Somersault is a break from the youthful haze of their previous records. The lack of energetic drumming combined with more laidback, spaced out melodies mark their intent to retreat from the punk driven era of their lives. The variety of soundscapes found in this record reach for a more mature, meditative phase in their music: Beach Fossils as a band name is a reminiscence of a more nostalgic, carefree attitude, and those who have been following them since their first album should know that this band is a hallmark of the diffuse art that indie music is. Beach Fossils have influenced a plethora of different bands by establishing a solid teenage spirit in the ever-changing scene of indie music - Somersault, I believe, is a rebellious reaction to that teenage spirit they have laid out. I’m loving it so far, but I’d love to see them kicking back with another disobedient, juvenile sonic stamp - and I think that’s exactly what the current indie scene needs.
