Surprisingly, Gary Kordan, the production designer, said they only had about $8500 to build the set (about $6500 to build the structures and things and $2000 for the set dressing). What's even more crazy is that the budget for a Key & Peele sketch was typically about $1500. In one day, his team of 13 people were responsible for renting all of the equipment and props and setting up sets for two different sketches, and making them look as fantastic as this.

Key and Peele can honestly pull off any accent, race, ethnicity, anything. They honestly surprise me with every sketch. They are so talented, I can't believe it. And they're so intelligent as well!! You can see it in their deep psychology of the human mind and their small references to bigger pictures and even classic movies and literature. Tal well, Tal, they don't say it out loud, but you can understand just from their looks that they are not really feminist pirates, but are just terrorized into singing feminist songs. At the start you're led to belive they sing feminist song, and the joke is that pirates are usually very gross and talk dirty. But then, brilliantly, they flip that entirely, and you understand, which only some looks, that it's all because this woman is scaring the sexism out of them.

Interestingly enough many pirate crews had a lot more respect for women than you'd have given them credit for. Often pirate ships were ran with strict rules, for example, in Captain Bartholomew Robert's ship, The Fortune, there was no gambling, no smuggling girls into the dorm, no playing music on a Sunday and lights out at eight O'clock sharp in the evening. What's more: when it came to women aboard, the articles of Captain George Lowther, a famous pirate of his day, said "if at any time you meet with a prudent woman, that man that offers to meddle with her, without her consent, shall suffer present death." Nowadays pirates are just popularised to act and speak a certain way since that's how we think of them in books and films, but they were in fact quite the gentlemen a lot of them!
