These 13 colonies were much more British in culture, as Edmund Burke described, than the bulk of the British Empire; and that is part of why we engaged in armed resistance to the throne and their government in London; it really was the antics of London that did it. Whereas all of the other colonies not mostly settled by British, but having a large native population that was subjugated, these would put up with mistreatment, they began to treat us like them- and the result was a civil war and a world war that England couldn't possibly win in the end. They did well just holding on to the rest of the areas that they did hold on to, however, all things considered.
