Good job! My guess is that the original coil failed (internal short) and blew the FET and/or damper diode in the PCM. It is sad how many of these things fail that can easily be fixed on a electronics bench. But customers want it fixed NOW! If it was mine, I certainly would take it apart and fix it myself.

That Pulsar tool is neat. I have a short circuit tester that you put in a circuit breaker in the place of the blown fuse. Then you use this needle gauge against the suspect wire to see which way the needle bounces (left or right). That tells you which direction the short is in the wire. Of course it only works if you can access the wire easily which isn't always the case. It works though, a very handy tool. Good video, I've thought about getting a tool like the Pulsar or maybe the "power probe", anything that will assist with electrical diagnosis.
@frugalprepper5 жыл бұрын
Very Nice. That Pulsar is a nice tool. For now I just have my clamp meter and homemade fused wire loop and a bucket of fuses. I've been trying to talk myself into one of those circuit breaker fuses but I haven't done it yet. I don't get to do as much troubleshooting as I'd like and video like this are super helpful learning experiences.
@jamesd24825 жыл бұрын
Was thinking the same thing about a circuit breaker since I'm not a mech any fancy tools outside of a scope and amp clamp wouldn't be worth my needs. Not sure even that would be necessary since it was blowing the fuse we knew current was high and a short to ground was suspect. I wonder if the coil had anything to do with it frying though and would be hesitant to slap a new computer in without checking everything on that circuit. As a dyi person my main goal is to save money and not use spendy tools if I can.

A smart ignition IGBT pre-driver IC (or monitor circuit) for ignition will have full diagnostics on the driver itself. So, if the driver is not being commanded on by the pre-driver, but the output is on (being pulled low) then the PCM should be able to report status (PID) or fault (DTC) on this circuit. This is helpful if you want repair the module yourself (replace a shorted IGBT) or if you want to send the module out for repair. Also, we are assuming that there is not issue with the connector pins, either corrosion or a bent pin on the module side. If you look at the battery for this vehicle, if not original, many times it will look small compared to the room available on the battery tray. This is because the original battery was actually a special sub-category of the group size (special meaning high output) which is no longer available. The closest battery to the original available is actually one made for a BMW. I know for a fact that the battery replacement listing for AAA in their look-up roadside cross reference is the wrong battery. With the vehicle stand time less than two weeks and expected life or about 4 months.

11:15 - that image of Keith should be in a professionally produced intro to any Staten Island Express videos! That is friggin priceless right there! Have Ivan say, "Why is the ignition coil drawing 14 amps?" then, cut to Keith at 11:15. Video GOLD! 😎👍👍 I did a timing belt on a PT Cruiser once ... outside, in February, right in my driveway. I still suffer from PTSD from that. Did I mention I HATE PT Cruisers? 😁 I've never cursed Chrysler so much on one job in my life. I was ready to set fire to that toilet! The best day of my life was a year later, when I hauled that turd to the scrap yard where it belonged from day 1, after the engine went Chernobyl - overflow tank was FULL, so the owner said to me, "It's full to the top!" He tried to drive it here 20 miles. He made it 18, at least - towed it the final 2. The head gasket turned to vapor.🤣 That was the best thing that could have happened - he got another vehicle, and hasn't broke down yet!!😁

I followed what you did. I think the grounding in the pcm can pass 6 amps but not all circuits can do this? In the old days the device was always grounded to the frame and the on switch was before the load. Today, since there is voltage drop through the load, the Pcm can more easily handle the reduced current.
@Monkeh6165 жыл бұрын
They do low side switching because NMOS FETs are cheap and easy to drive. Current does not change by moving the switching point.

Would it be worth it to check and see how if coils are operating normally before calling it a fix? I remember an old case study on the South Main channel where a Caravan's misbehaving coil killed the PCM and probably wasn't far off from damaging the good PCM Eric O. put in it. These cases are probably mostly unrelated outside of correlating Chrysler product of this vintage + ignition-related problem + damaged PCM, but it does make you think. Well done under pressure.
@rhkips5 жыл бұрын
So, it's been a while, and I'd love someone to jump in and correct me if I'm wrong... Weren't there two coilpack designs on the Chrysler 4s of that era, and weren't they wired differently? I feel like I've seen this before, replace the coil, wrong connector, get new connector, power and control are swapped, takes out PCM driver?

Initial guess; plugged fuel tank fuel pump screen/filters. I'm thinking the fuel rail pressure sensor says that the pressure is low. PCM powers up the tank fuel pump but the fuel filter is plugged. The same sequence loops until the fuse blows.
There is one other possibility. It could be that there is another pin directly connected to this ignition driver output, for example for the rev counter. In that case a short on that wire would show up as an internal short in the ECU.
@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics5 жыл бұрын
Interesting thought. On these newer vehicles (no distributor), the rpms are usually derived directly from the crank sensor, so the ignition driver circuit is independent of everything else :)
