I have immense respect for Lexie for refusing to put up with the so-called "entertainment" nonsense. Sure, the viewing percentages might have soared because of it, which shows it's what people want, but it was still a nasty move by the production team. First, they lied about this being a survival show, and then they promised the contestants that their personal rankings would stay private, only to expose them for everyone to see. I'll always support Lexie. It's wild because she had a strong chance of making it into the group-the rankings, the production team, and the fans were all in her favor.

Lol I haven't gotten there yet, but I already KNOW she's the one who left. And I totally respect her for it, too. Everything about the program was really wonderful & special, until they turned it into a survival show and if I were her, I'd feel the same way. The production team who is responsible for "making it entertainment" don't care about the girls the way the T&D team did... and if I were suddenly being disrespected and used as a pawn like that, I'd peace tf out too! (Except I wouldn't have at her age, so I respect her even more for having such integrity!)

Credit to whoever initially said it, Manon is from Switzerland. Meaning her take on wellness was on par for her country, but not the opposing countries of the girls. Leading to unfair assumptions of her being “arrogant” …she was also the eldest, and I’m sure that came into play with “curfew” , as well as a grown woman whom probably hadn’t had to obey a curfew since 17/18💀
@KPopwithKhadija4 ай бұрын
BOTH VERY GOOD POINTSSSSSSS. I mean, the curfew thing is what it is - even if you aren't used to it, you gotta just get used to it if you're in a company lol. But the mentality around rest & wellness is so different than the American/puritan "hustle culture" that some of the other girls had. Even without having experience with dance training, where that's something you learn very young, just overall the cultural difference would have been something to consider!

@@1wefreshdefender Yes, I think none of these girls deserve to be hated for ANY of their reactions, tbh. Manon did her best in that situation, even if her best wasn't up to the standard expected/needed... but she's obviously learned and changed her work ethic, which we can see clearly. Sophia & Lara were rightfully frustrated with the intense situation and they responded with their genuine emotions... hopefully as time has passed, they've been able to communicate through those frustrations and get to a place that things don't feel like that anymore. If they're in a group together, there are GOING to be more conflicts as time goes by. All anyone can do is learn and try to be better!

@TP194 ай бұрын
I disagree. Feelings are valid, but just because you feel something doesn’t mean you can take out those feelings negatively on others. In the discourse it gets lost that being right and wrong aren’t mutually exclusive because as humans we are complicated and the situations we are put in are nuanced. Manon was in the wrong because the missed rehearsals and wasn’t putting in the effort and she had every right to stand up for herself and voice her concerns when she felt an uncomfortable energy with the other girls. Lara and Sophie were right about feeling annoyed with Manon. They were wrong with making faces and laughing at her. These are human beings that are out in a messy situation. The less we can do as fans is to look at these situations as examples or humans being nuanced and complex while also not added fire to something that probably not even smoking anymore.

At first I had the same reaction to Manon not being at the house and skipping practices, and I fully understand everyon's frustration with her, but then it HIT ME: How would you feel if you and everyone else around you knew you were 1. bit of an industry plant 2. more or less chosen for your looks over talent 3. really had no concept or kpop before you were picked to do this AND THEN you show up... by yourself... as the first new girl in a house that already has pre-established dynamics and relationships you're entering into? I might crack under pressure and freak out a bit too under similar circumstances NOW, let alone at her age. To see where she was and then to where she ends up by the end of this doc and now as a fully integrated member of the group makes me so incredibly proud of her. Especially the way she ends up owning EVERYTHING and taking the needed accountability.

