This was a very short video by your standards. I don't mind that they are long its like watching a documentary with information that anyone might use repairing anything. The part that I enjoy the most is when you are diagnosing the problem. It's like reading a very exciting novel because neither you or I know exactly where your poking around is going to wind up. And the mere mention of your thoughts on the matter just makes the plot THICKEN. Very entertaining, thanks for putting these vids up.

Thanks, very good demonstration. Saves a lot of time seeing it done. The nut removal tool was something I would not have thought of. Saving a considerable amount of time by not drilling out the bolt. I worked at a Nissan dealer in 1982. I was only there about a month and encounterd one of these break off bolts. Usual dealer mechanic games took place. one off the wise guys, when I asked him how to get the stupid bolt out, said, Oh just cut it off with a chisel, but it takes a lot of effort. While he hid and sat back and laughed. After beating on it for a short time, I realized I would destroy the column. I sat back and looked at it and was abel on that car to cut a grove in the head with a hack saw. Very time consuming,but it came out. Latter a decent mechanic told me to just drill it and use an easy out. Your method much better. Keep going.
@bradt93502 жыл бұрын
Just walk it out with a chisel counterclockwise. Once you break it loose.. easy peasy!!!!

Good videography for such an awkward spot to work. Very good explanation of the procedure. I long for the old cars with a simple keyed switch. But then we didn't have as many thieves. I also remember when the only wire in the column was the ground to the horn button. Then came directional lights.

+daveS ministry + I am old. My first vehicle was a 1951 GMC window van. That had vacuum wipers as did my second vehicle, a 1952 chevy 2 door sedan. With the wipers on, every time you pressed down further on the gas pedal the wipers would slow up. On a steep hill they barely moved.

I would give this a hundred thumbs-ups if I could. A word to those contemplating trying to remove the assembly without dropping the steering column: don't. I tried that and ended up having to drop the column anyway to finish the job after expending much needless effort and inventing new cuss words. I would have been much better off doing so to begin with. Don't let all the unhooking scare you, it goes back together more easily that you would imagine, and the column is very easy to lift and align. Also, the Honda connectors separate much more easily than is typical for automotive connectors. Go for it!

i used this video as a guide and i must ty.. but when it came to remove that pain in the rear bolt.. i used a #8 1.25 coupling nut and a new bolt to wrench it out.. 1 minute is all it took
@theeabster19835 жыл бұрын
I changed one of these today in a 01 Honda CRV. I got lucky I didn't have to take the steering wheel down once you get that break off bolt out I was able to reach behind the column with a pick and push the button down and just pushed it right out and put the new one in.

Thanks Eric for the help, You da Man!This job could be a lot easier with a little more thinking on Honda's part. How about an easy way to replace the key tumbler like on most domestic cars? Next, how about not using a sheer bolt...what a bunch of BS, like somebody looking to hot wire a car is going to take the dash apart and replace the ignition lock...lol.Not that bad of a job though, after watching a pro like you.Thanks again and have a nice Holiday!

Great video! My little trick I do to remove the sheer bolts, is to use an automatic center punch, start with a couple clicks to get a dent going then gradually pivot the punch to the direction of rotation while clicking. Works everytime for me, it's fast, fits in tight spots, and on some makes/models can shortcut having to drop column.
@SouthMainAuto10 жыл бұрын
Oh ok that makes sense. I'll give that a try next time. Always can bust out the long barrel hair hammer with pointed bit right!?Haha.

OneLegged hondamechanic Greetings Mr. Honda Mechanic, wrt removing the sheer bolt - Is that with the column off the car or laid down like Eric had it? Would seem to be a long drawn out task compared to using a twist off impact socket.
@OneLegged-honda-mechanic9 жыл бұрын
It's fast and easy, best of all you won't have to drop the column down. In fact that is why I like using auto punch. You'll be surprised at how well it works
@hawaiianf15049 жыл бұрын
+OneLegged hondamechanic Ya know, the more i think on this method the more it sorta confuses me. Reckon i'm just thick headed and slower than a union mudslide worker or something. If the shear bolt was tightened to the point that the head breaks off how, is the auto center punch gonna move it? Gotta be at least 15-25 Ft/Lbs of torque to break the head off. Most cases I know me and i'd run outta patience trying. Reckon i gotta figure this one out. Cold Beer anyone? - Perplexed in Hawaii.

Thanks for this! Just swapped out an ignition lock switch because someone decided to use a screw driver to go on a joy ride. Used a dremel to cut the bolt out instead of trying to back it out. I had something similar on our '04 honda pilot. Key would slide in and out but wouldn't turn in the cylinder. But other than that it worked like a charm.

What a great DIY. Thank you. ONLY comment I have is you do NOT need to fuss around with the securing bolt trying to find the right sized twist socket to hammer it in. Are you a contortionist? LOL. Just get a dremmel and cut that sucker off right down the middle as the new kit comes with a replacement securing bolt. The threaded side of the bolt easily unthreads by hand.

Super secret hint on Honda's ignition cylinders (esp 90's Accords): Open the drivers door and the flat plastic side of the dash will be exposed. Smack that hard with the flat of your hand, and it will release the pawl in the cylinder often times, on steering column mounted ignition cylinders. (Then order the new part, or dismantle and lubricate!)

Somehow missed this video earlier...So do you end up having to carry around two separate keys after this procedure? @SouthMainAuto9 жыл бұрын
motoYam82 yeah ypu are stuck with 2 keys using this aftermarket one and as far as I know this is the only way to get the interlock solenoid. Not sure if I got this from Honda if they could have coded it to the key or if you could transfer tumblers from old lock or not. Good question.

Man, that's rough placement for a shear head bolt. I'm usually lucky enough to get them to where they're on top and they're accessible-- and I go at em with a punch and hammer (or autohammer)... though I'll have to try those twist sockets. Why not switch out the ignition cylinder back with the stock one so your customer has a one key system like OEM?

What is the reason for the shear bolt in this assembly? Just to make it difficult for a car thief to remove the lock assembly? Just the time needed to get at the thing would be longer than a thief would want to hang around working, I would think. The only other place I have seen shear bolts used is in applications where installation torque is critical, but the fasteners will be installed without a torque wrench for ease of assembly. But mounting an ignition switch doesn't seem like one of those situations...

Your assumptoin that getting the plastic off is trivial, is incorrect. That is the *hardest* part ! Once the plastic is off it is openly obvious to see how to unhook the wiring, and remove the bolts.
