I disagree. As a beginner you will expend a lot of energy working out the correct mechanics. The lack of oxygen at 13000 feet makes this process WAAAAAAY harder. It is much easier to learn at the base at 9000 ft . When I have beginner friends come and visit i always take them to the base beginner area to learn before going to the summit.

@mikebatl1 good point. My only experience teaching someone is with my wife, and she loved it. Maybe the altitude just wasn't a problem for her but I see how it could be.

If you're a first timer and you've ended up at Keystone, consider doing the Scout run first as mentioned in the video. The run is a lot shorter than schoolmarm and you can walk back if you give up. Ideally you'd spend some time before your first day watching some YT tutorials or guides (things like snowplow wedge into wedge christe) and going with an experienced friend instead of going the first time with no preparation. The better you prepare ahead of time as a beginner, the easier it will be. Spend some time by the Summit House on flat ground before doing anything on the hill. Practice walking in your skis to get a feel for them. If you've never skied before look around to see what others do. Snowplow is fine at the beginning to stop, but it will wreck your legs, so after you get the hang of it you want to work on parallel skiing where you keep both skis pointed together.

I completely agree with the review from a beginner skier's perspective. The problem with most online reviews of resorts is that nearly everyone is advanced or expert skill level and they completely forgetten how hard it was to learn and the need for gradual progression. I refer to this condition as "expert's disease." Pros: Probably one of the better "bunny/learning" hills - _and_ one learning area is at the top - so you get the "Colorado" ski experience even as a first-timer. Excellent. Learning runs are serviced by chair lifts (As a dude, I hate platters) Green (although rather hard green) from the top to bottom - if you have the legs for it. Ideal for a "seasoned" beginner or better. Slightly less expensive lessons (vs Vail or Breck). Discount lift tickets with group lessons available (like all Vail resorts). I've never been scanned for Discovery or the carpet lift in Mountain House base, perhaps I simply got lucky. If you never advance off the bunny hill, you can get a refund for the lift ticket (we did this for my wife). Night skiing (sorta) Plenty of non-skier/rider activities at Keystone or nearby. Cons: The jump from learning hill to anything else is massive - crowds, difficulty and length conspire against the novice skier. Go to Break Peak 9 instead. Lines for Discovery can be 20 minutes or longer - which is a bit long for a short learning run. Learning run chair lifts are slow fixed grip doubles. Breck's are all high speed lifts. Parts of Schoolmarm would be classified as a blue at other resorts - especially if you are familiar with East coast resorts. Yes, there are mellow sections, but there are also relatively steep sections too that require a lot of terracing. If you are still a novice skier, it might take 90+ minutes to get down. Breck has a more diverse selection of greens which makes for a more natural progression. Progression: Bunny, learning hill, QuickSilver runs (Base 9), Rip's Ride runs (Peak 8), 5 Chair greens (Peak 8). Four O'Clock from 5 Chair all the way back to town. If you can ski all that without falling/walking and a degree of confidence - you're ready for Schoolmarm at Keystone or a Breck easy blue (Cashier/Bonanza). For all intense purposes, Keystone only has one "green" run - Schoolmarm - with a few alt routes that branch off and on from it. That's it. It also serves as a highway to other, more advanced runs - so you're mixing with all ability levels. And, not everyone understands the word "slow" LOL. I'd wait until you can do easy blues at Breck before going back to Keystone. The bottom line is that you want to be comfortable and confident skiing/riding, otherwise you're just surviving.

I completely agree with Schoolmarm. As someone that learned on the East Coast how to ski, the first time I went to Keystone and got on Schoolmarm I couldn't help but think how steep this was for a green.

@@stevenle1760 Yeap. I have since skied Endeavor and Scout - which are short and relatively easy greens (also Discovery). Still a big jump from the bunny hill but not nearly as bad as Schoolmarm or other greens at Keystone. But, even going from Scout to Schoolmarm is a big jump in skill and endurance.

Echo, Ski Cooper, Granby Ranch and Loveland Valley are all great options for beginners - especially if a friend will be helping you. Keystone/Breck are fine if you take lessons since the discount on lift tickets is actually pretty great if you combine it with group lessons. My main issue is the lack of early progression at Keystone.

