Thank you @CryptoDad, I got the Keystone 3 Pro with your discount link. But I made a mistake by sending XRP to the Keystone 3 Pro wallet (using the keystone device XRP QR code for receiving end) before binding keystone with OKX mobile wallet. After sending the crypto to the keystone device, I don't see any XRP showing on the keystone device. Therefore I downloaded OKX wallet and connect with keystone, I manage and added XRP, but my XRP asset showing $0 balance on the wallet. Where did my XRP goes? How can I retrieve those funds? Please help 🙏

I stuck to the air gap set up, but they do have an included USB cable that should allow you to connect to some desktop apps but I believe they're just compatible with the browser extension wallets like Met Mask and Rabby. keyst.one/supported-wallets-and-assets I didn't have lot of time to play around with the usb cable, but I'll probably be doing a follow up video on connecting the device to the computer with the USB cable and interfacing with some crypto extension wallets. And no, there is no microSD card included. You have to buy it separately. You can get a cheap one on Amazon.

Hello Crypto Dad, Question, Why do you call the OKX a wallet as opposed to app? So when using the OKX along with Keystone Pro 3 are we actually using 2 wallets a cold and a hot?
@CryptoDad
@CryptoDad 3 ай бұрын
They are both components of the same wallet. I know it's a little confusing. The term wallet is a very generic term that covers a lot of ground. Logically, you can think of a cryptocurrency wallet as simply a cryptographic public/private key pair that maps to an address on the Bitcoin blockchain.(or a different blockchain, such as the Ethereum or Solana). But when we're dealing with a hardware wallet, we have separated the private key onto the device and the public key, or the public facing part of the wallet is covered by software, either desktop or app based. But it's quite common to refer to one or the other as a "wallet". To add to the confusion, many hardware wallets support multiple cryptocurrencies. And each of these cryptocurrencies are designed by accounts. But even the individual accounts can be considered separate crypto "wallets".

Do you have to create a new wallet when you first set up the device or can you restore an existing wallet?
@CryptoDad
@CryptoDad 6 ай бұрын
You can restore from the start if you want to. But I would be very careful what kind of seed phrase you use to restore your device. You should never use a seed phrase from a hot wallet like Metamask to restore a hardware wallet. Only use a seed phrase from a previous hardware wallet or one that you've generated properly on your own. There are many ways to generate valid seed phrases. But you have to be very careful to do it properly. Don't just make up words on your own. coinguides.org/generating-custom-mnemonic-seed-phrases/

I noticed that you authorized the maximum spending cap when swapping eth for shib. Do you feel comfortable with the default max setting in Metamask also? Ive been meaning to ask. I wonder if doing that leaves me open to wallet drain via malicious smart contract if I don't lower the cap.
@CryptoDad
@CryptoDad 7 ай бұрын
I usually don't do that. I usually like to leave extra Eth in the wallet
@CryptoDad
@CryptoDad 6 ай бұрын
I was rereading this and noticed you were talking about the max spending cap. I'm usually playing around with small amounts. And so I want to give myself full access to my balance. If you had a lot of crypto in the wallet, then I guess it would be smart to only authorize the amount you're willing to trade. However, rather than connecting your "go to" wallet with all of your holdings, it might make sense to have a separate wallet that you use just for trading in case something were to happen. That way you can compartmentalize your holdings. Only transfer enough crypto into the "working" wallet for the amount you're willing to trade. Keep the rest in your "storage only" wallet.

@@CryptoDad this video helped me choose the proper hardware wallet. I can't believe the manufacturer's website wanted 120usd shipping, with no way to change it, for two keystone wallets and two fabric cases. I found their Amazon store, and listed at the $90 Black Friday price, with free prime shipping. I have faith that they are doing the open source thing correctly. I am going to be worried about keystone if we don't get open source files by the end of 2023. Great studio and great videos - I'm in the process of preparing to launch my own KZbin channel, sometime in January.

