.

@MintNarcissus I respect what he said, because he was brave to say it. Because during that time, a lot of people weren't brave enough to put down "Lord of the Rings." But he not only publicly criticized them, he made a whole scene about his opinion in "Clerks 2." Lol!

While I certainly would've loved KS's ending to LotR, I maintain that the true ending of that movie is when Aragorn is crowned king and leads everyone in bowing to the hobbits. THAT'S the emotional high-water mark that should've ended the trilogy. It's all downhill noise from there.

He just forgot the several skirmishes and full blown war going on... It makes more sense to dispute Lotr not being a trilogy by the fact that it plays more like a single story divided into six parts, each book was divided in two for those who don't know.

@TheWhiteKnight89 Spot on Buddy.... Smith is essentially jealous of what Peter Jackson achieved with LOTR. And knows deep down that he will never get the same critical acclaim or success that Peter Jackson has achieved. He even went to the point of putting a whole scene about it in one of his movies!!!