Lots of people have commented on the "hustle culture" of America being a factor, but there's also the expectation within the Kpop realm that you grind yourself to the bone when training. South Korea has an even worse work-life culture than the US does. It seems to me that Manon didn't really know much about Kpop before this so it's hard to say that she fully understood the expectations of the program. Was she fully aware of what this was? I also think it's fair to mention that maybe Manon just didn't think she had a shot. It doesn't appear that she'd considered a career in singing and dancing before this and to join this program with a bunch of girls who not only had been training together for months at that point but were also mostly Kpop fans who had wanted this all for years, she probably just didn't feel like she had much of a chance of catching up. Then the public reactions came and she realized that despite some of her core skills being less developed, people loved her. I think that's when she realized that she had a genuine shot at ending up in the group, and she began to invest herself into the experience fully. I don't think it's some lack of character on her part not to sink herself into something that she felt wasn't going to pan out for her. I personally think people are blowing the interpersonal drama out of proportion, too. Adela and Sophia did rub me the wrong way a bit, but I also understand completely why they were upset. Adela was there from the jump, had only ever received praise from the trainers and was treated like a certain in for the group, and then the response from the public was complete disinterest if not dislike. No matter how tough she acts, it must have been really painful to go through that, especially being so young, and a young woman, at that. A lot of people are forgetting that this experience was purposely designed to be an emotional pressure cooker for drama's sake, and that it's not necessarily a good indicator of the girls' actual personalities.
@KPopwithKhadija4 ай бұрын
YES! All of this! I kind of touched on all of these points in my newest reactions (not uploaded yet), but I think we need to remember the full picture and the nuance in this show. People who have been training their whole lives have a different mentality they are used to. People who are k-pop fans understand the training system & what is expected. AND Manon knew from Day 1 that she wasn't as skilled as the other girls, she knew they already kind of resented her for the way she was brought in, etc. And she's a more introverted, reserved person. So her attitude wasn't necessarily right but it was understandable and she had the opportunity to learn & grow! Same with the other girls - they were frustrated & acted in ways I'm sure they regret, but they grew from it and I can only hope are better people now. Their actions were 100% what I expected from young girls being put in this kind of situation.

UNFORTUNATELY... especially in this day and age, fandoms are like that. It is unavoidable. If it wasn't this docuseries, it would be something else that would divide the fandom and turn fans of one member against fans of another. It happens with every group, no matter how long they've been out, no matter how dedicated the overall fanbase is. So, I don't think the company made a mistake by putting this series out now - if it's unavoidable, might as well show everything now, get people talking and get the name KATSEYE trending online, etc. Again, the company cares about the BUSINESS more than they care about the idols, unfortunately, and in business... even bad press is good press. 😖

It's actually so sad when people say that Adela is entitled and that she had issues with her attitude when her feelings about Manon were valid. She had a point that people never gave them, specifically her, a chance to show their skills when the first elimination were, quite frankly, based on visuals. At the get go, Adela constantly ranked at the top in both vocals and dancing. Additionally, Adela said that she auditioned as a vocalist, so her being placed in the dancing category for the first mission was basically just the program killing her off. Her saying that it was unfair that Manon, who deliberately missed practices, being safeguarded from being eliminated due to the votes, is valid. Adela was also a team player, shown when we saw sacrificing her time mentoring the newly welcomed girls. It's also unfair for Adela to be called entitled when she said that she just wanted representation for Slovakia, which is what every other girl is also aiming for their own country.

It's so nice to hear a perspective from someone who has ACTUALLY BEEN IN A GROUP. I definitely think all the members who had to do the Mission 1 dance performances were at a disadvantage for fan voting, not only was the choreo not reflective of how good some of the dancers were almost all of them ranked low compared to the vocal teams. (and some of them were more than qualified to be in the vocal teams but did not get to show us vocals until mission 2) Also that mashup was NOT IT imo, they should have just picked one song lol. Edit: The other issue people had with dream academy is that during the first mission we had NOTHING to go off of because normally in a survival show the things that are being shown in the documentary would have been things we could see to actually get to know the people we are voting for.
@KPopwithKhadija4 ай бұрын
Yeah this whole format is really interesting to me! I liked the fact that it was just performances and not a full survival show, cuz sometimes audiences are swayed by personalities rather than talent... but it seems like people still voted based on looks/nationality instead of talent so dunno if it really helped. And then the fact that Mission 1 was vocals vs dance was weird cuz how can you compare apples & oranges? AND, like you said, you can't really see the full range of what some girls can offer cuz they are only showing you one aspect. Very interesting. And a bit strange, tbh.

