Shit man, you right. I'm so hard-pressed to even single songs out tho. Like imo every periphery release has a few tracks that are THAT good, if not most of the album. This is one of the songs from P2 for me. Honestly tho I love P2 start to finish so, so insanely stupidly hard. It could be a touch of nostalgia as that album was such a giant part of my life at like 19-20, but I really think these songs are that damn good. 3 might actually be my favorite period as far as song writing goes, but I mean shit. Everything they've put out is special and outstanding imo. I still spin the icarus ep all the time.

Matt never gets enough praise. He contributes SO much to the overall sound. Listen closely to him during the the first breakdown section. ABSOLUTELY BONKERS? Pulsing the rhythm with 8th notes on the hats with his left foot, quarter notes with the right hand mixed with some intricate accents, nasty ghost notes on the snare accompanied by his sledgehammer hits, and just DRIVING the guitars with the kick. Incredible.

For a more recent pairing, go with “Sentient Glow” for an idea of how they’ve built on this style, or “Reptile” or “Satellites” to hear how much they’ve grown and expanded their sound in the time since. Each member of periphery is astonishingly talented and with diverse and unique influences and composition style, and they do a phenomenal job of showcasing each of their individual styles and talents throughout different songs & sections. The more you feel around, the more you’ll start to feel as if you know each individual band member based on their style, it’s quite surreal.

I honestly didn't like it the first time I listened to the album because it was so different, but after giving it another shot I have realized how incredible that album is and what they were going for. It's the most different album from normal PTH stuff but it'd outstanding in a whole new way. I can't stop listening to it now and it has probably become my fav album of theirs. From a composers point of view that is THE album to listen to. Some really incredible composition and production on their end. Also took the longest to make for them I believe out of all of their albums.

I've never found myself so driven to comment as I have with your videos. Excellent Channel. Periphery is like diving into the deep end, and Make Total Destroy in particular, is a kick-in-the-teeth introduction to them. Some music is difficult to capture with one track, Periphery much like Tool, is just that. The Periphery track I recommend is Garden in the Bones. A much newer track, you can hear the band's song writing maturity. As you listen to more Periphery you will recognize the jazz influences, the insane skill level of the musicians, and the sheer complexity more and more. Not digestible for all, but for those of us that enjoy complex music, they are fantastic. Finally, I know others have spoken, and I have commented briefly on a previous video - you will enjoy Opeth. I may not yet have your musical experience, but after ~25 years of enjoying heavy music, Opeth remains my favourite. So I'm going to go on an Opeth rant, and get it out of my system ;) There is a vast catalogue to explore, but maybe I can narrow down a piece of it, and I expect others will chime in. With any Luck we can guide without giving too much away. Orchid, Morningrise, My Arms, Your Hearse - These 3 albums have a similar feel and tone. Close to a Black Metal sound at times, you get to experience the diversity and song-writing skills. I don't recommend starting here, but enjoying these a little later. Still Life - a noticeable change in tone from previous albums. High level of complexity and diversity. Blackwater Park - regarded by many as The Pinnacle. I recommend The Drapery Falls or Blackwater Park as tracks of choice. Deliverance/ Damnation - The Dark and the Light. These two albums show the 2 extreme sides of Opeth. I recommend tracks Deliverance (Heavy) and Windowpane (Soft). Ghost Reveries - For me, this is the one. My Opeth album of choice. Recommend tracks Ghost of Perdition or Reverie/Harlequin Forest. I believe this is where you should begin your Opeth journey. Watershed - Band Member Changes. Music Style changes begin. Heritage/ Pale Communion/ Sorceress - Further music style changes. Incorporates more Prog sound & Clean vocals. In Cauda Venenum - Recorded initially in Swedish. I would wait to explore this album until you've spent time with others first. Finally, the live versions from Lamentations, The Roundhouse Tapes, Live at Royal Albert Hall & Red Rocks are all very good and don't hesitate to choose one of these in place of a Studio Version. Ok, I didn't expect to write an essay, but there you have it. I've never met another Opeth lover who agrees on the same top tracks, so we know wherever you begin, we will appreciate you making the trip. Whoever you decide to react to next, I'll be watching. Keep up the great work. - Steve

