Wild Bunnies Found In My Garden

Found these Cotton Tail bunnies in my garden. There are six of them and are all fat and happy. They should be ready to move out in about 3 weeks.

We have tons of cotton tails in our area, Finding nests are common, but I know the mom is around because, during the evening, just like clockwork, she comes ripping through our backyard, straight to the nest. She's gotten so use to us being around that she'll come over for her nightly meal of kale and rabbit pellets. Too cute! Thanks for sharing

She notices the nest has been found and some times they assume they are dead, so the mom leaves them without knowing they're still alive Don't move them or disturb their nest too much

I live in Ohio on an acre of land and I also find them every year. They're super cute and I always cover their nests with a chair or box so I can mow around them until they're grown and the nest is empty. Just put something over their nest so the mother can still get to them and in a few weeks they'll be gone. The mom will keep coming back at night. They avoid contact with their young during the day so they don't attract predators.

Well, I appreciate your comment and understand your position. My post didn't really have anything to do with food or veganism. My neighbor raises chickens and sells eggs, I get fresh eggs every week. I eat meat once or twice a week. I do value life but also understand that humans are omnivorous and there are nutritional benefits to eating meat as a part of a balanced diet.

Awwwww, such a blessing for this to show up in my feed today of all days. 3 yrs ago a stray cat destroyed an eastern cottontail nest in my flower bed. We buried 4 bunnies but found one surviving baby in the very bottom of the nest. He stayed with us for a week before passing on to be with his siblings. We loved him so much, named him Bear and did our best to save him. Love and miss you, Bear!

So sweet of you to cover them in the rain. There was a nest of bunnies at my mom's house. Unfortunately we didn't know they were there and the neighbors cat killed them and put them on the front step. I felt bad about it but that's instinctive behavior and you really can't prevent it.

Thank you for researching the habits of wild rabbits. People get worried about “helping” wild animals and their babies, but these animals know what they’re doing. Like you said, they have a natural instinct to survive. If nesting their babies in the grass caused them to drown, they wouldn’t continue to nest them there 🙂 nature finds a way and is so smart. I just got a video of two young rabbits in my yard today. They are young but independent. Last month I got video of the parents in the neighbors yard. They didn't even leave the yard when we were watching them. They just stared at us. Guess they were wondering what we were doing in their yard. 😂

Awe! You did the right thing! I just discovered a nest yesterday in my garden bed, I was watering my vegetables when i noticed the baby bunnies! There are 3 of them (eyes open so they must be about a week old), but the mom didn't have them covered, just in a hole, so I put some grass clippings over them. They are so stinking cute. The mother is here all time in my back yard so I know she takes good care of them. But i worry about crows or other predators getting to them. This was a great video showing the right thing to do! Thank you for that

This was a really neat video! I've never seen them that small, and honestly, I would not have known they were bunnies as they looked like rats. LOL! I was so scared when you showed them after the rain because I had thought they had all died stretched out like that. But how cool was it that their instinct kicked in and they were just surviving. They were adorable at 1 week old!! I loved that you captured at night and such to show when mommy came by. Super cool video.

We've had rabbits in our yard every year. Once their eyes open, they'll be out of the nest pretty fast. We had two under one of our fruit trees this year. We kept covering some of the holes in the raised beds (just starting to burrow, made a huge mess for a few days about a month ago) and they must have figured out it was quieter under our trees. We've also had them in grassy areas - you start seeing clumps of fur and lots of dry grass getting accumulated in a low spot. Now we just have to start protecting our seedlings (hardware cloth or chicken wire). All the new growth gets munched on... :(

Rabbits usually build their nests in locations like that hole in the ground so I bet they’ve evolved with the instinct to deal with conditions they are exposed to because of their location

I found bunnies on my property. I was weedeating and found them I removed the high grass from their burrow so I had to put something out for them to act as the tall grass. So when rain came down the bunnies would become saturated from me removing their protective barrier. So I set up a fold up table above them. Put a planet on it. So it would blow away.. that kept the nest dry and flying predictors from spotting them and picking them off, one at a time. I watched as they matures and hopped around under the protection of my folding table. They were so adorable. I left some goodies for them too, as they got bigger and before they departed the nest.

Excellent video of wildlife right in your backyard. A few weeks ago, on a Saturday mama rabbit dug a hole and next day gave birth to five kits only a few meters away from our patio door. Tuesday it rained a lot during the day and I covered them with an empty flower pot. Then,I removed the pot and checked on the kits. They were all fine. I covered them back with grass and fur. Wednesday morning at 6am, I see mama rabbit cleaning herself, then covering back the nest with grass and her fur. At 10am, out of curiosity, I checked again on the kits. Although the nest was well covered with grass, the kits were all gone. They were only 4 days old with no fur and eyes still closed. I have no idea what happened to them, as I did not have a camera to watch over the nest. Really sad.

the mother will not abandon her babies if u handle them. In fact i handled a bunch of baby bunnies in my yard and then noticed the mother at the other end of the yard watching me. i went in the house and watched out a window to see what she would do. She stayed watching the nest from a safe distance until night and as soon as it got dark she moved them 1 by 1 to another nest site. As long as she can smell them, she wont ever abandon them.

Just put a post and sign there to let the gardeners know the bunnies are there. Or maybe several smaller posts with simple string around it so the mommy can come and go, and a sign on it. Very simple remedy. : )