@@marketingmasters3550 If you live in the Midwest or have a compelling reason to go there (relatives/friends) - then small Midwest resorts can be a good place to learn or get your ski fix. But, it is normally cheaper to fly into Salt Lake City or Denver than most Midwest cities, so they aren't great "destination" resorts. I used to ski in West Virginia when it was within driving distance. When I moved to Florida, WV was significantly less desirable, so we just flew to Colorado instead. Also, once you have skied Rocky Mountain snow, it spoils you.

As a beginner at Breck you will spend your whole day in lift lines and avoiding the hoards of other punters taking up every square inch of the run. If you can get more space to do your turns and longer green runs at Key then thats the best place for a beginner. If your legs get pumped you can just go inside.

I have taught two of my kids at Keystone. It worked well and they are now skiing blues, Mozart is there favorite. The youngest (2 year old) starts this year at Keystone. Yet I totally agree in what you are putting down. I learned at Keystone when I was 10 and my dad took me to the top of Schoolmarm. Took me 3 hours to get down but at the bottom I knew what to do. I totally think there are better places but part of it for me is that is where I learned so that is where I am teaching my kids. Part of it too is that as a dad it gives me confidence to know the mountain like the back of my hand.

I totally agree about schoolmarm, but for people who you know don't have as much fear jumping onto skis or a board should hit it because it challenges you in every way all the way down. Fully agree with what you said about Keystone. I've been skiing in the midwest from 2008 to 2018. Then my buddies and I went to Keystone and a-basin for our first Rockies experience. Even with skiing for 10 years, I struggled a lot that first time going. I then went once a year to Keystone from 2018 to 2021 and moved out here in 2022. I'm good now going down the blues and some black diamonds, but it took a while for me to get used to the terrain. Keystone I think is a great place for intermediate skiers/snowboarders. I think the three different peaks gives a lot to offer, but they aren't as easy as the blues/greens in breck

My entire family learned on Schoolmarm & Silver Spoon and I think having one or two really long wide green runs is a perfect place for your first day. The reason is familiarity and less time spent on a lift or in line. You don't need (or want) to be bouncing across several shorter green runs on your first/second day, instead you want to become familiar with a run and lift and be able to focus on learning technique not experiencing the wonders a resort has to offer, save that for day 3. Besides, if you have any athletic ability at all and can confidently water ski, skate board, wake board or whatever without wiping out constantly you *should* be able to move on to most of Keystone's blue runs on your second day, and that exponentially broadens your access to Keystone including North Peak and Outback's blues.

I feel like folks get experts disease once they are able to do blues with any degree of confidence. As a beginner skier, I disagree. It isn't about crowds, although they don't help. The issue is progression. While the learning areas are actually great (I hate platter lifts) - there is basically nothing to progress to. Even lapping from Peru lift is aggressive for a novice skier. If you are an adult, you can't pizza your way down Schoolmarm. Breck's Peak 9 has at least 5 different trails you can basically point yourself downhill and do large sweeping turns to control speed. Then, when you are ready, you can do the greens of Peak 8 - which are only slightly more steep. After mastering all that with parallel turns, you are ready for Keystone greens. Then, back to Breck for easy blues.

@@respond_code3 The greens off the QuickSilver lift are long but not too long and very wide and mellow. They would make a great transition from Bunny and learning hill. Honestly, the hardest part of those runs is simply getting off the lift. If you can do that, you are golden. Funny enough my first ever colorado mountain (michigan boy here) was keystone back in like 2000 or 2001. Did a week there, then a couple days at breck and then topped in off with 3 or 4 days at a-basin....hows that playlist for a barely intermediate rider back then haha. That was back before keystone had a park lol. Watched the iirc the vans tripple crown at breck. Small jumps were bigger than michigan big jumps but so much easier to ride. Almost died getting to it though. Quickly learned a double black in colarado =/= double black in michigan. Whatever that shortcut looking run to get to the other peak where the park was while in fact short was insanely steep and covered in mougals. I think 2/3rds the way down i just hiked out. The new years party at the base of keystone was amazing though idk if they still do it but that was wild.

Schoolmarm is where beginners go to cry. I've seen so many folks take their first timer loves one on schoolmarm thinking it's a great idea but for a green it's much harder than a bunny slope and crowded. It ends up 3.5 miles of terror for those first timers.

