Sal Khan is very very smart. Truly an academic genius. He can teach math from elementary school level to AP levels and some college math courses, chemistry from middle school level to college general chemistry level, finance from Wall Street fundamentals to everyday life financial markets, and many many more things. He is such a great explainer and note taker. I am so grateful that he is a man who makes academics so much easier to learn

I like his take on how kids learn at their own pace, and how indirectly, it proves that labelling kids as "slow" or "gifted" is a silly thing to do. It's all a coincidence of time. We grow and develop at different times, we have different ways of learning etc...

I appreciate your point you're trying to make, but all universities I know of provide free tutoring, office hours, and TAs. If at any point during those two weeks you struggle learning to bicycle, there are several resources to exhaust before you can truly say you tried your best to learn how to ride it in those two weeks.

The solution isn't outside the system. As he said, this creates a time saver. It saves teachers the time of lecturing, of making/grading quizzes, of trying to teach 30 students a complicated idea in under an hour and then sending them home to (hopefully) practice it with competency. Because students can come to class with the tools already in their arsenal, teachers can then use the time together to use that knowledge dynamically and creatively. That includes rocket building, experiments, problem solving, collaboration, discussion, service..the possibilities are really endless. If this could become available in a way that teachers can personalize and take ownership of, I would use it tomorrow. But I teach World Language, so his website is not for me. I can either use my own rudimentary version of that website, or use other teaching methods.

The system is also designed to free parents up so they can work etc. Yet to be discovered, though alluded to here, is the power of peer teaching. Over 100 years ago there was a school with one teacher, 10 senior students learning from the teacher who also each taught 10 other students, who then each taught 10 other students. Each student was learning enough to be able to actually teach the subject which is very deep learning. When this happen, in concert with this type of video resourcing, the earth will change even further.

Peter Howie Good idea but needs monitoring. Peer teaching in victorian uk schools was unsuccessful as wrong ideas got transmitted and were never challenged. Properly trained teachers use learning psychology whereas pupil peers do not. Teaching assistants in some uk schools can fulfil this role. Parents teach part-time in subjects they barely know themselves. Fine as long as proper teachers still tackle the more difficult stuff and are available to fix problems.

yes it is outside of a system cause you only do not need schools/ teachers but mentors who can help you but not to dictate what to learn - for that you just do some tests do discover what one is good at & enjoys at the same time

This is pretty awesome. I have been teaching in various capacities here in Hong Kong. The Swiss cheese holes missing link analogy couldn't be more appropriate for most people in Hong Kong. Teaching them computer skills is especially painful when they have not mastered drag and drop; humanized ways of labelling files..etc. Worst of all, the education here rendered them not to question. Most stumble on through without filling the gaps, and the frustration builds for both the teachers and the students. When asked to go back and master those fundamentals, how ever simple and crucial they might be, they are reluctant, and think that it isn't necessary.

I've been studying mathematics on Khan Academy. I haven't had a math class since my junior year of high school (going on 7 years ago), and I'm really rusty on a lot of things, including some things that most educated people would consider fairly basic. It's really nice to be able to relearn those things that I haven't used in a long time (such as multiplying two multiple-digit numbers, which I rely on a calculator for) and some things that I actually never learned in school (such as tricks for determining divisibility by a few 1-digit numbers). I never feel like I'm being judged for having to relearn some of those elementary aspects of math and I'm even given points as a reward for watching those videos and doing challenges related to them. Since I spend time with a community of people who make computer games (some as a job, some as a hobby), I know some people whose math knowledge goes into graduate-level calculus which goes _way_ over my head. You have my word, internets, that I will keep studying until I understand those kinds of subjects and I will keep going even beyond that. With Khan Academy, MOOCs, and all other sorts of open education resources, the barrier to education is lower than it ever has been in the history of civilization. Viva la educación!

He changes the entire way of learning. He made a greater contribution than Confucius on education. The modern issues about teaching are inequality of teacher distribution and only can focus on the whole class. The future Salman Khan talking about let us can focus on every individual student and give them equal teaching resources. and on some level minimize the resource we invest on teaching and even get greater return. Salman Kham will be remembered as long as the history goes.

Sal talked about it early int he video. It basically means having the lectures at home, and the "homework" in the classroom. A teacher was having students watch Sal's videos at home, and then do problems in the classroom. Which is a great idea because it means the teacher can be there with the students as they solve problems. So the students can quickly get feedback on what they got right, and what they need to work on.

I think the one thing no one talks about is the concentrated effort to build intuition into every topic. When I was at school, I couldn't understand a word of vector dot product (like most others) and then I stumbled upon the dot product video. Within ten minutes I understood what had confounded me for ten years. I think thats the greatest strength of Sal's videos. Keep it simple and people will get it. He never jargonizes anything

I found Khan Academy about a year ago and I've fallen in love with the site! Sal is such a great teacher and his videos have motivated me to jump back into college. I watch his videos everyday and study as many math sections as possible in order to review for the calculus courses in my upcoming semester. The site has helped me identify my deficiencies in algebra and trigonometry that have led to my previous failures in college; simple rules that I forgot as far back as 5th grade!