Yeahhhhhh, my last video, some people were going back & forth in the comments about Black representation and how people should be happy that there are Black & Brown girls on the show. But all 3 Black girls were very lightskinned or mixed and had very eurocentric features. Manon is ABSOLUTELY praised for her beauty (which I agree - I say it a million times in my reaction; she's stunning) but we can acknowledge that she's a very specific type of Black girl. I understood immediately why they went out of their way to find her, train her, bring her in to the program even though she had NO skills. They know what that specific type of Black girl aesthetic can do in the entertainment industry. Even Chloe Bailey & Marsei Martin are stunning, but not the full range of beauty that exists in the Black community! It's a very real point and something worth talking about... I don't think its helpful that people are trying to brush that under the rug.

I very genuinely disagree about manon’s performances, and I’ve felt this way since dream academy. I am just in love with her voice and I think she’s always had everything except the hyper-expressive face. I do very really think she earned her spot in the top six for more than just being undeniably stunning. To me this whole “pretty privilege” conversation has always had more than a twinge of antiblackness. She just connected with a strong audience really fast. Black girls wanna see a black girl win and she showcased her best talent first. The fearless performance is really what secured her spot and I’ve never seen anyone say she didn’t bring it for that. To your point of this being edited and never knowing the full story. I think it’s a bit silly to not apply that to the narrative around manon’s absences and struggles as well. To me and a lot of the black audience watching it mirrored our experiences with antiblackness in workplaces. Especially if you’re not the outgoing type. I think it’s worth being critical of the narrative they sold around her especially when we know as black women how much non-black people villainize us for things they do as well.

Bang even said he wanted it to be like the Olympics, their attitude to wards these girls and the way they exploit their vulnerability for money is so gross. They made it such a toxic environment for the girls, so it’s no wonder they turned on each other. You can tell that those girls are trauma-bonded for life! Yeah episode 6 is where they really lost me. I understand creating drama for the show to bring in more viewers but it was just gross to me. Especially since the girls were told their answers to who would be in the group would not be shared publicly. From the rest of these episodes I don't think this show does these girls much favors and has created unhealthy fanwars in the fandom.

Yeahhhhhhh, I'm having a hard time going back to finish the last 2 episodes. Everything I LOVED about this series feels like it was wiped away in this one episode, which sucks. But I'll see how the rest of it goes and leave my final opinion until then. (Filming it tonight... I just keep procrastinating! I think cuz I'm nervous haha)

i watched every episode of this documentary except the finale, purely because by this point the episode after it was actually affecting me mentally. I didn't watch the dream academy performances or eliminations until after I saw the documentary. From my perspective, the actual survival show posted before the documentary was hard to watch now because I felt sick to my stomach for the contestants involved. Watching these girls cry is not entertaining, especially considering the reason they are so distressed. I'm glad i watched you're perspective too because i thought i was going insane
@KPopwithKhadija4 ай бұрын
YES. You are not alone!!!! I totally support your decision to not watch the finale. I HAD to stop watching after that second elimination - I literally felt sick and unbelievably sad. I usually don't watch reality tv (or very dramatic shows) for this reason. I was already thinking about the finale, cuz it felt so dramatic & drawn out the first time I watched it, when I didn't know who any of the girls were. I was thinking I might need to skip through or watch on 2x speed or something for this reaction haha. Watching people in distress is NOT entertaining to me, either. It hurts... 😓

