@flacoface4 жыл бұрын
@DMD 1. the bottom line is the purchase price, tax, etc. (for etching, which I refuse to pay for). 2. I estimate payments based on the above number, for example: $20,000 at about $400/month, then $4,800/year, should take about 4.5 years to complete payments. 3. Financing is largely based on your credit. That said, I usually deal with an outside lender and pre-approved prior to purchase. In one of Kevin Hunter's videos, he says not to let the dealer know that you are paying cash, that's where the "bottom line" is important for me. 4. One company (that I know of) will loan you cash to purchase a vehicle, and you can put the vehicle in your name with no lien holder. Also, their interest rates are great. You likely must have really good credit for this. If the dealer can beat my lender's interest rate, then I'll use their financing. I hope that I answered your questions.

The "Most Customers" phrase is taught as a psychological mind trick... that people want to be a part of "doing the right thing." If the salesman says it, you are more inclined (on average) to do what most people are doing. They are just playing the odds that you'll like it better if you think others like it. It doesn't have to be true at all... they will say it anyway.

Kevin offers a lot of how to's and specifics which is great, but more than that he cultivates confidence and an underlying attitude of who is in control. I see now how in the past, I have become distracted by a salesman asking a question I didn't expect. Now, when focused on what I am there for, I don't feel like I have to answer every question. It is easy to sidestep or ignore or redirect a salesman to my goal and not be lead towards his goal. It's a beautiful thing.

Also, nobody should run your credit, but it's critical that your salesperson knows your credit situation so that they can show you the proper vehicle in order to not waste your time. Imagine spending 2 hours at a dealership to find out your looking for an advance $50k more than what you qualify for? The rest of the video was pretty good.

As a car salesman I have a different perspective on the financial questions. So many people show up to the dealership financially unprepared to purchase a vehicle (often unknowingly, but not always), and a few basic questions can save both parties hours of precious time. Many people have repos, bad credit, or are so far upside down that it's just not the right time for them to purchase. If you don't ask you can often risk the customer getting mad at the salesman for "wasting their time!" when they get denied in finance later.
@Jillousa5 ай бұрын
In my late twenties, I walked into a dealership just to look. I specifically told them I did not have the finances to purchase. They told me that they would find a way to make it happen. The scam was that they would give me a check for $3,000 to cover my insurance and monthly payments until I got a different job. I called my dad and really needed my dad to tell me no but my dad gave me this "I don't know what to tell you honey". Seven different guys spoke with me so the deal just kept getting more and more confusing. It took 7 hours for the loan to be approved. We were getting to the last point of talking to the financial person and he was the only person that was slightly honest and I was able to see what was happening on paper ($3,000 added to the cost of the car and I wasn't going to be given a check until later???). I got sick to my stomach and went to the bathroom and prayed and God gave me courage to stand up to the bullies. I went back in there and told them I can't do this because I know I can't afford it. The yelled at me they screamed at me and they threw me out of the dealership and kept the spare keys to my car. I drove home so thankful that God spared me from a bad deal and made a covenant with the Lord that no matter what happened I would wait for the right car. A few months later I had to take my car to the junkyard. I was so happy to be spared that I didn't care that I was traveling 3 hours extra a day to work in the Chicago suburbs using Chicago Transit in crazy cold weather with a half mile walk from the bus stop to my job. Then the door opened for me to purchase a car from someone who needed to sell it to stay on the mission field. The car was 1/3 of the price that the one had at the dealer. I wasn't asking for it but it was the same make model and color and probably not many miles and not many years off from the one I said no two at the dealer. I turn on the radio in my car and it was to K-Love. People across Illinois were praying for me to get a car and people were praying across Europe for the car to sell for that missionary. Shortly after I got that car, I got laid off from my job and had severe financial problems. Because the car was so much less than this one at the dealer I was able to make every single payment and keep my car during that difficult time. The car after that didn't really desire to go into a dealership but that is where I felt the Jesus led me. My friend brought me to a place that had a great reputation and I was treated very well and was very happy with my deal. I also knew that the salesman because it worked out together at the CrossFit gym. Everything they said that they were going to do for me they did. With my car was just a few days and a few miles outside of their warranty on used cars, they still took care of me on a repair that came up. Just sharing some of my lessons of growing up and making these big girl purchases!!! I'm now in the need of another car but I've definitely been a lot wiser than when I was younger.