Facts. I literally saw 5 triages happening at the same time on schoolmarm. Like I don’t even think there were enough sleds or patrollers. I’ve known patrollers who quit because of the lack of care for safety on that mountain. It’s all about the bottom line. They literally relabeled runs from blue to black, due to all the disasters on that mountain, but still keep advertising to beginners. All they do is pull passes from better skiers and riders thinking that’s the problem!! No, it’s the sheer amount of beginners on the mountain who are the problem. Advanced skier and riders won’t even go they anymore, due to this, so the problem gets exponentially worse every year.

Exactly! The learning areas might be OK for a newbie on a first or second day, but beyond that, all there is is one novice run that also serves as access to several runs for more advanced skiers/boarders. It's really a pretty terrible situation. And the main blues on Dercum, are solid blues, so not a good spot for novices (unlike the blues on Peak 7 at Breck). Keystone desperately needs to create a run parallel to Schoolmarm, and split the traffic to the blue runs from the novices (it's in their old master plan). Still wouldn't be a lot of Green terrain, but at least that could make novices more comfortable.

The thing keystone has going for it is that the ski school costs less than breck, at least in prior years

Well thats disappointing. I'm staying at Breck this Dec 18th. About a 1 min walk from the quick silver lift. But since I Live in FL I thought it would be cool to hit up Keystone and Abasin since they are a 26 min drive away. Mostly just to say I've been there. I add trail signs on my snowboard wall for every mountain I visit. But I'm still a beginner sadly. I only have 3 trail signs so far. Was hoping to add 3 more in 1 trip. I guess it depends how badly I eat shit at breck this trip. If I'm doing okay maybe I'll swing by Keystone. If I have a epic pass I assume it could be used at 2 mountains in the same day. Like breck and Keystone? Copper was on my list to vist at 40 min away but I saw they weren't on Epic. Emailed them to see if they do a half day pass and that was a no. Abasin said they used to do a 1/4day pass. But not sure if they're bringing that back this year

This is a problem imo for all of the "resort" areas in Colorado. Best learner area in the state is Loveland Valley. Dedicated area. No advanced peeps weaving in and out. Other great place for beginners is Granby. Peak 9 is fine, but it's SO crowded esp on the weekends. Granby and LV for small crowds and easy slopes. West side of Copper is also okay, but the weekend crowds are awful.

Yeah imo probably the best beginner hill in colorado is either breck or winter park. Breck for one because a new intermediate skier gets to hit up three peaks in one day not to mention the ton of greens at the bottom of peak 9. Its weird that keystone markets to families when other hills might have more greens. Winter park has a ton of stuff on the gemini thats good for newer skiers. Then once youre intermediate at WP, cranmer is a huge and mellow blue to hit it up….this comment was weitten before you mentioned breck in the video 😂😂😂

I need 49 or perhaps 50 skiing shoes as 47 and 48 were too narrow for my wide feet. My normal size is 44 bear food or 45 lether or 46 normal or 47 important parties like funeral and wedding. Does anyone know a shoe brand that sells wide shoes? Not just widened shoes, wide like bearfoot shoes that it goes wide to the end instead of some high heel killer cut at the end! Just like Donald Duck's feet 😂 wide and flat.

I started out at Breck and I would say the beginner area in Keystone gives so much more space to actually attempt to initiate and link a turn. Personally, Keystone has Breck beat a million times with their beginner hill. Also the instructors at Keystone are top notch. In 2 days I was going down Blues casually, making it through flats and hit a few minor trees. Overall recommend Keystone for first timers and beginners by far. Keystone had a family vibe and I got close with the actual instructors there, Breck rubbed me the wrong way and the instructors seemed less personable and more bent on holding back my progress. Personal opinion, but I'm taking my beginner sister and brother to Keystone this Dec.

My son (a *huge* fan of yours I found out today!) says you actually live in Silverthorne like we do! He does Special Olympics at Copper Mountain. Good to see a local on the KZbins. 😊 He does BOEC at Keystone and finally was able to do the entire of School Marm on his snowboard last year after switching from skiing a few years ago. If you ever want to profile or collab with the Summit County Special Olympics team and come ski or snowboard at Copper, lmk! Sometimes we can get the Summit Daily out and maybe they could cover your channel too.
