I've had my hands on the PlayStation Portal for a few weeks now, and as much as I do enjoy using it there's still one big problem it encounters: With so many ways to remote play, including even just using your Android of iPhone, why buy a dedicated remote play device in the first place? Here's some thoughts on how the experiences differ, and when the Portal might just be worth it.

The issue is that, in my extensive testing, the Portal often performed worse than the Steam Deck OLED running Chiaki. This isn’t necessarily a problem with the Portal itself, but rather with the state of its software. Sony appears to significantly limit the bitrate and doesn’t effectively utilize hardware-accelerated decoding. With the OLED Deck, you not only get the true qualities of an OLED display, but also HDR support soon, as the Chiaki developers are currently working on this. Granted, one is an accessory and the other a fully-fledged handheld, but it’s important to remember that there are many alternatives out there, often objectively superior to Sony’s overpriced single-purpose device.

Really, i experienced the opposit. My problems with chiaki on the steamdeck oled: sleep function on the ps5 remote don‘t work every time; sometimes sound problems; sometimes the controller doesn‘t work anymore; the picture is very bad (doesn‘t make sense because it‘s a 1000 nits oled screen, but maybe the hdr don‘t work as it should); so much lags that it doesn‘t make fun to play With the ps portal i have no problems and everything looks and plays perfect. I don‘t notice any lags and the picture is so beautiful. Also you get the most comfortable handheld with the best controllers (full Dualsense support) and a very long battery life. Also it‘s quiet because there is no fan.

@@alexh7513yeah, I have heard the same to be honest - Portal being being better than Chiaki overall and unreliable, but I’ve also heard the opposite. Looks like people are having different experiences. Personally, my Portal has been great. Much better than backbone and iPhone. Much better than iPad and controller. For me it does one thing and does it better than all the other options. Also, that guy has a “deck” in his name so bias may be in question. Some People really want the Portal to fail….

OLED isn't worth it if you're forced to play at 720p instead of 1080p. Chiaki has very imprecise input mappings for analog sticks, and completely lacks the haptic feedback and adaptive trigger support that you would expect to have in PS5 games.

I had to return mine as the internet at my home wasn't really suited for the portal. I have really good DL speed but the upload speed isn't the best... if my wife is watching Netflix while I want to play my internet will drop and will start stuttering which became more of a problem... it's a surprisingly cool device while holding it but the experience while playing wasn't there for me. this will obviously vary from house to house but they should've had a direct connectivity feature like the Wii U where I could play Bayonetta 2 while my wife watched tv.

My main issue really boils down to it being "portable but not really" as it can only perform its main function with an internet connection and has no means of doing so other than with wifi. The portability of a device like this is practically limited to your home because of this, hardly fitting for traveling, and forget wanting to play in a place like a park or something where you have literally no internet access unless you hotspot your phone and run that dry instead. Tbh, I'd rather not spend an extra $200 on the already demanding price of the PS5 just to be able to play a game if someone else wants to watch TV.

What the portal does for me is that I’m actually able to play games because of it. Usually when I get home by the time shower, eat and get comfortable it’s already 2hrs later. By that time I’m already thinking that it’s too late to start playing so what ends up happening is that months later I still didn’t ever sit down to play not even for 1 minute. With the portal what happens is by the time I’m comfortable at home, what I do is I just go to bed and start playing. This been netting me 2hrs a night of game playing. I started playing bg3 finally thanks to the portal I’m already 45hrs in where as before the portal I was not able to find not even one free second to play it. Sony knocked it out of the park with this device I mean, that’s the reason why you can’t find one of these even if you like them or not.

It's still a real scumbag thing to do that even if they did do those things since it basically selling a product before it's ready and selling a product for what it CAN do not what it actually currently does, is plain old shitty.

However, there's evident disappointment among some that the PlayStation Portalable is no longer active. Personally, I'm not overly eager for its return, especially with alternatives like the Switch and Deck available. It seems like a reasonable decision for Sony to explore different directions. Backbone is the clear winner here. The screen resolution is higher at the compromise of a smaller screen and if you have a newer phone. While the controller can become uncomfortable after an hour, you most likely shouldn’t be playing more than 2 hours. Your phones battery life doesn’t drain as much as you would think. And any Bluetooth headphones work. If gaming on the backbone is preventing you from viewing notifications and other such then you probably shouldn’t be playing at that time anyways lol

The Portal is only good if you want to play ps5 games in your bed, if you want to play ps5 games on the go, use your phone. Since you can't use Bluetooth (even tough it has Bluetooth because its able to connect to their own headphones) and you can't connect to WiFi which uses some type of html interaction, aka public WiFi, its sooo bad and I cant imagine why anyone would buy this rn. Its like a WiiU tablet with a bigger range in your house....

The reason I believe they make you use link for audio is Sony is trying to be Apple in the sense they want you into their ecosystem. Buy a PS5 and then we will sell you a Portal or VR and audio accessories. PSVR would be way more successful if it allowed PC, but Sony is trying to get players locked into PS and no way out as to where MS is saying play our games on any screen you want. Not saying which is better but only saying it’s clear of the direction both are going. Walled gardens are normally not appreciated as much, unless you love Apple products, so i am surprised to see Sony not getting much pushback for doing things such as the Link and others.

I just wish it would've had SOME kind of direct connection... I've never had a great experience trying remote play. Wifi manipulation to optimize is something new to learn that will put (most) people off. I'd even prefer just a long type c cable to use reliably

Well, it definitely looks like Sony was hanging around the table from Nintendo learning to software lock any Bluetooth device from being used except for theirs, of course. My only guess is for some strange reason all of a sudden Sony is going to unlock and allow us to pair our Bluetooth devices to the portal when they finally realize they’re not selling their headphones. Sincerely, Tim Cook.

I just feel like you can use your money for other things than just a dedicated streaming device that will more than likely not be usable with the next PlayStation. Atleast with the Backbone, you can use it for emulators and other remote play services.

I think it will also support the next gen system. I don't think Sony will change too much with the next gen controller. The PS VR1 for the PS4 also works for the PS5, so why shouldn't this be the case with the ps portal.

Sony just made me buy the backbone on black Friday. The portal is not only overpriced the portal existence doesn't make any sense to me and paying an extra 100 dollar for something that isn't an actual device or portable there is no point using it how they marketed

Teh Portal selling point, afaict, is same tactility as the DualSense and a fairly large screen for a mobile player at a lower price than the SteamDeck. But there are other caveats, you need to: 1) not already have another handheld 2) only want to play PS5 games 3) have a really good connection wherever you are

Curious to know if latency/response time is good enough for online games like Call of Duty. I get a 20-30ms latency in COD and stacking more latency on top of that could mean more deaths than kills.

Best to install a LAN cable to the PS5 and not use its wifi. It worked best on PS Remote and my iPhone 15 PM (wifi6)/Backbone controller. The Portal will benefit the same since it uses older wifi5.