Its very simple ppl, if you do not feel comfortable, just move on. Its a very big decision/2nd biggest one of your life, next to a house. You shouldnt feel rushed or pushed at all. There should be zero pressure to BUY TODAY! A salesman/woman MUST have your best interests at heart. This is pretty easy to detect...All those lines they feed are just that..lines. The sincere, honest and genuine salesperson should always win out. As a salesman in the car business for 20 yrs, and now real estate for the past 20 yrs, I found that patience and general care for the client was the best thing one could give. Its not about that sale today, but rather the many sales after ( referrals too) if you earned a clients trust!

Car salesman here. I agree with many points in this video, especially those concerning insincerity. Where I disagree to an extent is asking customers questions pertaining to monthly budget, price, etc. Our goal is to make a deal and sell a car, and yes, make a profit (SURPRISE IT'S A BUSINESS!). It is comical how many customers don't realize they won't be able to afford the payment on a $50,000 car. Gathering information about what the customer wants early in the process helps me to make better use of the customer's time and mine by looking at a vehicle that aligns with their needs. There's a way to go about the information gathering phase without being a bad/sleezy salesman. Additionally, many customers, unlike you Kevin, won't tell you what they want, which can lead to a lengthier negotiation. If I know what the customer wants before the negotiation, I am able to present this to my management team and, if it makes sense to us a business, we can meet their goals on the first pencil, thus making the process very smooth and easy for both parties. Now, I do work for a dealership that operates more ethically than most I can confidently say -- family owned for 100 years -- and I have had poor experiences shopping for cars myself, so I understand why a probing salesperson who doesn't effectively ask these questions could be a red flag since this could potentially give the dealer the upper-hand in the negotiation. MY ADVICE: Don't necessarily leave if a salesperson asks you what you want to pay monthly or what your budget is. Instead, BEFORE YOU GO TO THE DEALERSHIP, find out what current interest rates are so that you can calculate payments for various vehicle price ranges. Then, look at the prices for the car(s) you want to buy online, and determine what you would like to pay for the car when you go into the dealership. Then, using the payment calculators again, plug in your desired sales price for the vehicle again using the interest rate you know you should get based on current rates and your own credit score. BOOM! Now you have the exact payment, sales price, and interest rate that you want for your car deal. If you present a reasonable offer, a good dealer will always accept (of course unless someone else offers full price while you're there, LOL). In conclusion, good video, but as long as you know what you should be paying for your new vehicle, don't let the dealership asking what you expect monthly / budget wise deter you.

Many dealer emploiyee's confuse our message with having a problem with a dealer making a profit. No surprise, it's a business. What we take issue with isn't profit, but rather the often lying, cheating, and yes, even stealing from customers that dealers can be guilty of. The deceptive side of a common car dealership gets very ugly. It's THAT, not profits, which isn't a surprise to anyone not working in a dealership. Does that clarify things for you? You make some good points. Thanks for stopping in to comment!

You have some great points as well. I think as a customer it's important to see how many red flags there are before giving up. I made the mistake of getting too far into a deal that I knew I could not afford. I walked out on the last minute The guys were so mad at me they threw me out of the dealership and yelled at me and screamed and kept my spare keys.. I was in my early twenties a single lady and learned so much from that experience. For months I got letters from many banks saying they denied the loan because the cost of alone exceeded the cost of the car. The issue was that I was just looking I was not right to buy that day and felt coerced into the purchase. It was too good to be true.

I didn't have to walk into a dealer to spot one. I called on a used F150 to set up an appointment for a test drive. I was told by the sales person that his dealership wasn't a good starting point for test drive a used truck because they don't keep many on the lot and sell fast. When I said I wanted to stop in on Saturday (the call was on Tuesday) because I can't get there before they close during the week, he immediately said the truck probably won't last until the weekend. High pressure on an initial phone call. Looks like I will be looking for a new sales person. Thanks for the assist on this one!

