For Accords 98-2002: For anyone that wants to know why this happens here is your explanation: Inside the metal tube of the gear selector is a long plastic stick that presses down on a switch at the base under the PRND plate when the gear selector is in any gear other than P. Once you move it to P the plastic stick pops back up and disengages the key lock. If the plastic stick is not greased or the grease has dried/gummed up the stick won’t release and shaking the handle CAN help it release. If shaking the handle doesn’t help you can remove the 2 Phillips head screws on the sides of the shift handle and slowly lift it off. SLOWLY or the springs and parts will fly everywhere. Then you can grease the stick. You’ll need a LONG q-tip (about 6+ inches) to get the grease down to the base. Or you can remove the PRND plate and grease it from there. But if you are stuck somewhere, you can remove the shift handle and push on the plastic stick while in park until the key comes out. You can still use the gear selector with no shift handle but get it greased and fixed as soon as you can. Hope this helps. Cheers!

Man you just saved me a ton of time and unnecessary labor. I would've ended up tearing my entire column apart and been no closer to fixing my problem. This video showed exactly what the issue was, that little lifter was preventing me from getting my key out. In my case I had bought an aftermarket shifter knob and had it installed too low on the shifter, preventing that mechanism from engaging. Thanks for such an informative video bro. It saved me.

I am having a very similar problem but I suspect that mine has to do with debris from a broken button that got stuck into the gear shifter tube (because the button broke suddenly and was in shattered pieces) and this is somehow blocking it. I already tried using lithium grease and to pull the gear shift slightly forward and the key lock still will not disengage. I don’t know how I can solve this unless I have to dismantle it further.

Found the problem it was a Maryjane stem from the people who owned the car when I bout it earlier this year. It was stuck between the park position and the plastic piece and shift rod with the plunger in it. 🤯 Imagine that

I did this and I put WD40 in the spots you said to put lithium Greece but I still have to manually flip the switch to get my key out I cleaned the piece that put it in gear and it still won’t do it by itself

Hey bro' thanks for posting this video. Unfortunately after removing my 'Center Console' from my 1999 Honda Accord LX I found that the switch was actually being engaged. From what I can gather in your video the problem may be with my 'Key Tumbler' or 'Ignition Switch'. The problem is that you have to have a Honda key if you don't have a Honda key that's going to constantly happen to you I'm going through a right now I Googled it they said the reason why the keys get stuck it because it has to have a Honda key

Simply not true. My key was stuck and wouldn't turn back to the number 1 position and this video just saved me a ton of time and unnecessary work. It worked for me and I have the factory honda key to my model.
