Amazing information here 😊 When the rain fill up the bucket, do you have to adjust the nutrients again? Also when you fill up with nutrients, are you going to the maximum or you keep a small gap from the top of the bucket? Thank you for sharing 🙂

Is this like a Kratky system but with air circulation?
@dasledogg644 жыл бұрын
Awesome! Thank you for sharing. I'd this were Kratky, how far up would you fill your bucket, like how much space would you leave?
@KhangStarr4 жыл бұрын
when the plant is young, you can have the water level touches the bottom of the netcup. As the plant grows, it will drink water creating a gap. That gap will eventually get larger, that's where the air roots will be. Don't cover that level and your plant will be fine. If you refill, make sure to only go 1-2 inches above the line prior to refill or else you will kill the plant.

@mayankb4 жыл бұрын
How do you refill Khang? Some people say that once roots are exposed to air, they should not be drowned in water again since it distresses the plant. Do you top up every couple of days with nutrient water? or do you wait for water level to go down some?

Beautifully explained and simple grow system Khang! Is your solar power unit sensitive enough to pick up on grow lights and run that way? Have you a link to your source for that power unit? Up this way the way the pods are growing seems to suggest a benefit to the snow a couple weeks ago. Happy Gardening! -Bob...

Filling to the level of the net cup won't drown the roots? Doesn't it need air roots?
@Xn70004 жыл бұрын
That's what the air pump is for, it keeps the water aerated so the plant doesn't need a large mass of air roots like in a Kratky system.

Do you ever have problems with algae? It looks like there's some on top of the rockwool, wouldn't it spread down and eventually get into the water, suffocating the plant?
@KhangStarr4 жыл бұрын
I get the algae from the small system. After I placed it in the larger system, I cover the netcup, no more algae.

Your link to the air-pump is bad. It links to a 120 Volt air pump (not solar). Just thought you might want to know. Other than that, it's a brilliant idea/system.

Big mistake here - do not put the airstone up high like in the video, you want it all the way down in the bottom of the container so that the bubbles are able to aerate the water fully. I've been doing this for a few years, works great for Kang Kong / water spinach. In fact most plants will grow very well without an air pump, although with the solar air pump it does improve growth rate. There are a lot of outdoor hydroponics guides out there, it absolutely beats out soil growing. Plant growth is more than twice as fast, so for leafy greens etc. you can grow a single plant to produce as much as a soil plot would with multiple plants. I've never had any issues with algae, nor with my 5 gallons being black (heat) - the amount of water in there stays cool throughout the day even on a hot day. For nutrient I use the good ol powdered general hydroponics all purpose soil / hydroponic bag, a pound for about $10 will last for a couple of years over several hydro applications. I've used that same solar air pump and still have one, make sure to NEVER get it wet or let it get rained on. It will fail that way, as long as you keep the solar unit relatively dry you're all set.