If you really want to shop at a dealership, which I don't recommend for anything other than a test drive, look at their website before you go there and pick out a salesman who seems the most like you. Then ask for that person when you get there.

Thank you! You're doing the right thing. Think about something. If someone came and told you that you needed to move, you'd first ask why? Then, if you did indeed need to move, you'd think about where. You'd take your time, and then go look at some places, see what fits in your budget, find out if other people are having a good experience. If you had to sign a contract at your new place, what's in it? Are their penalties? Extra expenses? What's the cost if you leave before the contract runs out? Buying a car is just as big a decision as moving. Quite often, waiting and considering your "next move" is the best thing you could have ever done. Your future self will thank you for giving it some more thought.

Hi Kevin! I agree with all you said. However, I wish to offer my approach on dealing with "bad salesmen." My approach is not to worry about the salesman. I will control the conversation to get the info I need, demo the potential car, and work with this person through the sales process. Knowing the games they play keeps me in control. (Learned a lot with your show!!! ) ( Worked in a dealer as a tech for 15 years.) After all, it's the sales manager and the f&I guy you need to deal with... the sales person is just the go- between. Also, this dealer may be more willing to "deal?" I would never know if I bailed on this dealer... Food for thought..... Thanks, Kevin and Liz!

I recently met a bad car salesman. Here are some of what he did/didn't do - 1. Was not wearing a mask (no sign on the door of the dealership saying masks are required 2. Kept me too long, by taking my key for the estimate for trade in value 3. Had to "speak" to his boss three times 4. Kept answering the phone while I was talking to him (rude) 5. Kept pushing me for a decision It was this last one that got me to finally leave. I did tell him later, in a text message that he FLUNKED the visit and I wouldn't EVER buy from them.

I’m wanted to test drive two different dodge caravans one with higher level trim the other with a lower level trim, the salesman appeared rather annoyed and exclaimed why do you want to test drive two different vans. I just was inquiring about a car at a local dealer. I asked if the could shave a little of the doc fees etc...."Sir, this is the cheapest (insert model here) you will find. Other dealerships are marking up over MSRP $3,000-$5,000 dollars. I'm just hoping the car is still here when you are available to come in." This is totally untrue and I sent him a screen shot of 20 some odd exact vehicles all within $10 of each other. I'll bet Ambien has a kiosk in the breakroom at car dealers. Cheers.

I remember a dealership that wouldn’t let us test drive a vehicle until we completed a credit app. The salesman walked away and I started to fill out the application. Then I thought about it. I got up, took the application and found the salesman sitting with his feet up on his boss’s desk (how cliche is that), got his attention, tore the app up in front of him and we walked out.

The first salesperson I interacted with on my car shopping journey was an older man who's been in the business for 20 years. During the entire test drive he asked me questions and would answer any questions that I had for him. The back and forth was there, and I wish I could have purchased a car from him... if only the price wasn't so high and his dealership didn't charge an extreme markup. Still he was polite, and applied no pressure whatsoever. The next guy I went to visit was probably not the worst guy, but he seemed very inattentive. When I asked him any questions he gave me short abrupt answers, and never went into much detail about any of the cars I was interested in. He was also the only one that didn't look professionally dressed. He was wearing shorts and a t-shirt. Nothing wrong with that, except he was the only one dressed like that while the other salespeople had long sleeve button-ups or uniforms. He then proceeded to ask for my details about how I'm going to pay for the vehicle. Told him I was just looking to test drive and inquire, and he brought his manager over to apply some pressure. Never going to that dealership again, and recommending my friends and family to stay away from them.

My wife and I were looking for a double wide in North Carolina, and we walked up to one place where a salesman stepped out the door as we walked up and said "Fate has brought you here!" He had the plaid suit too. We said "No, we saw your billboard out front and thought to stop in and see what you got". Two other salesmen standing nearby shook their head when they realized what a loser they got! A Ford dealer tried to sell us a van, and said "My baby needs a new pair of shoes". That killed it as quick as the bad van he showed us. I also hate it when a salesman says "I need to talk to the manager, I'll be right back" and then goes out into the parking lot to chat on his phone for the next ten minutes leaving us hanging.
