man I felt the same sensation as I visited Colombia past year.. I was in Cali for Petronio Alvarez Festival.. it was massive.. I have been studying as a circus performer and then I took a gap year backpacking and now I am studying singing and afrocolombian percussion. It was a life changing experience for me..

Una bonita manera de describir lo que sintió al llegar a Colombia.
the music is great, the interview too much whitesplaining. you can also ask questions to the others and wait for translation.

Great show, but there was too much of a White man educating the aborigines thing going on. It is sad that any discussion on non-English, folklore music has to resort to those common places. Also, Richard cannot be a gringo as he is British. Also, let's talk about Colombia, but you Colombians in the room do not utter a word.
@defe147 жыл бұрын
indeed, if the white guy was not there.. It would be 90% the same..(good music also), he just made the ambience, the only way to be in KEXP

Apolino I love sidestepper but I kinda agree with you. I also think it's not Richard's fault but the show's format. I recommend you look for music from Palenke Soultribe, Ghetto Khumbe, Cero39, ChocQuibTown, Freaky Colectivo, Ondatrópica, Combo Chimbita and Pernett.

in colombia we call gringo pretty much any white blue eyed person. so if you come from england and look like that a lot of people will call you gringo. He is the one talking because he is the one that speaks english, and the show is for an american radio station so thats probably why the colombians don't speak. but as a colombian i felt he represented us well. I don't really see where the white man educating the aborigines thing happened. In my opinion what he said was quite the contrary, he was saying how moving to colombia and working with people like chongo or toto la momposina (great folklore musicians) made him se a new way of life that wasn't really there in england, and how this shows in his music. if anything i saw the interview as richard being a spokes person for what you call the aboriginals. so if anything i think his music and what hi is saying is an effort to re educate what you call white man into different ways to make music and live that have existed in indigenous communities for centuries.
