Small note: hall effect sticks aren't "new". The Dreamcast and Saturn controllers used them. Since stick drift is becoming more prominent though the return of their use is just more desirable and therefore marketable.

Besides, it's not like you don't have either your phone or a PC (and yes, the vid neglected to mention it, but the software is for your PC, too) at hand in almost every place you'd use a controller in. The accuracy and clarity of the software is a definite win for 8bitdo here for me.

Its worth pointing out that for use outside of switches, the 8bitdo is in a different league to the kingkong because it has 2.4ghz connectivity as well as bluetooth. Bluetooth has noticeable lag compared to 2.4ghz, and there is no getting around it. Fine if you are just using the switch, and a 2.4ghz connection isn't an option but there are large user bases that also play on PC that will be looking at these.

freaking FINALLY SOMEONE IS GIVING JUSTICE TO THE GULIKIT CONTROLLER! I couldn't even try to explain how unfair I felt that people are praising the 8bitdo controller without even mentioning the King Kong Pro 2. Something that you missed that may be important is that King Kong Pro 2 does NOT use the traditional rubber membranes in the Face buttons and the shoulder buttons. I have gone through 2 8bitdo controllers where the rubber membranes got torn, making the buttons stick a lot, and ~~replacements are not on sale.~~ (Edit: They're available now in their official website . Thanks to Pars that commented on this) King Kong pro have weird keyboard-switch-looking parts that are easily replaced and are not prone to tearing! making them last more for people like me who press buttons a little too hard!

And people should know: the 8bitdo controller literally uses HAL effect analog sticks made by Gulikit. Also, Gulikit is working on a handheld analog stick that works with HAL effect...so that could potentially mean HAL effect joy-cons in the future. With that said I do love the 8bitdo Ultimate. The docking station and the fact that if you plug the docking station into the console it will just work over 2.4ghz. I have multiple Switch consoles in the house and the fact it just works with whatever Switch is sitting inside the dock (without needing to mess with pairing) is very nice.

Got my King Kong yesterday and after about an hour of use I decided I had to return it. All of the material feels great, all of the buttons and sticks and everything feel great on their own, I had no problem getting any of the features to work on my Switch. The ONLY problem I have with it is completely a personal one. I've never thought of my hands as being particularly big or small, but the King Kong feels like it was ergonomically designed for people with BIG hands (I guess that would make sense, given its name). When I hold a controller, the most natural positioning is for my thumbs to use the face buttons and joysticks, my index finger to use the shoulders and triggers, my middle finger to be open and used as support for the controller, and my ring and pinkie finger to curl around the grip. Using this positioning it feels like I REALLY have to strain my hand to hit the R button specifically without shifting the whole controller every time. Alternatively, a slightly different positioning I tried had me forced to click the R button with the second joint of my finger rather than the tip or even the 3rd joint right before the tip. The reason this is a problem for me for the R button specifically is because the left analog stick is higher up and therefore closer to the L button, while the d-pad doesn't stick out as far from the controller. It's a shame, I really like everything else about the controller, but that one thing makes it just not comfortable, and that's the most important thing in my opinion.

I just bought a new controller and had this video recommended. I was also trying to decide between the KingKong Pro 2 and the Ultimate. It was a tough call because they were both really, really good in their own ways. But yes, the buttons on the back and that really nice charging stand made me pull the trigger (pun intended) on the Ultimate. I think the KingKong Pro 2 would have been more comfortable for me, but if the Xbox controller is my 9.5, the Switch Pro is a 9.0, and this might be an 8.9. It's a bit heavier than the Switch Pro. Also, I love how removing the Ultimate from the stand will turn it on, and then it turns off when put back onto the stand. Just really nice little features. Using triggers on the Switch is a bit weird since most of the time it's expecting a button, so I might remap the back buttons to the triggers maybe. Really the biggest disappointment for the Ultimate for me is on the PC side: it only allows you to remap the buttons to another button on the controller rather than a full keyboard remapping. I have a key I otherwise don't use just for push-to-talk in Discord. Having a back button mapped to that would be really, really nice.
@qwormuli77
@qwormuli77 Жыл бұрын
You can remap that in most emulators or Steam separately. It's not as ideal, as it needs one extra step, but it's easily doable. And if all else fails, almost any mapping software (AutoHotkey etc.) can answer that need.

