I miss my Earl! He was my first betta(we had a couple growing up but Earl was the first that I bought for myself). I had him for almost 6 years. Started out in a bowl.. then a 1.7 gal tank where he stayed for the remainder of his life. He sure was tough cause I didn't have a heater for most of his life. I got one when he was like 4, and he was so happy! One day I came home and it was like 105°F that day.. his water temp had spiked to like 99°F and he looked crazy, like he was cooking in there! His eyes were popping out and he was sideways and just looked at me like, "HELP!".. I panicked and unplugged the heater.. totally thought he was gonna die but he pulled through and went back to normal. Had him for a couple more years after that. He survived the ups and down of me learning about fish and his needs. All the time he was my little buddy who was always happy to see me, and I him❤ miss that guy. I've learned a lot since my first betta! Lol

I took so much care putting together the most ideal betta tank I could! 15 gallon cube. A fluval 107 filter, but turned way down so there wasn't too much current. A TON of plants, including water lettuce, and anubias plants with big leaves near the surface to rest on. Driftwood that I sanded carefully so nothing would tear his fins. Slate with no sharp edges. Caves for hiding in, lots of safe hiding spots, Indian almond leaves, temp set to 80... I pre-cycled by running the cannister in an existing mature tank for 3 weeks, which shortened the nitrogen cycle in the new tank to a single week! Aaaaaaand I made a major mistake by adding two honey gourami to my main tank when I already had one established adult. Established adult wasn't having it, and I was scared the juveniles would die of stress or get beat up, so now I have a 15 gallon cube with a single honey gourami in it. Heh! Planning to get some kuhlli loaches for the tank, and then I have to decide if I want to keep the honey gourami in it (he is a prior commitment, after all) and set up a 10 gallon I recently got for a betta, or see if time outside of his old territory while the other two gourami grow up will lead to a better balance, or war. At any rate, I think we should all do our best to make the lives of any beings under our care as happy, healthy, and full of enrichment as possible.

I had a terrifying scare with my Betta. I did my water change for his 10 gallon tank as usual, but a couple days later I noticed that his fins were ragged. And it was getting worse. I used my test kit and discovered to my horror that there was 3ppm ammonia in there! Turns out my city water has ammonia now when it never did before... My poor boy lost half his tail to ammonia burns from this fiasco. Thank heavens I caught it in time to save him and his snails. His tail has just started to visibly grow back today.

lifespan also can be altered by the source of the fish. chain stores like petco/smart who keep bettas in poor conditions, those fish likely wont live as long as a healthily bred one. even if you do put one in perfect conditions, the origin most likely effect the lifespan

You're ABSOLUTELY right! I purchased 3 different Bettas in a week because they kept dying.
@purplephoenix49693 жыл бұрын
This is very true. Our first Betta was from a local pet shop. The tanks never looked that clean, Bettas were in with other, nippy fish and often other Betta (usually just the females, but tanks were small and the females were covered in stress stripes) etc. We used to go in to get other pet bits. One day I sent my son to look at the fish while I got bits. He fell in love with a male Betta. We'd never had fish and I didn't want to get a full set up and then a month later, he's not interested, so we left it. We had a holiday booked and I knew nothing about fish, definitely nothing about Betta. We kept popping back and he kept looking at that one fish, he even named it. That's when I knew, if he didn't get sold he would be coming home with us at some point. I did loads of research. Got a 10 gallon tank with a heater, filter, live plants, some with big leaves, so he could rest on them as I'd read Bettas liked that. He also had a floating log thing. I started cycling the tank. A couple of months later, the tank was finally ready and we went to pick him up. He was a veiltail, but his poor fins were a raggedy mess. It was 6 months since my son had first seen him and fallen in love. He was a full grown when we first saw him, not young and we'd not been in there and looked at the fish before that first time we saw him, so he coukd potentially have been in those cramped, less than ideal conditions, with nippy tank mates for over a year for all I know. He was a goid sized male when we got him and hadn't grown since the first time we saw him, so my guess was he was a minimum of 9 months old when we got him, but he could have been a lot older than that. He loved his new home, which he shared with a couple of nerite snails. Sadly we only had him a year and a half before he passed away. His fins started growing back shortly after he moved in with us, partially because of the regular water changes and partly because of the Indian Almond Leaves I put in the tank with him. I think unfortunately, his life before he came to us limited how long we would get to enjoy his company. I also very much doubt they were that bothered about good genetics either, so that may have been a factor too.

