Advocates work to make the Salmonberry Trail a reality

The plan is to convert an abandoned railroad line between Washington and Tillamook counties into a trail, but it needs funding and volunteers.

Why do the rails need to be removed? Can't the area between the rails be filled in with the rails as side bars? Seems like it is costly to remove the rails and ties.

They can make money and cause trip hazards

The rails are still in good enough condition that they can be reclaimed and used by other operating railroads around the country.

POTB still exists, and they chose not to repair the line after the second "100 year" storm in ten years. It was already having financial problems even before the wash-outs.

Will this trail have good connections to Trimet? It's really important to make this available to people dwelling in more urban areas without requiring a car to get there.

There's a TriMet ride connection in Banks, which is the eastern terminus of the line. Future connections with other trails like the Council Creek trail could mean that someday folks can bike the entire distance to the coast.

This trail isn't under any one government department or jurisdiction, and the majority of funding so far has come from private donors.