I am so, so thankful for the website. I am using it to help me study for the GAMSAT (medicine entry exam in Aus & elsewhere) but am super impressed by the potential implications for young students. I currently work with youth who have a disability and may struggle in some areas of learning -> this site could be a total blessing for them. I love the idea of increasing teacher contact time. I also really like the idea that this could potentially revolutionise the way that people in developing countries are taught, with access to some really amazing teachers and supports across the globe, for free (provided they have access to a computer with internet!). I’m in college rn and every Tuesday and Thursday, I go to two Math classes and just listen and jot down notes but not actually take in what they’re saying. It’s almost like they’re expecting all their students to be geniuses and to understand what they’re teaching. We’re expected to automatically understand on the first try, and there’s no going back. Once they teach a concept, then on to the next. However, I’m glad Khan Academy exists because now I can go to his videos and learn the same subject I was just “taught” in a much easier way. I can even pause the video or go back if I need to. For me, I want to be a teacher, but it also helps to make sure that (one) your lessons/lectures can be understood, and (two) you are going at a pace that is reasonable and helpful to each student. It sucks that a man who is using technology and only his voice can be a better teacher than those who are face to face with their students. You would expect more communication, and for those who are teaching secondary and primary, you would expect that their teachers would know of their students are struggling. As a future teacher, I will try to make sure my students understand, and if I need to reteach, I will because it benefits them. I don’t want them to go on to the next grade level knowing nothing of what I taught. Also as a teacher, I will encourage my students to use other sources like Khan Academy if they need to understand the lesson more. Every student learns in a different way and some need multiple perspectives to finally grasp a concept. Man sorry I ranted, but I’m just tired of teachers teaching a lesson but not really teaching their students.

Watching this video almost 8 years later has really given me an appreciation for much of a visionary Salman Khan was/is. As Salman predicted videos are being used today in classrooms as a substitute for classic lecture style learning environments. This, as Salman predicted, has this has enabled teachers to direct more of their time to help students who struggle which in the past was not possible. Internet videos have allowed students (and people in general) to use the internet as an extension of their own brain. As a student over the past decade, internet videos have always been available when I did not understand something that was talk in class. These videos have allowed me to constantly revisit them giving me the ability to relearn older material when I was ready to pay attention. As a future educator, I plan to incorporate internet videos into my classroom environment. Firstly, is a teacher watches some videos on the topic they are trying to present it allows to adjust their instructional plan based on a carefully curated and edited version of it; this allows the teacher to improve their teaching habits. Secondly, I plan on giving students (whenever possible) analogous videos to the lesson they are being taught; this allows students to have little perfect lessons whenever they need a reminder. Whenever there might not be a video available I may make my own videos for the students to refer too. It seems to me that videos have an essential part of the classroom and educators who do not consider using these videos are making their jobs harder.

I have to say, while I'm done with schooling I would love to have used Khan Academy at least as a help if not as an entire system to educate myself. I can only imagine this system as being more succinct, without teacher error (which happen more often as you move on to advanced topics), and more interesting as you basically can decide over a weekend where you don't have much to do to literally race through as much of the curriculum as possible. I think calling 10 straight correct answer mastery is a bit of a problem. It seems to me you'd need a bit more than that. Looking at Khan Academy's youtube channel I'm glad to see they are still churning out new educational material.

This is spot on. Psychology teaches us that people are more likely to do something if they are rewarded for it. This is what i personally think the main reason for many people disliking school. Its basicly "go here, learn this, now go home". This is also speculated to be the main source of "video game addiction", as the players gain a false sense of accomplishment. Applying the same formula to education will incite the students to study more / actually study on their own.

I agree with a lot of this. It's so much more helpful when the whole class is working together. I'm in the 12th grade pre-req to calculus at school, and I love that my classmates and I discuss the math and teach each other alongside the teacher. It's a much more friendly atmosphere and it really does help.

Sal might be my favorite person on planet Earth. That voice brings so much nostalgic comfort. Some random guy I had never heard of or seen before took so much time to explain concepts that I had knowledge gaps in. I received my bachelors degree in Computer Science without fully understamding what Calculus and Differential Equations were for, though I could solve the problems. When I was going for my masters in Comp Sci - Machine Learning, Sal helped me fill in a lot of gaps that I had developed over the course of my education. I can't thank this guy enough.

If I remember correctly, something like 0.5% of the world's population (or some percentage like that) is related to Genghis Khan. I think I saw that in an ad for History Channel on TV.

The most amazing part about Khan Academy's vision is its sheer simplicity. We just have so many preconceived notions about how education should work that sometimes we really never open our eyes to common sense. I hope this dream becomes a reality by the time my kids are in school, iA :)

This is the exact same method I used when learning how to play the guitar, really just dissecting each new concept and years later it became my profession. Growing up, I always felt that the education system that I was functioning under lacked engagement with it's subjects, which to my reasoning hindered overall fundamental development. William Ogburn coined the term "cultural lag", stating that a group's non-material culture lags behind it's ever-changing technology. We must adapt faster.

I'm a junior in high school and I have to say I benefit more from online personal video for algebra 2 than I do from my own teachers lectures because it is a lot easier to learn at your own pace and being able to just watch the video over again if I didn't understand something and I feel more relaxed allowing me to understand quicker.

Thank you so much! I came across this from an ELL Webpage, and the video's are helping so much!! It's nice to have some backup, as an ELL teacher I'm constantly correcting students, and I even get tired of hearing myself talk so it's a great break for the kids!!!
