No it wasn't. Their process to writing and recording this album was different than previous and more organic. On earlier albums, all the parts were written for each instrument then recorded and pieced together. This album had more input from all members and they came together and fleshed it all out together. They weren't performed live.

I've heard people say early 'Shuggah was "too Metallica ish" or some crap. Listening to Contradictions Collapse, you can hear the influence but Meshuggah was SOOO much better than Metallica, and not at all "copying" or whatever. I think it was just the superficial tones that sounded similar aside from the obvious influence Metallica played on pretty much ALL metal ever to come after them.

@@mattiasjansson733 While it's not surprising that Meshuggah's impressive musicianship and compositional skills would catch the ear of academics, the band themselves - none of whom had traditional musical training - took pains to demystify the perceived complexity of their music. "There is definitely more to our music than 4/4," Haake explained to the Miami New Times in 2008. "But the main thing is the 4/4 feel. For us, that's a very important aspect to it. It helps us in giving the music a certain amount of flow. You can actually - at least on a good night - get into a groove. If you want to translate it into being, 'here's this number of bars in 23/16 and this last part turns into 30 16th notes and starts over,' that's not how we perceive our music. It's just a matter of that last one flowing in an odd number over the 4/4 beat. Therefore, the 4/4 that we write and play around is the most important aspect. I usually play eighth notes on the hi-hat all the time, so everyone in the band can headbang."

Yeah, the harmonies and leads and vocals are recorded separately. But rhythm guitar, some leads, bass, and drums are all recording simultaneously in the studio. I think the guitarists are in different sound booths but the drummer and bassist are in the same room together. If you listen carefully there's a few mistakes they left in but you can't even notice since the energy is all there.

Don't want to be "that guy" but with Meshuggah you can generally headbang with the main cymbal/hi-hat hit. There are a couple exceptions like the intro to Pravus etc but even that has steady driving 8th notes on the kick to orient yourself.

glad you listened to meshuggah! most of their songs are in 4/4, but the rhythms underlying that 4 can be very, very intricate. most of the patterns resolve naturally to 4, but in some they add or subtract from the pattern to resolve. the snare is usually always 2 & 4, which means the drummer has to internalize all of the rhythms with the kick (usually) against the straight 2 & 4 - it's absolutely amazing. listeners who don't know much about polyrhythms etc. might only hear the basic 2 & 4 and think the song is straightforward. but learning the patterns underneath everything makes it insanely more complex. i love the vocals being longer phrases juxtaposed with the shorter syncopated patterns. a song i think that easily shows this concept is Do Not Look Down. you can take the intro as a basic odd time thing. but then that odd time is played under the 4/4 when the song kicks in and you'd have to learn how that pattern "morphs" around within the 4. it's amazing writing. it's a shame some people can't get over the vocals, but i think it's such an integral part of the music as a whole. as you said, powerful. i love meshuggah!

Cool! Meshuggah is one of my favorite bands. If you like this track you should definitely check out Meshuggah's 2nd and 3rd LPs, Destroy Erase Improve and Chaosphere. Their 1994 EP None is worth checking out as well. Meshuggah single-handedly opened my tastes to harsher vocals almost overnight. Their command of syncopation and groove is almost unmatched, very forward thinking band that have carved out their own niche. Devin Townsend - "We all rip off Meshuggah"

Hey ! If you liked this band, I HIGHLY advise you (and I can't stress this enough) to go give an ear to Car Bomb. It is a math core band heavily inspired by Meshuggah, in a more bizarre, innovative and disconstructed way than the later. Scattered Sprite would be my go-to if you want something really... well, I have no words, really go check them. If you want to have some fun go listen to The Sentinel, they made almost the entire song in the same pattern but with different notes and time signature, it would be surely interesting for you anyway.

xenogardien I’ll second this. Car Bomb is the next evolution of what Meshuggah started IMO, maybe hybridized with a little Dillinger and Deftones. Interestingly as many Djent bands that sprung up after Meshuggah got big, Car Bomb is the only band that gives me that “Meshuggah feeling”, no other way to describe it. It’s also even stranger just given that Car Bomb do NOT play in common time generally and Meshuggah almost always do, so structurally their music is really quite different.

The guitar tone is also similar, and thats becouse the style of meshuggah kind of founded a sub genre called Djent or some weird shit like that, wich is basically overabuse of palm mute. As an avid Meshuggah fan, I'm so happy that you immediately latched onto the percussion as the indication of where the beat is. There's so much metal out there, or metal-adjacent music, that isn't really "head-bangable", which is a huge detraction for me, but almost all of Meshuggah's music is.

One thing to note about Meshuggah is that the drummer never strays from that divining rod of tempo. In virtually every single song there's gonna be a cymbal or something in the background that you can nod your head to through the entire song.

Gonna throw out a recommendation for Deathspell Omega - a lot of dissonance and technical guitars creating some of the most unique music out there. Kenose I is a big ask, but probably covers their sound most completely. Loving the videos man!

Funny thing about Meshuggah is before you figure out what they're doing rhythmically, and the song feels like odd time, you don't feel a groove at all; then once it clicks and you figure it out, you hear the groove and it just feels massive.

Meshuggah is absolutely amazing§!!! I love all the explanations you give to us laymen and the analytical eye you bring which is why I'd recommend some avant-garde metal like Kayo Dot (Choirs of the Eye and Hubardo are masterstrokes) or Gorguts (Obscura or Coloured Sands), I think those would really really pique your interest

I remember seeing them I think in 2017. My only show ever (until they come next year. It's confirmed! Special London show they said!). I didn't know them much at all. But when I went and heard it. Omfg. I was up front too. I always feel I have to be up front, front row if possible. I love the energy. They blew me away, to say the least. I couldn't explain to myself why I loved it. I'm not even into this heavy music much. I'm slowly starting but the heaviest I heard before was Mastodon or Slipknot I guess. But this here? Wow. The grooves, the syncopation (didn't know this word before) and all while staying in 4/4 technically. It's amazing. Meshuggah have easily become one of my top 5 favorite bands ever. And the more I go back now, I love it even more. I take my time with music. I'm now with Chaosphere and Destroy Erase Improve.
