I had the privilege of learning a little about straight vs helical cut gears from a man who was on the team who designed the GM TH400 and TH350 transmissions when I worked as a builder back in the day. He explained the reason they went to straight cut gears was on dump trucks they were eating the rear planetary gears up and thought they needed the greater surface area to strengthen them up, but the real problem turned out to be the helical cut ones had a horrible thrust force on the back, and would starve the back bushing for oil, and burn it and the planetary up. What I am wondering is why nobody has developed a mod for the primary chain, which is basically the same size as a large timing chain. Seems it is the weak link, and replacing it with a gear-to-gear option would bullet-proof it, but make it loud, as you would need to add 3 straight-cut gears between the crank and clutch basket and avoid helical because of the thrust they create to the sides.

To me, Baker has always meant quality, not only in materials but also machining. Ive never had a Baker transmission give any problems and always shifted very nicely. Ive had several from old shovel engines to a few evo engines i always want the Baker on my bike as an assurance of longevity because i have always rode my bikes like i stole em untill the last 10 years or so. Quality over quantity, but those transmissions have always gave me both!

My Uncle passed last week and left me his seventies something Hardtail panhead. As was his custom every couple of years he would take it apart and put it back together well he was unable to complete it before he passed. We talked about getting together to really make this bike gleam but never got around to it. I'm learning a lot from your videos keep holding up the parts and explaining what they are and where they go. this week im purchasing a mechanics manual online but i'll keep watching. thanks for the videos.

Just found your videos. I like the content and the detail you explain things. What do you think of the Hayden M6 primary tensioner? I'm not excited about having to adjust the Baker manual every 5000 miles. Pulling the primary cover and replacing the gasket whether it needs adjusted or not.
@KevinBaxter4 жыл бұрын
Hi Ed. Thanks. You dont have to open the primary every 5000 miles. Typically, once a bike has 10,000 miles on it, the primary chain wont scretch much more. I'm finding I can go 15 to 20000 miles between needing to adjust. When it's past time, you'll will hear a very slight tapping in the primary which is the chain tapping against the bolt boss that's on the bottom of the inner, closest to the front. That clearance is very close.

Hello Kevin I watched your cam replacement video, it was excellent! I personally rebuilt my transmission 20,000 miles ago in my 2009 FLHX Street Glide and the main drive gear bearing is making noise again. At the time of the rebuild, no one mentioned the Baker updated final drive gear and Timken tapered bearing set up. Well I made a purchase from Baker for the main bearing kit, and the compensator sprocket assembly. I also purchased a primary chain from J&P Cycles. In my build I did use the Baker manual primary chain adjuster. My question to you is this. How many miles after this new build should I check the new primary chain tension? If I knew what outer primary cover to buy for my ride I would so. Right now I have to remove the entire cover to adjust the primary chain again. Thanking you in advance, Anthony C
@KevinBaxter4 жыл бұрын
Hard to say really....listen for a tapping noise in the primary. I will check at the next service at 5000 miles. From there, about every 10-15,000 works out about right.

I bought a used 2008 electra glide classic with 35k miles, and right off the bat had starter issues, but at least they gave me a 1 year warranty, plus they said they would replace the starter, which I found out they didn't replace it, but just put a clutch on the starter, I'm still having trouble out of it, banging when starting, plus hard to start after its hot. I really would like to have the Baker compensator and rotor, plus the bullet basket and Recluse clutch with manual tensioner put in, plus a new starter, instead of rebuilding one. Where are you, and what would be the cost for all that. I live in Florida. I've watched several of your videos now, I like what I'm hearing, and i would trust you with my bike. I've been researching Baker and Recluse, I'm sold on Baker, and partially on Recluse, which I've also heard good things about. I'm new to harley, this bike is my first Harley, I'm loving the bike, I just Don't trust the dealer where I bought it, They're snowballing me. What's your thoughts? And Thanks.

My Heritage Softail 88ci, (04), seems to have great low end torque. I go looking for 6th gear, even when I'm not on the open highway. I 'hear,' the engine revving up, at low speeds and lower gears. I often jump gears, like from 1st to 3rd, to 5th, when I'm rolling the highway. The engine torque allows the gear jumps, and the lower revs don't seem to be bad on the bike. On the open road, it seems to be doing okay, (no stock tachometer), I don't know if it's running (too)high RPMs or not. But even on the all stock bike, I could see where having that overdrive would offer the speed at lower RPMs and probably lower fuel usage... It's all stock, NOT a dragster. Just a street rider.

@KevinBaxter4 жыл бұрын
Runout pertains the same...pinion and sprocket shaft on crank, mineshaft on trans, etc. You have to remove the cover to adjust it. If you have more than 10,000 miles or so on it, when you install, it's unlikely you will have to readjust again for another 10 to 15000 miles. Besides, it's one gasket and a few bolts...only takes a few mins to pull that cover and reinstall.

@KevinBaxter3 жыл бұрын
the comp is unrelated to shifting directly....its a sprocket and spring pack on the crank that the primary chain goes around...its job is to absorb engine pulses and reduce vibration and shock load to the rest of the drivetrain. I dont agree with comp elimination unless going to belt drive primary.

Harley-Davidson is still using old outdated technology. Why Harley-Davidson would put a chain primary on the new Milwaukee 8 motor is beyond me. They did eliminate the twin cam and those dam tentioners in leiu of 1 chain and 1 tentioner easy access ok that good. But the 3 hole, 3 oil drain is ridiculous here in 2020 .

I can understand your perspective...however...folks are far more likely to complain than compliment online. I've never had issue with them...even decades ago before I became one of their top installers. I think they are better suited for their dealer network. I believe it's always best to purchase parts thru a dealer anyway...if you have a problem, your dealer can be your advocate and most often make things happen.

Funny, l've been riding Harley Davidsons for over 48 years now and haven't had a bad one yet. In my experience the bikes people complained about were not properly maintained, had people working on them not doing good work, etc.,etc. The bikes that have been properly maintained, seems like they just want to keep running mile after mile. I'll use my bike as an example since it has over 101,500 miles on it as I sit writing this. Still runs extremely strong and am not afraid to jump on it and ride cross country anywhere I feel like going. This particular H.D. is a 2005 Heritage Classic. Give me a shout when you can say this about any motorcycle your riding, we'll meet up and go for a putt👍😎

@@joesorenson200 You sir get a "thumbs up". I too love fixing and maintaining my bikes. I love my Superglide, i just wish i wasn't forced to put so much time and money into it for it to run right, stop, and be reliable. If my track 675r had a crank runout like my Harley it would explode :)
