Bringing in the professional back-up is strong work. I appreciate hearing that I can start socializing my puppy early. Vet restarted her shots. She gets her 2nd in a week. Meanwhile, I bring her to my neighbors with their healthy dogs to mingle. Feels good to know I’m doing the right thing. And I want my pit bull puppy to be a sweetheart

Just got my puppy two days ago, his a 12 week old, 1.7lb Yorkie, the runt of the litter. The breeder told me the same thing, to not take him out or interact him with other dogs until his 6 months old. Told us to use PuppyPads, and a diaper to prevent him from peeing everywhere once he grows and develops the need to mark his territory. I found all of these tips a little weird and quite honestly disappointed because I was looking forward to taking my puppy out and showing him the world. I am so grateful to have found your channel. Currently what I'm struggling with is trying to get him to eat, he does not like to eat. Other than that his super playful, super energetic, super loving...

I'm not sure if you have anything like this, but a video on socialization for older dogs would be phenomenal. A lot of people like myself adopted an older dog who may have not had adequate socialization, but we still want to bump up our pup's quality of life as much as we can. As it is, there isn't much info out there, (at least as I've seen), on how to tackle this problem, so anything in the way of advice on that would help a TON of dog owners, myself included.

Hi Ian, been watching your video's and have found they make such common sense. My rescue cairn terrier died at the start of the year. I miss him so much, and am completely in love with the cairn breed. They're such busy little guys and I want to make sure my cairn pup when I get him or her in the next couple months has the best start to life in our home. My little guy was given up to the dog shelter because he "chased cows". With positive reinforcement he and I created a deep bond, he just needed someone to give him the time he needed and deserved. I've showed your videos to family members so we can be on the same page, and there is an excellent puppy/dog training place in the city I live in, whos philocophy matches well. Keep up the great work, cheers from Australia.

Am getting a 16 week old puppy, and the breeder is conscious of exposure and socialization, so I’m hoping it will go okay. I’ve never had a puppy before-my previous dog was over a year when I got him, and was a bit cautious in some ways (especially with new dogs) but we connected to each other well, and I was able to help him get better with meeting new dogs (but never really happy about it).

I took very much the same stance when my dog was little. We had her in socialization classes and pack walks multiple times a week from 9wks onwards. She went to daycare once or twice a week at 12 wks. We took her with us everywhere. She met lots of people and dogs. BUT. During a fear period from about 6m onwards, she became incredibly apprehensive of the world.... even with all the training and exposure she had til that point. Now, at eighteen months, she is better, but still cautious of strangers and over-eager dogs. She'll bark and tell people and dogs to back off. Some people it's not the case with, but not all. Makes it really challenging. I've often wondered if it is because she had TOO MUCH exposure when she was really little. We make a lot of effort now to control her environment and interactions to set her up for success. It's work, but worth it, because she's a delight. She loves the people and dogs she does know, she's just slow to warm up with those she doesn't.

Hey Ian! I love your videos it has helped us so much with training our little rescue dog :) any tips for older dog socialisation? It really doesn’t t seem like our dog had any in his past life as he is very fearful borderline agressive with people and dogs... and of course nobody wants him at an obedience or socialisation class. He is 9months old so hopefully we can still work on it. We are meeting with a trainer but I would love to hear your advice on this topic.
@SimpawticoDogTraining6 жыл бұрын
Hey Valentine! Check out our other socialization vid: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bnualIN7YpeqhNk where we talk about protected socialization. That's the strategy you're really going to focus on. Work under threshold at distance. Have great experiences in proximity to people and/or dogs and gradually decrease the distance as his confidence grows. And you're right: a class would be a terrible venue for socialization. I mean think how many times our teachers in school told us "You're not here to socialize!" Make a group class a long-term goal. In the meantime, figure out where he's at right now, and hang out with it.
@mamaluvbug9876 жыл бұрын
Simpawtico Dog Training - great advice & will def check out the vid to reference to pass on, but like OP said "no one wants in classes" which I read as & know to be locally true: trainers or whoever's in charge often refuse to provide services for dogs with an aggressive disposition *which is irony at its best & contradictory at its core!* Also aggression is very often an issue with many rescues having been abused/neglected/mistreated... (sadly, which angers me/makes me wish the same fate of the losers who treat - those helplessly dependent on them - like that!)
@saramations4 жыл бұрын
Any updates? I find it hard to believe no trainer wanted an "aggressive" 9 month old (what breed?) in their class... If so, I don't know what bs trainers would turn that down. My trainer welcomes all dogs within her class.