I wonder why majority of popular youtuber didn't test the gamepad longetivity & in depth? If you watched smaller reviewer in youtube, they're honestly test the gamepad deeper than this video. For example; Gulikit KK2 Pro had serious problem with bluetooth lag & stucked button. Both of the problem could be solved by buying 2.4ghz dongle & replacement switch button. I experienced it with just 2 months using it casually (avrg 2 hour gaming daily) . Both of the controller are anti drift ( because using Gulikit analog halls effect) but, how about the button switch quality? Hows about the guarantee? Hows about the repairability? How easy to change the button or battery?

I have both of these and have used them pretty extensively. I have more experience with the Gulikit because I've had it for much longer but I've got probably 100 hours on the 8bitdo. Just wanted to touch on one thing because I think Kevin covered pretty much everything else and that is the "wake from sleep" functions both controllers have. The 8bitdo has some serious issues with waking the console from sleep for me. It almost never works and it really pisses me off, and entire forum threads full of people have the same problem. The Gulikit works every time although it took awhile to remember to turn it on or put it in the right input at the top (I use it on my PC sometimes). Also, and this might just be a fault on my unit, but the 8bitdo often displays a false battery reading to my Switch. When I've left it on charge overnight it will show as being mostly empty from the night before and sometimes takes awhile to display the correct charge. Doesn't actually interfere with operation but is a little annoying.

As for these two controllers, I'm not sure if one is favourable over the other for a game like smash as they're both quite similar. I'm inclined to say the Gulikit simply because I like the very clicky, tactile BAXY buttons, but I think the 8BitDo has better shoulders and when a few frames per second are the difference between a successful block of getting hit that might make a difference.

Because of the fact that sticks have to be wiggled back and forth they can eventually become loose and that will lead to drift regardless of hall effect sensors were not. The only way to truly eliminate drift is to put trackpads on the controller. The only thing that happens to them is that over time the coating on the top starts to wear out making them smoother.

After using the KingKong Pro controller, I have to say, im not too fond of the sticks. Not because of the hall effect technology though, that's perfectly fine, but the sticks themselves seem too sensitive. For example, trying to run straight forward in a first person shooter is almost impossible, as any slight movement of the stick on the X axis, causes you to turn ever so slightly. I feel this controller would have benefitted MASSIVELY from an octagonal gate, similar to the gamecube controller.

Also the buttons are very soft and mushy and have this not-so-great texture in them due to the tiny gaps in the button label injection process. The paddle/grip buttons are really good though. For me the software side is a disaster: by default the rumble is not tolerable and changing it requires pretty much the software. Also the paddle/grip buttons are not assigned and cannot be assigned without the software. Mac users get firmware updates but no software for binding the buttons. Linux/Steam Deck (8BitDo advertises the deck as supported) users get only the out of the box xinput pad; no custmization or firmware updates.

i have the king kong 2 and my friend got the ultimate, and told me to try it, and we both had the same complain, the face buttons are to loose and mushy, besides that everything was great but the king kong gives the feeling of more of a premium controller, the only thing missing is de dock and back buttons.

I was torn, the KingKong Pro 2 seems like the perfect controller and not only has hall effect analogs but also triggers (not many reviewers mention this). The chrome paint isn't the best on the triggers and I've seen them worn and gross looking. The 8bitdo uses pressure pads in the triggers, but also has rear buttons and the dock. The software is pretty cool and does more also. I decided to go with the 8bitdo because it seems like more of a premium. I just hope the pressure pads on the triggers don't wear out.

@@dmaskell92 they definitely have problem with quality control in not just that analog cap material, like the silver paint on Gulikit one it wears out and ugly but not a big deal, but also the shoulder buttons that mine became loosely too. So I hope they improved on this one, but I tested the one with hall sensor there (stores/resellers in my country have them, because we're very very close to China, and both Gulikit and 8bitdo their prices are less than $50 instead of $70), and I can tell they're still using the same material on that analog so I didn't buy it.

