Kalmah!! the perpetually underrated kings of melodic death metal. pleease listen to some of their older stuff! It needs way more attention. Hades, The Blind Leader, Swamphell, They will return, heroes to us, the black waltz i could go on but they have so many iconic riffs/songs/solos. i cant help but feel their earlier material was a lot heavier and more gritty

@sinkler1233 жыл бұрын
Your explanation about growling really hit the nail on the head in my case. That is exactly why I feel songs where the vocalist growl the ENTIRE song are kinda boring, due to the perma "drone" effect. I can enjoy growling as a tool to be used along with others to create variations in a vocal performance. But when singers overuse it its hard for me to enjoy. There is a reason no singer will belt or use head-voice for the entire song duration (and these techniques allow the use of notes and melody!). It gets boring... Same logic should apply to growling IMHO.

If anyone's looking for some more out there metal, here's a few suggestions. 1: "Purgatorium" by Sigh. Japanese experimental black metal. Neoclassical influence in this track and a whole lot of wild energy. 2: "Wedding March for a Bullet" by Diablo Swing Orchestra. Avant-garde genre mashing metal with swing revival and opera influence, among others. Their whole discography is great, and it's hard to predict what you're in for with any given song. 3: "Gravedigger's Chant" by Zeal and Ardor. Combination of black metal and black spirituals. Both Z&A's albums are superb, and they definitely made waves. 4: "Waltz in E-major, Op. 15 "Moon Waltz"" by Cojum Dip. Sort of... jazz math metal with... circus influence? It's fun, silly, and, very odd while also going hard when it needs to. 5: "Wisdom Eyes" by Nine Treasures. Do you like The HU? Then you'll like Nine Treasures. Mongolian folk metal. 6: "Psamatäe" by Rïcïnn. Iffy whether this is metal, or any distinct genre at all, but it has the right feel and I'm the one making this list. Think Kate Bush plus Igorrr - she has, in fact, performed in several Igorrr tracks. 7: "POP3" by MASTER BOOT RECORD. Electronic metal done right. Shades of Doom soundtrack, or what might happen if the ghosts of a 90s heavy metal band posessed a floppy drive. 8: "1289, voyeur will shine, fight for distinction, evolution is mine." by Amogh Symphony. Avant-garde metal with Indian folk music, jazz, electronic, and a complete disinterest in consistency. If you like free jazz, this may be for you.

Hypocrisy's "Fire in the Sky" (uploaded by daeva) is a video eagerly waiting for you. The vocals go from deep growling to high-pitched shrieks in a second by the same guy, something you might be looking for. And let me add: he has multiple projects, besides being the "singe" he can play the bass, guitar, drums, he is a sound engineer and was the producer for multiple major releases... so he knows what he is doing. (And after seeing him live, I can safely say that his vocals are even better live) There is also the "PleasureOsculumPenetralia Medley", which is great as well, though quite different. Okay, I have to admit he does this quite often and effortlessly. But to be fair, there are many other bands and singers that pull off similar stuff. Cradle of Filth comes to mind as one of them. As it is almost 4 am, I give up thinking about other ones... and just thinking in general. Oh, and if you are looking for more Kalmah: Heroes to Us, the Groan of the Wind... and too many others to list
