I've noticed my cottontails getting more comfortable with me by the year, never used to see them in our fenced portion and now the juvenilles spend most of their time in the fence. Sneaking around. The adults don't run away from me unless I get within 10 feet, they used to dart off the minute they saw me.

In case you didn't know. If it rains really hard and the nest gets full of water, the babies will actually float on their backs and keep their mouths above the water line in order to breath. Pretty cool.

That bunny has trust in you a full100% to let you get that close to her while she’s feeding the babies. I would think that is the same bunny that uses your garden as her baby bunny hole. She knows you won’t harm them and you have an abundance of food for them. Great bunny videos!

I agree! I just found a rabbit's nest 3 days ago and from this video, they look to be about a week old or so. I have two dogs and I live in the city but for some reason she picked my yard. My neighbor has been in their house 10x longer than me and said they've never had a nest let alone seen a rabbit in their yard. This gentleman is a bunny angel and I'm sure there are plenty more nests still for him to watch over 💞💞😇😇

This happened to me this year too! I have a very, very dense garden and I didn't even notice they were there until they were over a week old! They gnawed some of my vegetables, but I don't mind. They're too cute to be mad at! I just feel bad that I watered them all week! They're about a month old now and seem very healthy. :)

I love it. That bunny is not afraid of you because it was probably one of the babies that you found a year and a half ago, and now it has grown up, remembers you coming around when it was just a baby and totally feels that you are welcome in her eyes around her babies. I mean like you said wild bunnies there is no way they would be this calm around you normally they would run away and try to return at night. I totally think that is one of the little ones you saved from the rain/storm, and protected from the lawn guys etc. Nice work! ;)

@SimplyRay I believe bunnies can live up to 10 years in captivity when taken good care of. I know mine lived 9 years. I don't know how long they usually survive in the wild, but as long as no predator comes and gets them and food is abundant, they can survive longer than just 2-3 years.

Yep, people just fill in the holes without even thinking about how they’re actually attempting to suffocate/starve an animal. When I was a kid, my dad started filling in a hole, and I was like “you’re gonna trap it in there??? To starve???” And he was like. Oh. Huh. And he removed the dirt he put there. We rescued a wild Eastern Cottontail baby from our back yard. She was all alone, and so tiny I fed her with an eyedropper in the beginning. We live out in the woods, with rattlesnakes, hawks, eagles, bobcats, and coyotes. I knew she wouldn't live long in the wild. She is now going on 10 months old, has an entire Florida Room to play in, is litter trained, and is at home with my 6 parrots. 😂 I questioned every day if I had done the right thing---until I learned a pack of wild coyotes had gone through our neighborhood preserve. I haven't seen a single wild rabbit since. I think they decimated the rabbit population.😢 I live in Florida, where building expansion is wiping out native habitat. It is so sad. Thank you for posting this wonderful video. I grow vegetables in my garden too---but no nesting rabbits so far.

You did the right thing either way. People are crazy to think an animal who barely lives a year in the wild is harmed when someone takes them in. It's a kindness. I take the juvenilles in sometimes just for a little while to help them get bigger before being on their own. Mainly the ones I find that just sit there instead of staying hidden or running away.

@@Recoveringred Yes, I do! She will be four years old in June, and she now has a companion rabbit named Cleopatra (a mini Rex). Catcher (the wild rabbit) is very jealous over me and sometimes gets annoyed with Cleopatra, but they DO play together. I just have to be careful and give Catcher plenty of alone time with me. She was the only rabbit for three years and now she doesn’t want to share me with a rival sister, lol. They are both happy and healthy and very active. It makes me happy to know that Catcher has already outlived her life expectancy by two years. 🙂

I got rabbits eating my garden but im just growing the plants to practice growing and collecting seeds I just feed anything i grow to the animals because its usually in bad condition but if that garden was my food supply I wouldnt think twice about shooting them.

Rain moving in so I've constructed a quick tent over the planter with openings at both ends. Very helpful that you provided a narrative with timing. I'm less worried about scaring mother off as insuring she has access.

My mom found a nest under her plant, and she assumed it was a birds nest. I decided to give it a closer look and found fur and even little whiskers. I knew it had to be from a rabbit and she thought I was crazy, but I'm not. Loved this video, thank you for sharing! We have some wild bunnies in our neighborhood, and coyotes but I have never seen the coyotes come into our yard so hopefully the bunnies will continue to nest here!

It's a privilege when an animal trusts you. We found a nest in our irises yesterday. I am staying awa6 but monitor now throughout the day from the house. We have some adult bunnies on our 6 acres and a couple don't get spooked by me when out in the yard. I dont think I'll be able to do what you did though. Loved the video.

It does have a huge impact on their behavior as adults when you visit them/pet them in the nest. Especially once their eyes are open. They will be scared the first time and then after that they enjoy it and that has a lasting impact on how they see you.

Rabbits just love raised garden beds. We've had many litters born over the years in our garden (which is about 2 feet off the ground); and once, we even had a litter born into a leaf mulch and grass compost heap. Sometimes you don't even know there was a nest until you find it empty, months later. Also, I think the mother tolerates you because she's gotten used to humans and has learned that cats and other predators tend to avoid areas that people frequent a lot. A couple years ago, a rabbit and her babies (~25 days old) got attacked by a raven in my yard. The bird got one of the babies, and the mother took off with 2 more, but she left behind a 4th who was injured in the attack (it didn't appear that severe, but they're delicate, so who knows what internal damage was done?). We were waiting for her to come back, but she abandoned it to the bird, and so we tried to help it. Unfortunately, even with the right care (goat milk and a bit of heavy cream fed through a dropper), and eventually vegetables and grasses, the bunny still died after a couple weeks. That's pretty typical apparently...even without the injury, only 10% of rabbit kittens that young make it under human care. If they are weaned, they can generally make it on their own; if not, they are HIGHLY dependent on their mother.

I don’t know if these are eastern cottontails but I have them in my yard and whenever I have seen babies in our garden or other areas of the yard it seems they feed at dawn and dusk. I’ve been hanging out with this bunny for over a year and she’s given birth a few times, just saw her making a nest in the garden again. It’s so cool to see. :)

Bunnies are really friendly. We have a pet one called Snuggles and he is so social and affectionate. He loves kale parsley and bananas! They are awesome to watch and examine.