this whole process was absolutely disgusting and i hope we continue to hold HYBE and Geffen accountable for the amount of emotional and mental abuse these girls had to endure. Sure, they had an onsite psychologist and thats definitely a step in the right direction. But dragging these girls from their homes for what seems to be JUST a training program, then inviting new girls in (some with very little experience) to then compete in a SURVIVAL SHOW broadcast to EVERYONE around the world without their knowledge - despicable. All they wanted was drama, viewership and attention. These girls had no idea what they were signing up for and for some reason this isn't a big deal to the wider public? Most of these girls weren't ready to endure any of this, the companies KNEW this, and proceeded to put them through the most intense situations they've ever had to process. Not to mention most of them are like 16,17, 18 hello???? I really need this to be blown up BIG bc if this is how a global group is being treated, can you IMAGINE what korean idols have had to go through? especially idols made through survival programs. I love Katseye and i hope they succeed and prosper, but hybe x geffen need to TRULY and PROPERLY held accountable for what these trainees went through.

Yay 3 episodes recap in one video! Glad u r binge watching so I can share more thoughts. 😅 Told you the show is an emotional rollercoaster! Ep 6 really did make me sick. The producers of the show (both the survival and the nextflix show) really brought the drama without seemingly much concern for the girls' mental well-being. And they really did put Manon in direct line of fire with the scenes they chose to put in the show - her saying she would skip practice, her not showing up for practice and the therapy session without proper explanation that she had covid at one point. I'm sure there are plenty of bonding scenes between her and the other Katseye members which they could have added but chose not to. There's more but I'll wait till you release the next episodes recaps. It also surprised me that 9 of the girls (I think it was) wanted Samara in their group. Seems like she had a good relationship with the other girls plus she is extremely talented. Makes me wonder if some of the things which were circulating about her were true or not (I didn't see the likes so I don't know 🤷♀️). Also, this show made me have so much respect for Lexie. Btw, I think Manon is now one of my biases! She has had a huge transformarion in her performances since debuting and she really has that star quality. Lara, Sophia and Manon did get a lot of hate bcos of the drama in the show. Lara even made a Tiktok video/skit addressing a hate comment directed at her. But I'm glad to see the girls have a really strong bond now and they've moved past all of that.

Yeahhhhh I'm glad I'm binge-watching, too. I couldn't imagine waiting like a whole week for another episode haha. And yes, I do feel like their concern for the girls' well-being was GONE at this point. Maybe not all the producers, but definitely the ones who were calling the shots when it came to the surivival show... who are different from the staff who were with the girls the whole year. I think that's why you can see some of the staff being just as emotionally affected at that elimination. Oof. So sad!

This is the thing. I love the formation of Katseye, I think they work really good together and it shows they've grown so much more since Dream Academy. However, as of the first and second missions, Manon should have been eliminated based on her performance. On the other hand, part of being an Idol is the pull that you have with people, and it is also a skill that Manon clearly has.
@KPopwithKhadija4 ай бұрын
I think she did really well in Mission 2. I liked her Mission 2 performance better than Mission 3!! haha. But yeah, the fan aspect is a big part of being an idol and if she wasn't safe from the missions themselves, I think the execs would keep her because of 1) her fan appeal and 2) her ability to learn & grow, which she WAS showing.