I am lucky, he has been a very good tank mate for my shrimpies and watching them scurry around seems to provide some enrichment for him. He is target trained and gets hand fed, no wasted food. He enjoys gentle pats and head boops as well. I doubt if I will ever dare to have another betta in that tank when Martok is gone, I don’t want all my shrimpies to get slaughtered 😱

Hi! I'm a seasoned fish keeper from Malaysia and I love Bettas. I have 5 low tech planted community tanks and all of them hold a Betta. However, in the last 2 years since I have started keeping Bettas I have lost my 8 Bettas all to Dropsy disease to a point now it's too depressing to keep a Betta anymore. All my other community fishes such as Tetras and Corys are all fine. What is your view on Dropsy and how to deal with it as the online research I've done doesn't give a cure as it is a genetic related disease...

Not sure why I watched this. I usually hate Betta videos. I've had Betta's off and on since I was a kid. I never used less than a ten gallon tank for them. I bred them and sold or gave them away. It has always amazed me how terribly abused and neglected this fish is. And many people in general, get dogs, cats, reptiles etc. And never read or watch a video on how to raise them. And people buying fish are even worse. Straight tap water in a tall skinny vase. No water conditioner. No live plants. Little room to swim in. Their suffering goes on and on. And people say, well..... it's just a fish. Well no, once home, it's your pet and your responsibility to give it the best life possible. Most of the blame is on the Fish and Pet Stores. They want a quick sale. And will even suggest some of the smallest containers for Betta's. If you want a Pet, give it the best home you can.

Out of all the bettas I've kept, the biggest killer was diseases. My local chain fish store wasn't quarantining fish and I found out later from someone who used to work there that they had bettas dying every day because the 30 or so betta boxes all shared water and so every fish would come in healthy and pick up a disease from the shared sump water. I now treat every single fish I buy with antifungals and antibiotics as soon as I get them home. Solved the issue.

I use garlic and good food to stop white spot and other things like fungus. I haven't had white spot or anything for years. They're great jumpers and can fit through really tiny gaps. We lost one of ours from her jumping out of the tank through the tiny gap where the airline and heater cable was. I couldn't see her anywhere in the tank, looked all over the tank, beside the tank, then spotted her behind it. I thought she was dead, but she wasn't, but was in a bad way. I tried medication and daily water changes and she improved a lot, but was never quite the same. A few months later she was gone :-( I'm pretty sure it just weakened her too much :-( I hadn't been near the tank for a couple of hours, so I have no clue how long she'd been out of the tank, but even if it was only 10 minutes, it won't have done her good. If you think your Betta can't possibly fit through a gap, block it anyway, just to be safe.

This was very helpful. Usually I get at least 3 to 5 yrs with my bettas. This last one I got 2 to 3 yrs ago and he's just not happy. I've tried so many things to get him back to normal health but he's not 100% better yet. Hoping he pulls through with maintenance and medicine. I feel so bad for him. My tanks are stripping within normal range and I do regular water changes so it's hard to tell what it is.

I got a beta for Christmas, a very beautiful blue one, named him Finn , I had him for maybe a year and he developed a swim bladder issue where he couldn’t swim down anymore, we looked up how to help him and treated him with natural laxatives as instructed, it was a rollercoaster and his condition went up and down until one day he just gave up, he stopped eating. My first ever fish who I loved the most essentially committed suicide, I was so sad and scarred, I stuck to keeping khuli loaches since then, both the ones I got are still alive, Larry and louie. I’ll never forget Finn though

I love how serious you are taking this. Finally someone that is trying to understand these little misunderstood little friends. I used to sell them and stopped. The sells are very fast but at what cost. I now own 3 females and males from my betta lines and never will sell them again. People get to be a little unresponsible and they are not the ones paying tbe price. The main killer for bettas if not understanding them. I breed my bettas on natural environment. I do not know much about the best filters, heaters etc. But I know with a little bit of effort you can make your betta happy.

I have three female and one male Betta living harmoniously in a 37 gallon aquarium. I have it filled with aquarium plants that are live and a couple of fake colorful ornamental plants and a floating log. They seem to be happy. One of them was very aggressive when I first got her so I kept her in a smaller tank for a week and then I re-introduced her to the pack and she was fine after that. I probably do overfeed them, so I will need to watch that, I do keep the water warm and I monitor the nitrogen levels constantly and I did not know about the dark water although the tank that I have does have a blue light which I use during the early evening hours.

Not just Betas, but all fish. Please use a muffler on your air supply to remove the humm from your pump. Put your ear on the tank and you'll know why. They have to live with it with no way out. So all you need is a small pop bottle and put the air through it bfore the tank.

I got betta as gift for Xmas & 2.5 ga. Koller tank with filter and bought small heater and thermometer (temp 78). Tank sitting on desk in kitchen not near window and gets plenty of fresh light. Water was crystal clear. He hides behind filter and rarely swims around. 1 week later, changed 25% of water. Added conditioner. Water been cloudy ever since. Also treated with API quick start. Not over feeding with Betta Bio-gold pellets (3 pellets 1 x day). Betta still not swimming around much and doesn’t seem to be eating despite I turn off pump while feeding. I’ve watched all your videos but still not seeing where you explain how to clean murky water or what caused this and how to fix it?? Please advice?