What should you do if you DO live in an apartment? I hope you would agree it isn’t honest advice to get an animal you may not want, like a fish or cat. Taking a stance that outdoor areas are bad AND indoor training is bad seems incomplete. On the heels of the puppy socialization topic it sound like the vets professional opinion is that dogs are solely adapted to american suburbs. While its easy to understand the medical idealism in this, it’s not practical advice. Enjoyed seeing the full interview thanks. Maybe a “pup in the city” video in the future?
@tylercat66 жыл бұрын
If you replay, you’ll hear them all say “exception apply, like apartments & nursing homes with small dogs. The difference from simply hearing & “listening “ is how carefully we take in what we hear.
@NP-sd9md6 жыл бұрын
Teri Petrillo I was responding to that it discourages pee pads in general while not providing actual advice for a common situation where they are needed before full vaccination. I stand by my comment that it’s incomplete advice. It’s a 20min unscripted interview, and I really liked it so i hope my comment wasn’t so strong that my point got lost. If it did: Ian, moar like this :) Fwiw i think the exception you quoted was referring to the extreme of long-term indoor training in a 100th story apartment. not apartments where outdoor access exists, but is unsafe for a 2 mo old puppy. And i agree comprehension is a careful activity.
@mamaluvbug9876 жыл бұрын
N P - interestingly I lived in & near HeLLmira, in fact down the Rd for many years & even next door to the Lake Rd Animal Hospital - that said, there's NO dog parks ANYWHERE in the "city" or surrounding counties! So I'm glad they expanded on & gave examples on "socializing" & vaccines, but disappointed they only touched on the latter... (side note, IDK why but having explained above feel the need to say: I paid Dr Brennan thousands, but my dog still lost his eye unless I could come up with another $3000 for surgery; which wasn't revealed to me till after a year of weekly visits)
@mamaluvbug9876 жыл бұрын
Teri Petrillo - Touche, the difference between reading & comprehension of information read is basic intelligence. *If you re-read* you'll see OP clearly understood what they said & was simply asking for an expansion of *what to DO* if u live in an apartment (note the case of both of our *DO* 's & also their mention of getting a cat or fish)... Your reply was both unhelpful & unnecessary. U "could" say the same for mine, only that wouldn't be accurate either.

I don't know if you've figured it out since posting, but the recommended housetraining method is to give the puppy a DIY toilet topped with a surface of what they'll be using when they're old enough to potty outdoors (e.g. concrete slab, patch of grass, gravel, etc.) There's a free download of Ian Dunbar's Before and After You Get Your Puppy at Simpawtico's website.

Great video and extremely informative! Just one question... Why do you not suggest dog parks? Right now with this pandemic going on finding a puppy class is hard and going to the park and keeping my distance from people is what I can do for now.
@SimpawticoDogTraining4 жыл бұрын
I personally don't recommend public dog parks. There are too many opportunities for trouble-people who don't watch their dogs, people who don't ever think their dog is the problem, unvaccinated dogs, unsocialized adult dogs, reactive dogs, aggressive dogs, mismatched play sizes and styles...we've just had a spate of trouble in several of our local parks. The only times I think it works is when it's a private park where there are barriers to entry, where attendees are screened, and it's staffed.

Hi firstly I am loving your videos. I’m just curious about something. I just got my new puppy a week ago. He is 11 weeks old and I’m worried I’ve missed his first window. I’ve spent my first week with him at home toilet and crate training. with only a vet visit (where he got lots of hugs and treats). this was due to the recommendation of the breeder. He just had his 2nd vaccination on Monday and the vet said wait a week before I take him outside. So far since I’ve had him he’s only meet with 5 people. The breeder did have him with other puppies and his parents.

I've got a new puppy. I've been trying to potty train. I've got treats he only gets when we go potty outside. Its been really a disaster. The other day was working a lot around the house. He and his sister (my adult dog) were outside playing. They had been out there 30mins or so and he ran inside, peed in the kitchen and ran back outside!! I took him outside to potty and he wouldn't hardly walk down the steps of the deck because he was looking at the rail and my hand to see where the potty cup was! He knows that cup means he gets a goodie when he pees! The entire time he is peeing he looks at me to make sure I dont leave! He runs over and sits. He knows he doesn't get treats without sitting. He's learn that, hes learned, stay, for the most part, drop it, and up and down, but won't petty outside! Any suggestions? I started off doing it wrong and used pads and a larger pen inside. The vet gave me better instructions. So I switched to taking him out on a reg schedule and rewarding him with a treat and lots of positive feedback. He's a 4 month old pit bull that I adopted at 3 months old. I've not had him neutered yet. Any any any suggestions????

At around 17:30 you talk about nose work. What do you mean by that?
@SimpawticoDogTraining6 жыл бұрын
It's scent detection activities. We teach dogs to use their noses to find certain odors, and make it more and more challenging as they get better. It's really fun and it's mostly "dog led" meaning there's no obedience work or anything like that. We set it up, show them how and provide feedback, and let them discover how fun it is. Then we just let them do their thing. Any dog can do it, it just takes time. There are lots of videos on the web about doing it with DIY materials. I follow Andrew Ramsey's method, but there are many ways to teach it. Take a look and try it out! It's great for a dog's brain!

