Alex KOd jamal hill (ranked #3) Jan Blachowicz is ranked #4 and hasn’t fought since he lost to Alex. Oezdemir (ranked #6) is fighting in November against Ulberg (ranked #11) Krylov (ranked #7) is fighting in November as well. So, Khalil rountree( ranked #8) who’s on a 6 fight win streak is the only one available in the top 8 for Alex to fight.

Ankalaev vs Rakic was announced August 3rd and fights aren't announced the moment a contract is signed so that fight was negotiated and signed off on at least 1-2 weeks prior to the announcement. Which means Ankalaev was already looking for a fight/in negotiations with Rakic during the month of August. So, no, Aknalaev wasn't "next". His last fight was in January and he chose to sign a contract with Rakic only a few weeks after perierra KOd Jiri.