@@BadEnd98 Nobody cares about the rubber on the analog, that's not what causes drift. The 8bitdo Ultimate 2.4ghz version doesn't have hall effect analogs and has a reduced price of about $50. The main cause is that every controller on the markets uses graphite potentiometers for the analog. The 8bitdo ultimate BT version uses magnetic sensors that can't drift. They use the same technology Dreamcast used 20 years ago. I still own a Dreamcast with perfectly working controllers and they will never drift.

I got the 8bitdo ultimate, and ngl, not the biggest fan. Overall, it's a fine controller except, for me, the one part that I just couldn't get past: the feel in my hands. First, not the biggest fan of the xbox style controller. I grew up mostly using playstation and gamecube controllers so I really like my grips being more out from the controller where I can wrap my hands around them instead of being closer to the back of the controller. I also really don't like grippy textures. I kinda got used to it until I picked up my sn30 pro+ again, and now I don't want to go back. Plus I found that the grippy texture on the white controller really picked up every tiny piece of whatever from my hands so it would get kinda dirty pretty quick. I found that, when I was first using the controller, the joysticks felt a little loose for my taste. All of this, for the most part, were things that I just kinda got used to. It's still a good controller, and having a dock is very nice. But, like, I'm back at my parents house for easter, and I grabbed my sn30 pro+ instead of my ultimate.

Truly the only reason I got this controller is too replace my broken PowerA controller but seems to it struggles in that regard. The analog triggers make jumping hard if you use triggers to jump. Gulikit still has some latency issues in Smash. 8bitdo seems fine. Gulikit feels better in Rise. Sticks feel nicer and the anti friction feels really nice. 8bitdo feels more comfortable in hand for Smash, feels like a ProC. Gulikit buttons feel a little less nice. I don't mind 8bitdo Vibration. @CrimsonStrider
@CrimsonStrider Жыл бұрын
@@007alztruli It depends on how you play. If you're very casual, and don't use ZL to jump, it should be fine. And it's fine for other games. If you're more serious about Smash and use ZL to short hop, this controller may frustrate you. Especially if you're trying to avoid Snapback. I'm in the process of waiting for a GC adapter to try my old GC controller and confirm the dash and Smash attack issue I mentioned. I'm also contemplating buying another pro controller and learning to mod it. Or I'll try to mod my GC controller, but I might prefer the digital ZL button of a pro controller since analog doesn't work on Switch. As mentioned, I have an incredible amount of inconsistencies with Smash attacks and Dashing. Specifically Smash attacks. With ZL (and ZR) is on a hinge and its analog. There's a slight deadzone. I have a light finger and I cannot consistently short hop. I either don't jump and get punished for stupid stuff that should be an aerial, or I full hop. Because of the hinge, I think finger placement also changes how a light touch is read. With the ultimate software, you can adjust the trigger sensor. However, with switch, you can only adjust the beginning distance. You can make it so that it requires a deeper press to activate the button. This helps make short hopping more consistent, but it makes it much easier to miss a jump completely if you have a lighter touch. If you could change the range where the button deactivates, this controller would be really cool and you could have a short hop button. But I think you can only do that on PC.

For me being able to drop the controller on the dock and forget about it is just very convenient, I don't ever want to deal with wired stuff if I don't have to and that sometimes I forget to charge my controller, this is very elegant solution that I think both 8BitDo and also Playstation 5 nailed with their design. Also I use back buttons a lot on Steam games and Remaping buttons for smash attacks on Switch! So 8BitDo made way more sense for me to buy, Plus the Dpad on 8bitdo's are WAYYY better than gulikit since they been around way longer and know how to make amazing SNES-feel dpads. Slight Edit: Since 8bitDo ALSO has Analogue Triggers with long presses, it's ideal for Arcade Racers like Forza Horizon, I feel like Gulikit was made for FPS cuz of shorter hair triggers. Update: I got the controller now and it's amazing, the only complaint I have is that it's good for medium and small hands but not if you have big hands like me..