I’ve been a fan since the announcement was released about dream academy. During the start I thought it was really weird how we were voting but didn’t know how they treated people or even more about their personalities. I was really excited to watch the girls process in the documentary but I got hesitant on watching. After seeing SO much hate on TikTok just scrolling and even on their own posts made me not want to watch it. I pulled through and watched it. And definitely didn’t understand why people were so upset?? Did we watch the same series or are you just commenting hate to follow the crowd? Anyways on my takes for the girls. KATSEYE we have now are ALL girls I voted for and I hoped for in the lineup. I also wanna say real quick I’m around Megan/Laras age. Putting myself and my younger self in their shoes in the best way possible. In the issues I don’t think anything was only right or only wrong. Adela was a mother figure to many of the girls. She worked VERY hard and you could see the girls were extremely surprised and upset she was eliminated. Regarding her and Manon idk much and honestly idk how to describe how I think about her rn. Not like I hate her tho definitely. The drama between Manon, Sophia, and Lara was sooo weird to me. I was expecting sooo much worse. If I put myself in the one of the other girls shoes I would also be pretty upset she was “breezing” by (not like she didn’t put hard work in at all she did) not showing up for practices even when not sick. I honestly think that was a cultural difference. But after a couple weeks or even a month there shouldn’t be excuses for not putting the same work in. But putting myself in Manon shoes I feel even more understanding? I’m kinda like Manon. Very introverted and if I was surrounded by all these talented girls and had zero training I’d already feel like I was eliminated or last place. But tbh I don’t think ppl should be even including themselves in the girls stuff. I feel like the fans are trying to be supportive of Manon but only making things worse? Why are they acting like they were Manon and being mad for her? Why did I see so many negative clips from the documentary about the girls being “mean girls” and not the positive clips? I wanna say more but you haven’t watched the last two episodes lmao. Just wanna say that the hate is stupid and the girls have obviously made up. It was two-four years ago. Like I even saw a comment say that Manon was faking when she was smiling? Like do you know her? (Ngl I feel like my comment is everywhere cuz my thoughts are rn lmao) Anyways sorry for the comment dump 😭🙏🏻

Hehe thanks for sharing!! The comment dump is exactly what I want - to hear your thoughts!! People are definitely taking this small amount of highly-edited footage too seriously, which is what the internet does, I guess. But I agree, I can understand everyone's feelings in this series.

survival shows is always like this. XG documentary is also the same. eliminations are cruel and sometimes members need to choose 4 from all others in that too. it's just drama. you need drama if you make documentary. you can't even cry alone. The industry after debuting is more cruel.
@KPopwithKhadija4 ай бұрын
This is very true, I felt the same watching XTRA XTRA. The difference there is I kind of felt like from Day 1, Simon was really serious about giving those girls a tough skin. He did make it really challenging from the very beginning and the girls all knew what to expect - it was ALWAYS a competition, even when it was friendly. Here, I feel like they went OUT OF THEIR WAY to make the experience really supportive & collaborative & focused on building strong relationships between the girls, then in the last months they sprung the survival show element on them AND really pushed the drama to get these kinds of reactions from them. It just feels... extra cruel to me, even as someone who is used to watching these kinds of reality/survival series.
@FEARNOTxSTAY4 ай бұрын
@@KPopwithKhadija yeah, they made it extra cruel. Simon made them feel the competitiveness from the start. So the girls knew what would happen and they didn't overly attached to anyone. And no one joined in the middle of the program too. But here, they could have done this after gathering all 20. that could've prevented all this. But there is no point stressing over this. they debuted and they are like a family now. The fandom is a mess because of this.

I watched this doc EXPECTING it was a victory lap for the final line-up, and boy I was wrong. It feels so odd watching this doc KNOWING the final members. I started to root for girls that did not make it and made me feel off about members that did make it. idk it's so odd watching this by now, when the show is over and the group literally debuted already.
@KPopwithKhadija4 ай бұрын
RIGHT? It's so interesting! But I'm into it. I'm glad we got to know the other girls better and root for them - I want them all to be successful in whatever they have next. And even the girls in KATSEYE, it's interesting to see a more realistic, less polished view of them than I'm used to with k-pop idols. They're human, and that is interesting to see.

@@KPopwithKhadija oh yes, I ate all the episodes in one day hahaha I mean with surrvival groups we can see most of their actions beyond the stages, and it seems that DA lacked that part that can change for good or bad the votes. But kudos for staying so raw with the edit.

why did you blur the faces of the girls for like a moment?
@KPopwithKhadija3 ай бұрын
Copyright! This was a longer clip - if I keep the clips short, it's usually okay but when the clips are too long, it gets flagged for copyright & the video gets blocked. I didn't want to cut that scene though, so I added the blur to prevent the content identifier from picking it up.
