Once I stopped trying to learn the exact strumming pattern for every song and just focusing on a set of patterns that have a “feel” I started progressing much faster. Good video.

Very true, but except for some super slow songs we wouldn’t normally strum a 16th note pattern. You’re totally right though, the next thing to learn about rhythm would be 16th notes

I love what you’ve done for newer players. Wonder wall is a 16th note pattern, as is What’s Up. There are 65536 strumming patter when looking at it from a 16th note perspective.

Some good information, but, as an experienced player and teacher, I have some problems with this approach. First, I’d say that an 8th note strum (1&2&3&4&) is probably more commonly played by experienced players as all down strokes. Second, what about 16th notes?

I have never really understood strumming patterns. It always trips me up as a noob. It was until I started removing those training wheels, that’s when I realised, if you can feel the groove of the song and air strum on time, you don’t need no strumming patterns. That said, the most basic pattern that I use is D DU UDU.
@u4eahere5306 ай бұрын
Hi Kevin, Good video and it clarifies a lot. BUT what about a song like "Third Rate Romance" by the Amazing Rhythm Aces? It has chucks and palm mutes ETC. Can you show us how to figure that out? Thanks!

How does this fit with a band like As I Lay Dying? Could you make a video explaining this strumming pattern to them please, I think they would love to hear it lol
@Шизлманизл8 ай бұрын
Hey! Greatly appreciate this video! Always struggled with understanding how to fit rhythm guitar on a time signature properly. Like where does everything go to make it pulsate, does this particular D play on 1 or an AND or on "+" etc etc. Even went to get some drumming lessons hoping it would help me understand it. Can you make some more videos on this topic?

Given that each of the eighth notes can be down,up, or skipped there’d be 6561 different patterns, no?
@kevinnickens3 ай бұрын
@@MrCachedout no because the down or up is pre determined. The 1 beat will always be down, the “and” of 1 will always be up, etc. so each strum can either be on or off, so to speak

For “counting” rather than “down up”, are you omitting numbers that di not correspond to a strum? So “down down up, up down up” becomes “one two and, and four and”? Every time I hear counting espoused, in their examples they still speak the numbers even when they don’t correspond with a strum. Some even pronounce the “and” every time, making the counting useful for keeping the beat but useless for communicating the strumming pattern.
@ramonacosta264725 күн бұрын
Yes, the 1 2 3 4 correspond to the hand moving down. Each of the ands correspond to the hand moving up. This is done whether you hit the strings or not. So the hand motion is always DUDUDUDU, but you don't necessarily hit the strings with each motion. The sneaky hidden purpose of this is to keep time. When I was first learning the obvious way to strum was simply to move my hand just when I was going to hit the strings, but the result was that my timing sucked.
@ThatTokiDude8 ай бұрын
Wouldn't it be 255 permutations... unless you want to count not playing anything as a strumming pattern XD
@kevinnickens8 ай бұрын
Haha I guess you’re right!
@ramonacosta264725 күн бұрын
Not playing anything at all but still doing the DUDUDUDU pattern will keep the beat.
@Yaxqb8 ай бұрын
Nit: there are not 256 patterns ”between” D D D D and DUDUDUDU. It would be if you counted from silent strumming to full up-down strumming.😉