Going out on a limb here, but I think because it was such a lengthy conversation, most people may have missed where all three commentators said there was the exception of apartments & nursing homes with small dogs. I’m trading a 6mo old Papillon (very small dog) and my take away was, use them if you need the, beware the possibility of missteps & stay the course. Clearly my little dog isn’t going out in the dead of winter where she would be in more danger of frostbite...so of course I’ll find alternative solutions... puppy pads or puppy litter box with grass. 🙏

What about cats passing through our garden,!could that be a risk of disease to my puppy if it’s not had all it’s jabs ? Thanks
@hedition93462 жыл бұрын
I am confused, so pre-vaccination socialization is a yes or no? The whole video says yes but says nothing on to worry or not to worry about catching potential disease. I brought my puppy home at her 8th week and let her socialize for 2 days, and she got diarrhea soon after. So do you say I risk it for the critical socialization period?
@SimpawticoDogTraining2 жыл бұрын
Check again at around the 10:00 mark up through about 11:45. In a safe, clean, indoor environment around other vaccinated dogs, you can start right away after the first shot. Wait until after the second to get more "worldly" in outdoor environment like your own yard or other well-regulated places. After the third, you should be good to go anywhere. The main take away is that there are opportunities to do your socialization at every vaccine level.

Great videos! My family is preparing to adopt a puppy in a few months - do you notice a difference between training a male and female? Do you have a recommendation as to which one to get for a family with kids? Keep up the great work!
@SimpawticoDogTraining6 жыл бұрын
Hi George. If you're getting a puppy I don't think the sex matters too much. There are plenty of old wives' tales about it and advice on the internet. Some breeds have tendencies one way or the other depending on sex, but it's much less of a factor than it's made out to be. A puppy can be molded to be a super family dog with consistent support and practice, regardless of breed or sex. The better conversation is to look at breed and find one that fits your lifestyle. That is to say, don't get a lazy breed if you're a really active family and vice versa. After that conversation, sex is really just a matter of preference or availability.

@SimpawticoDogTraining2 жыл бұрын
If you must use an indoor toilet, we're now recommending a litter box with a standard substrate for that. A big pan is recommended. You want a BIG potty area. Don’t use the standard clay-based litter; wood shavings are best. They smell good and they desiccate the poop for easier cleanup. It also prevents tracking of messes. 2nd best is recycled/pressed newspaper pellets. The pellets for cats (or even horses, the cheapest option) are exactly the same stuff, so don’t feel like you have to get something with a picture of a dog on the package. Make the substrate deep; it's a little bit of a cue to the dog to use it. If they're sleeping in the potty substrate, you have a problem with the crate or pen. Just remember that the indoor toilet is just a place holder to keep your potty training from backsliding when you can't supervise them and take them out.

Not sure if you're asking that from a trainer's perspective or a groomer's perspective. The technique of actually trimming is a questions for a groomer. Getting your dog to accept that process is a question a trainer can answer.

I'm a puppy person I love training and running and that's why I stick to my puppy to Furever. However my Other Mother cant stand puppies. She needs a elderly dog she can love on and be companions with. It's a option, it doesnt always have to be a puppy.

Is it too late to start at 15 weeks with other dogs ? Used to people but avoided dogs before this because of vaccination and hadn't seen this first

Question, while I was not home prior to receiving his last set of shots/vaccinations he may have interacted with the neighbors dog which they just recently “adopted” which was a stray. Is my puppy fine? Would you know if something was wrong right away? Or will you not know until years later? Would they be sick now or later? Thank you!!

Your puppy may be fine, or it may not. If you're concerned, take it to the vet

I am moving to a new small farm with my fiancé and we are getting a puppy shortly after we move it. I get him July 1st. I am unfamiliar with this place. I know the neighbors who are Amish had a dog but I havn't seen it in months. Should I be afraid to let my pup be out on the farm? I am paying a lot for this pup and I am already so attached I would die if something happened to him. Thoughts?

Hi Frederika! To do that justice we would need more than a 7-10 minute video could really do. It's a labor-intensive process and there just aren't "quick fixes" for it if you really want it to be a lifelong skill. That being said, we do have a PDF on our website that outlines the progression with diagrams: www.simpawtico-training.com/learning/downloadables/ Give it a look and see if it helps get you started.

Should I be worried about wild animals in my yard before the puppy has his 12 week shots? Deer, rabbits, birds, raccoons, snakes, turtles...will those create any issues for potty training and socializing outside?

I do have a cat (N pup N FISH!) but the way that was shouted out like that it seemed insulting. I love my Kitty N Gold Fishies N very proud of all my pet babies! I'm a NEW puppy mommy. I'm GOING to have questions! I would think the vets would appreciate peoples questions on pet care. Not to be bashed because a new pup after years of caring for an elderly dog. Its a big adjustment for the family N the new pup! It should be okay to ask questions w/out feeling like a dumb ass for asking!! I appreciate your channel N all you do, however I felt half way offended. Best approach would be to agree that puppy energy is more then an elderly dog. Not "what did you expect"? (instead "this is what to expect......")

Our vet put the fear of god in my girlfriend with our puppy about parvo and now it’s very difficult to get her to let me take the dog out to socialize him. Sucks.

Always enjoy your videos, but people need to realize the elephant in the room. These are people that he had chosen to do the interview with, people that he knows has the same view as he does. Just like human doctors, you will always find professionals that have completely different views on what they believe is the right way to do things. You could go to 10 vets and more than likely get 3 maybe 4 different opinions.