My first betta lived for about two and a half years. Looking back, I think the reason that was possible was due to pure coincidence that the tank was in MY room, which was also the warmest room in the house. I am still sad to know that I didn't give my little buddy the life he fully deserved, but I do feel a bit better thinking about how the entire time he was alive he was a very happy healthy little fish given the fact that he was living in South Dakota

I have a Betta in a one gallon tank but this wasn't the tank I originally chosen as when I first got him he had a 10gallon tank but he was refusing to eat and he wouldn't move from the corner of the tank he would just sit their so all of his food would just collect at the bottom making the water dirty way to fast so I was forced to put him in a 1 gallon because I thought he made of been sick so the one gallon was just so I could treat him but ended up finding out that my little better was much more happier in it's 1 gallon as as soon I stuck him in the one gallon the next day he started playing, swimming and eating so I decided to stick him back into the 10 gallon he ended up not wanting to eat swim nor play so I had to put him back in the small tank to get him active and get him to eat. I found out that while their are tons of Bettas happier in big tanks their are also some Bettas who are happier in small tanks I think it all depends on their personalities I hate his small tank but I realize it's not what I like but what my little fella likes. I know some people will hate on me because of it but they won't understand until they end up with a Betta in my situation he been living in his 1 gallon for almost 8 years this is his 7th year living in this tank.

Question: When it comes to tank mates and feeding, is there a food that can be beneficial to both tank mate (ie tetra) and the betta, or you have to give different food?

I am able to feed my Betta and tetras bug bites the betta size ones as well as Frozen brine shrimp and Frozen bloodworms all of my fish go crazy for that stuff. I feed them the foods interchanged throughout the week. All three are beneficial to all the fish and it keeps them from getting bored.

When I was younger and had bettas I never used heaters mine lived well enough but never were as boldly colored as yours I feel horrible that they probably were stressed because I had thought at the time I was going above and beyond for them since each one had a five gallon with its own filtration system. I decided to move my 3 ember tetras from my community tank in with my beta. They were totally lost in the bigger tank. In the 10 with the beta they seem to be doing well. He is ignoring them because they're so small... and they're fast enough to evade him if he decides to go after them.
@thejasminedragonmerchant68433 жыл бұрын
If your betta is living it up in a 10 gallon, might I suggest a few shrimp or snails if you want to provide "roommates"? Ramshorn snails are decent for algae cleanup and don't spawn lots of babies in the tank (they lay their eggs above the waterline, so you can scoop them out if you don't want more), plus they come in several beautiful colours. Shrimp have a roughly 50/50 chance of surviving with your Betta since like most carnivorous fish they might try snacking on the smaller/weaker shrimp, but it all depends on your fish's temperment and how many hiding spots the shrimp have to escape predation. It's entirely possible they might get along!

But I didn't know they like dark water! When he heals, I'll get a catalpa leaf for him. He has some Cardinal tetras as his mates that he gets along with just fine and a nerite snail for humor that he loves to bonk on the head. And I LOVE your sense of humor!

I had a betta back in 2018. First kept him in a one-gallon tank I cleaned every few days until his 10-gal was done developing. I do regret keeping him in that, and I don't know exactly what caused it, but he got dropsy a year later. Did research on treating it, bought different medications to help fight treat it (didn't do all at once, and I know some can be used together, but I was nervous to use them altogether). This time, I took time to make sure I had a proper setup. Blackwater, live plants, shelters to hide away (rock cave with leaves covering it, plants sitting in front, tree roots with leaves dangling over it as a little canopy), planted light, heated to 78°-82°, away from windows and excess light, clean once a week at the latest, and the tank was sat up in an area with low human traffic. I also don't have to worry about mass chlorine/heavy metal dumps into my water supply. I'm running on well water, and it's done me well. Still treat it since it doesn't hurt anything, and the treatment I use (Fritz A.C.C.R) helps keep potiental ammonia spikes from happening. I gave that tank a while to develop, and checked to see if my local fish shop could hold the betta I wanted (absolutely adorable little guy. He's extremely nice, and never flared up at people in the store, and still hasn't here). Galaxy Koi Betta, bright blue body with orange, red, and white fins.

Don’t get me wrong no animal is super easy or cheap but betts truly are easy to anyone really looking for them. Just get a decent sized ten gallon tank, put some plants in there a hidey hole or two and a good heater(I use a simple tube heater). Buy a sink in thermometer as well(to me it’s essential). Truly there easy, they still take a bit of work but there great fish.

I age my water, keep my Bettas in community tanks with live plants, and I change at least 20% of tank water more than once a week. My big fear is power outages, any unknown water contaminants, and loss of a regular maintenance routine caused by being away from the aquarium for extended periods.