Hi Crypto Dad, thanks for all your great videos. My new Keystone 3 Pro has arrived and I've set it up BUT I can't link the companion app. I don't want to use a 3rd party wallet like metamask or OKX. Does Keystone have a generic companion app for the KS3 Pro? I'm confused. Thanks
@CryptoDad
@CryptoDad 6 ай бұрын
Keystone no longer supports a companion app. They have decided to focus on making the best hardware wallet out there. Now the only options are 3rd party wallets. They do this in the interest of decentralization. You'll notice in the video that I'm using the OKX wallet with my Keystone 3 pro. The OKX wallet is actually much better than their old companion app anyway.

@@wouterwalhout5067 I’ve had the titan since 2020. The screen is finally starting to go. I haven’t had many issues with it. It seems more difficult to operate than some of the other non-air gapped wallets, especially for a newbie, but it worked out well for me. The customer service has been ok. I’ve really had to watch closely on transfer fees. Sometimes the automatic speed/fee can have you spending $40 to move a tiny amount of BTC. I just ordered the new one. The titan mini sucks though. I might try and send it back. The screen is terrible.

@@wouterwalhout5067waht are you even talking about? If anyone lost crypto while using an ellipal it was through user error because people don't really understand crypto. Ellipal has nothing to do with your crypto. They don't control your crypto only you do. If something went wrong with your ellipal you just enter your 24 seed recovery phrase into a new wallet. You clearly don't understand how crypto works.

I'm sorry but I don't quite get this.. So OKX is a hot wallet isn't it? So essentially the private keys live offline in the keystone device but the crypto's are stored in OKX and you need the keystone device to sign off transactions? So my question being, if your crypto's are in a hot wallet like OKX, doesn't that defeat the purpose of having a Keystone device? What if OKX go bust like other exchanges have in the past, what would happen to our cryptos in that scenario? Many thanks for your help!
@CryptoDad
@CryptoDad 7 ай бұрын
Cryptocurrency is stored on the blockchain. It is not stored inside the OKX wallet. The OKX wallet is merely a window (or interface) that can view your balances on the blockchain. All of the functionality of the OKX wallet has to be authorized by the Keystone 3 pro hardware device. The Keystone device holds the private keys offline separate for the OKX app. Therefore the wallet is not a hot wallet, but a cold or cold or offline wallet.

So you can’t send staked crypto to the keystone or stake through the wallet?
@CryptoDad
@CryptoDad 4 ай бұрын
Well, you can’t send staked crypto anywhere. Doesn’t matter where you’re staking it. In order to transfer cryptocurrency, It has to be un-staked from wherever it is you’re staking it. (unless we’re talking about StETH, which is a different animal) as for the second question, I believe it’s possible to stake crypto that you have protected by your keystone 3 pro as long as you use a compatible wallet like MetaMask or Keplr

On your recommendation I purchased the Keystone 3 Pro. For me it was a bit of a nightmare. I didn't have a USB to USB C cable so I had to buy one. I also had to buy a micro SD as the site said there was a problem with the USB update. The Keystone site is in dark mode and is difficult to read. Went through the setup process and then tried to see which additional wallet I should use. I could hardly see the writing on the screen as it was so small. Chose the first one Metamask to find it didn't support Bitcoin. Chose the next one only to find it wasn't supported in France. Eventually used Blue Wallet which wasn't easy to use. Eventually after several tries got it to work with the Keystone. The back and forth with the camera verifying doesn't inspire confidence. So I probably won't use it much. Went back to my tried and tested Bitfi which uses WiFi so is permanently air-gapped. Also Bitfi updates itself. I suspect the reason we never see 'wallet experts' using Bitfi is because the company doesn't offer freebies or kick-backs. As of this moment the Keystone has been charging over night and is still at 90%.
@CryptoDad
@CryptoDad 7 ай бұрын
I'm sorry you had issues getting your Keystone 3 Pro set up. Air gapped wallets are not for everyone. When I do my reviews, I try to stay objective and don't specifically "recommend" a particular wallet to anyone. I've done over 800 videos and reviewed many different types of wallets. I've also done several comparison videos where I go over the pros and cons of each wallet. I base my evaluation on several factors, The most important of which are security, usability and affordability. I find it somewhat puzzling that you went with the bitfi wallet instead. I've never done a review of the bitfi wallet, because I always considered it somewhat of a controversial device bordering on a scam. In fact, even McAfee admitted that his initial claim of the wallet being "unhackable" was a marketing ploy. I don't see how entering a 6 character (minimum) salt, and then a 30 character (minimum) passphrase every time you use the wallet is easier than using an air-gapped wallet, but to each his own. masterthecrypto.com/bitfi/
@baronsilverbaron757
@baronsilverbaron757 7 ай бұрын
@@CryptoDad Thanks for the reply. I also am only saying what I found about the Keystone. Too many points of failure. The Bitfi is only used for capital storage as I never trade or buy anything with Bitcoin. Having an opinion about Bitfi upon hearsay and without using a device is not a good look for someone evaluating wallets. At the moment I'm investigating the Tangem with a seed phrase. It seems to have security with ease of use and little points of failure. Cameras reading a QR code seem to me to be a real point of failure especially when you have no idea whether the QR code is genuine.