Just discovered your reactions, big fan of the selections as well as the analysis. Such a rabbit hole to go down with Periphery. Gonna put my votes in for Reptile, Stranger Things, Satellites (Satellites is a great song and also probably Spencer's best vocal performance). If you want something shorter/punchier, maybe Prayer Position. A few other band recommendations - -Vektor (proggy technical thrash/extreme metal) (Recharging the Void is their most epic for sure, I think the most popular might be Tetrastructural Minds) -Alkaloid (proggy mix of different extreme metal styles) (If you have 20 minutes, "Rise of the Cephalopods" is UNBELIEVABLE. Honestly if you got a Patreon I'd consider joining that just to see you react to that song, bc there are no reactions to it on youtube. Other great choices are Orgonism, Funeral for a Continent, and Carbon Phrases) -Beyond Creation (prog/tech death metal) (Omnipresent Perception is their most popular I think, but Earthborn Evolution or Algorythm are my picks) Those are all heavier than what you've typically reacted to, but you've done some very heavy stuff so it seems like you're not diametrically opposed -Animals as Leaders (virtuosic instrumental jazzy djent; some of it may be a little too showy for what you seem to prefer). -TesseracT (prog djent with mostly clean vocals). (Probably a very popular request, and although it's down my comment, they might be the one that most fits with what you've been reacting to. The live-in-studio version of "of Matter" is their most popular reaction, and the live version of "Hexes" is another popular one. Tough to go wrong with those choices. Dystopia is a pretty popular one as well.) -More Between the Buried and Me would be cool - Extremophile Elite is probably the most requested reaction from them for good reason. Other good choices are Memory Palace or Silent Flight Parliament. SFP is similar to what I said about Rise of the Cephalopods for Alkaloid - it's long so no one reacts to it but A) it's insane and B) I'd consider supporting a Patreon to see it. Their Colors album is a bit more spastic than later albums for me, but still has awesome tracks to react to like White Walls, Sun of Nothing, or Ants of the Sky. Hopefully that gives you enough to chew on. PS was glad to see you do Plini - Papelillo. Crazy track, insane guitar player. Such a talent. He's toured with Animals as Leaders a few times.

Their bassist records/engineers all their music. If you watch their behind the scenes videos, he takes it very seriously and that's why the production is so good. Also, one of their 3 guitarists is nephew to John Petrucci of Dream Theater. Petrucci even plays a guest solo on the Periphery song "Erised".

OHHH It took me 3 de-composer jokes to figure out that the joke is that you're old, not that you're breaking down the music LOL. Love seeing someone discovering some of my favorite music and looking at it critically from a professional point of view and not just as a listener. Great work :)

We are talking about a band whose each of its members are endorsed by instruments brands and have their own signature serie, This is the kind of band that needs at least 15 songs reactions, then what anybody thinks must be the ideal song to react to is matter of taste.

I really liked the people's elbow description of how this hits you as that's how I felt 10 years ago now, as a bored college student, when not only Periphery, but so many other bands kinda steamrolled in with gas tanks filled with progressive metal and djent and their exhausts fuming speed... it was something else. As close as we have been to a music revolution since...

Its exciting that you are taking a look at Periphery. I think something off of one of their last 3 albums would probably be a better representation. At this point they were still trying to figure out their writing process, and really nailing down what Periphery should sound like.

Periphery has only gotten better and better over the years. Their latest album "Hail Stan" is just a masterpiece. They transitioned away from some of the crazier syncopation but still remain to show it off occasionally. The vocalist, Spencer, is just one of the best in the business imo. He pushes everything to the limit on many different levels.
@immaculatetoilet

I'm glad he finally steered away from that New Found Glory-ish vocal delivery he's done in the past. They are all the better for it. HAIL STAN is so much more cohesive because of that decision.

Periphery!!!! One of my fav bands for sure. New album is FANTASTIC with reptile being the ~17 minute banger. Periphery along with meshuggah are the "founders" of djent arguably. Spencers vocals are outstanding throughout all their albums. Give them all a listen in your free time.

Seeing some more Between the Buried and Me recommendations filter up through the comments... yes, check them out! I think the track "Astral Body" will fit your vibe - it's heavy, but joyous. I'll go out on a limb and recommend "Rapid Calm" and "Turn on the Dark" as well. Not the most popular tracks in the BTBAM fanbase, but really interesting composition and probably more accessible for an audience not accustomed to metal. While I'me here' I'll drop a recommendation for The Dear Hunter as well. Very proggy, compositionally interesting, genre-bending music: rarely overtly heavy & with a huge range of influences of which folk comes to the forefront. Recommended tracks would be "In Cauda Venenum" and "A Night on the Town".

The engineering for Periphery is definitely excellent. Anything Misha Mansoor and Adam "Nolly" Getgood touches is f'ing gold! Nolly dials in some of the best drum tones ever. You can hear a significant improvement in the drum tone on Devin Townsend's album "Transcendence" (compared to the previous album Epicloud). That's what Nolly does. And Misha is just a beast. You should check out his KZbin videos where he's composing and recording songs using GGD drums. He occasionally drops these little nuggets of wisdom and tips that are helpful if you're a home studio person working on your own music.
