Awesome!! We home school our 7 year old and he loves Khan. He is reading at a 7th grade level and is advanced in every area. He conducts his own experiments all the time using scientific method and knows the entire Periodic Table as a 2nd grader. This is the future of quality education!

Khan Academy only has one instructor: Salman Kahn. But Khan Academy is Salman+Google which is BIGGER then the school system. Also, like Kahn said, many teachers in the school system are assinging their students to watch his video at home as homework. In class, they go over problems by interacting with the teacher which you can't get by just watching the videos. Salman acknowledges that this is far more effective then just watching the videos.

I am currently working towards an engineering degree and even after I graduate my employeer will still be training me for six more years. The future of education is apprenticeship because civilization is advancing far faster than the degree. The point of a degree now is to prove self-control and reliability.

The true beauty of this new proposed system is reputation networks. Not only will you be learning at your own pace and pursuing your own interests, employers would be able to get a better sense of why you study what you study and whether you would bring value to their organization.

To be honest with you, school is just a waste of time in general! The tests that they give out make you cram information into you brain in a very short amount of time. And then after the test you forget all of the info that was on it and that you “learned”. The same thing goes for the final exams too! And then homework is even worse, were they don’t even let you have your own free time to be creative. And the teachers themselves are not even motivated to work and just hand out random shit. But this website Khan Academy, is truly amazing and something I know I can use whenever. I can finally focus on something that is college level material combined with something I have a passion for like Astronomy, Astro-Physics, Physics, Chemistry, Calculus, Trigonometry, Geometry, and more! It is truly a Website that will go down in history.

It is more then just a 3d printer that I was talking about, but a 3d printer that can reprint it self and would cost well under $500. Cheap enough where everyone can has one and there is no need to buy shoes, you just print them. This is not just decentralized manufacturing, but at home, labor free manufacturing. Currently, it is limited in both detail and materials, but even in the next 20 years high quality multi-material cheap 3D printing, and soon after metal 3D printing (SpaceX has it now).

The problem with tripling teachers salaries is that a lot of current teachers aren't worth that much. If terminating bad teachers and giving raises to teachers who performed better was easy then many problems with our education system would disappear quickly.

It isn't that simple. South Korea has one culture that focuses on Confucian thought and holds a high regard for education and for authority. While they test very well because their discipline and drilling is so extraordinary they lack the flexibility, creativity and innovation that other education systems are capable of producing. I am an ESL teacher and I can not stress how difficult it is to get a student used to an Asian education system to write critical analysis of anything.

We would have more happy people too if they were not choosing a salary instead of an education....but all my respect to Khan..cya

well so does he. but there is much more to reforming our education system than just learning online. Actually, there are several different versions of 3d metal "printing" is use. But you seem to be missing the point. Even if everyone had a "replicator" in their house, who teaches them to use it? Or create new designs? A "self-taught" person will educate themselves, in order to create something new. Otherwise, most will just select options from a "menu" of objects to make. Knowlege IS power! Only you can decide what interests you. And learning something new makes you more powerful.

At my uni they have so many lecture halls. Can you imagine how much space it takes to build one of those? and after 2 hours, that information that was given in the lecture is no longer available. All it really takes is one person with a video editing software to make an a grade replica in their PC w/o a lecture hall, and they can put it on the web to be accessed by anyone at any time. I find it disturbing how we still try to stick this this dried up model of throwing money only to get a barely satisfactory level of education when one could simply go to a free website like kahn academy and get this lessons in the same course at a significantly higher quality. One thing is for sure, the education system is being run by crooks.

Both work with numbers, or the assigning of fixed points 2 instances in space time. When every nanometer in space time is accounted and every energy field in the universe is plotted out, is it still considered a dynamical system, or a dead one?

The biggest problem with unions is that they are anti-competition/anti-innovation. If a teacher improves performance but has only been at the school for a year, it doesn't matter. The bad teachers with underperforming students that have been there for years will still make more money. Unions champion seniority-based pay.

Actually I would say 3d printing is way below improved education. The impact on society of current model of schooling is extremely powerful and to our detriment. Decentralized (not even more efficient and certainly limited) manufacturing is neat, but nowhere near. It would be cool to make yourself new running shoes in the local printshop, rapid prototyping is also great (but this is in fact 20th century 3d printers) but this is it.

The problem is less with unions in general, which can and should be allowed, than laws that force membership in unions and public employee unions, which are paying money to the campaigns of the politicians that are supposed to represent the taxpayers in the negotiations. Public employee unions in the states end up becoming functionally money laundering schemes for political parties to funnel taxpayer money back to their own campaigns.

@Censorededs3 жыл бұрын
Education is and always has been a political issue -- how do you fund peoples education? Should it be private or public? If it's public, how do you hold local government accountable for that education? If it's private, how do you hold them accountable for covering curriculum? You're also watching ReasonTV which is a political organization, geared towards Libertarianism and free market principles. For Nick, this encapsulates the failure and the outdated modes of education that most public schools, charters, and even private organizations utilize. It's that sense of innovation and wonder that isn't possible within a bureaucratic scheme that Libertarians use to justify their ideas of free market, even within education.

You seem like a well meaning and thoughtful individual, but don't fall for the straw-man argument that any significant number of people want to ban all unions. No one is seriously asking for that. The problem has almost always been, even at the turn of the 20th century, government intervention in disputes between unions and business owners. Back then, the cops beat down strikers. Now, the government is preventing people who don't want to be in the union from getting work.

Nick tried so hard to get Salman to poo-poo public schools! I though Nick was going to put him in a headlock and force him to do it. Nick has drank too much neocon Kool-Aid. My kid is in a great public school and Salman is right: public schools are changing faster then most people realize -but a lot of it is up to the kids and the parents to take advantage of. Like my kid uses a netbook in all classes with her texts in pdf, most kids don't.