@@Marsexalted. yes I have always thought that the fact that you have to import outside software using an SD card is pretty much the same thing as connecting a cable. You’re still exposing the device to outside software. However, you do have cryptographic verification tools when you download the firmware updates, but nothing in this world is full proof. Having said that, a device wouldn’t be very useful. If you couldn’t run updates on it. Block chains are constantly getting updated so there has to be some sort of mechanism for running updates. Otherwise you would need to buy a new device every few months.

@CryptoDad

Pretty close. The only thing I would add is that your cryptocurrency is stored on the respective blockchains. The OKX wallet is the interface that allows you to view and manage your blockchain based assets. And the private key is stored on the Keystone 3 Pro

Thanks for the review. I received my Pro 3 wallet in the mail yesterday. Unfortunately I was unable to verify the validity of the device because after scanning the initial QR Code my 6-8 digit phrase was all lowercase and the website only allows uppercase entry by default. I emailed customer service and they were kind enough to offer me a refund or replacement, I opted for a refund.

The second time I scan I get an all lower-case code that doesn't verify on the website. I've sent a message to Customer Service but haven't received anything back. Also makes me nervous that none of the "get started" and "verification" URLs provided in the packaging are working. Received all 404 error messages. The only way to get to a setup website that worked was to go directly to the Keystone website > Resources. This is not giving me confidence in the device. :(

there's no keystone app anymore ? isn't that less secure to connect to another third party software ?
@CryptoDad
@CryptoDad 5 ай бұрын
Correct there is no longer a Keystone native app. The company says they do this in the interest of decentralization. They want to focus on building the wallet, improving the wallet, and keeping it secure. That is really the key to security. A 3rd party wallet does not make using a hardware device insecure. And third party wallets can focus on improving features that people are demanding like interacting with a wide variety of cryptos and web3 interfaces. It does sort of leave the ball in the user's core to evaluate 3rd party wallets for their security and functionality. That is kind of the point of crypto is self custody and self responsibility.

This make no sense, the coins aren't actually going to the wallet in this. This wallet seems like a glorified notepad that just tracks the addresses. It doesn't actually store the crypto, it's just staying on the OKX Wallet. The address on the OKX Wallet and the keystone wallets are literally the same.

@@Samuelwstone271 I am really not the one to be able to explain the Blockchain to you, but essentially you are right, but I think you are thinking about it like a traditional wallet or something. It is just a signing device gap wallets are the safest wallets. You might want to do a little more research on how all this works.
@CryptoDad
@CryptoDad 7 ай бұрын
You're correct. The hardware device is only part of the wallet. It is the private key part of the wallet. A cryptocurrency wallet consists of a private key and a public key. But many people think of the hardware device as the wallet itself. And you're right, there is no crypto in the hardware device. Cryptocurrency is not stored in wallets. It's stored on the blockchain. Wallets are simply the interface that allow you access to manage your crypto on the blockchain. So in many ways it's similar to a wallet, but different. It's not like the wallet in your pocket that you actually stick cash in. It's more like your ATM card that gives you access to your bank account. However, crypto is decentralized and not controlled by any centralized banks or governments. It is an entirely cooperative community project. Your second sentence talked about the soft part of the wallet being vulnerable. But the soft part of the wallet cannot authorize outgoing transactions. That's what the hardware device does. No crypto can be sent out of the soft wallet unless it is authorized by the private key, which is held separate on the hardware device. That's what's going on when we scan QR codes. The hardware device is receiving the request and authorizing it, and then sending out an authorization code.
