The more I listen to this rendition, the more I understand what Katia was going for. - a total cacophony of noise, after the orderly second movement, serving to highlight the subtlety of the anti-war movement Prokofiev wrote this under. I won't pretend it's my favourite rendition, but there is an artistic sensibility here that is not entirely overshadowed by the high tempo and inaccuracies.

I'm not saying it's a standout performance, or even a particularly good one - just that she had an idea about how it could work. You dare to describe this monster-display of sheer vulgarity as 'fabulous'? Well, sometimes we hear, in response to an outstanding performance, expressions such as "She really nailed it", or "Man - - she killed it!" Let's go with those last three words, not in the complimentary sense, but in the literal sense. If there were any such thing as "obscenity in music". then this is it, folks!

I'd like to know why KZbin persists in presenting this atrocity. It certainly isn't 'instructive' in any sense, and it carries with it the possibility of creating a false impression for first-time listeners who'll think that this toxic 'delivery' is what the composer intended. There's only one thing good about this presentation. Her dress.

Brava? Fun? Are you crazy? This is a (thankfully) one-of-a-kind act of murder in music. To even THINK of this piece being done this way would be obscene. But to actually dare to subject the hapless listener/viewer to such a musical massacre is inexcusable. Does she imbecilically think that such a hyper-frenzied execution makes for an effective musical experience? Even a speed demon like Lang Lang wouldn't disgrace himself to THIS extent. For those first-time listeners who've been poisoned by exposure to this ghastly "interpretation", may I suggest that you seek an 'antidote' in the form of listening to performances by Horowitz, or Richter, or Pollini, or just about any pianist out there. And don't ever go near this video by Khatia again!

Personally I don't think this really does the precipitato justice. It's supposed to be suddenly explosive, but she doesn't leave enough room for the intensity to show in sudden bursts, its just constantly, and continuously, at maximum intensity the entire time through the piece. By all means you can enjoy this piece being played however you like, I'm all for a pianists personal interpretations! But to call it respecting of the original score would be wrong in my opinion.

many remarks here are so ridiculously old fashioned. An artist is telling you something new, and you tell him: this is not how we are used to it. Like Jean Cocteau said: An art critic is like a carpenter who looks at everything as if it were a chair. You show him a lamp, he says: it is a bad chair.
@garykrist2749
@garykrist2749 2 жыл бұрын
Well, this is better than previous versions from her that I've heard, in which she hits about half of the notes correctly. But your contention that playing this thing absurdly fast is some kind of new, revolutionary interpretation is just silly. She's not telling us anything new. She's telling us that she can play this piece really, really fast.
@elijaguy
@elijaguy 2 жыл бұрын
@@garykrist2749 I dont contest the validity of your criticism, yes, all is true. However she is also saying that there is a possibility of a message of loss of control beyond a dangerous threshold beyond a speed which can be controlled. Savagery. Most other great interpretations emphasize a fantastic level of control, notably Pollini, Gould, Richter, and many others. Some play near the threshold, like Horowitz, Martha, dear Martha, etc, as you all know well. There are so many great classical interpretations. You may not like Buniatishvili's suggestion, diabolic suggestion, perhaps, but it is legitimate to suggest. Unless you live under Stalin or Putin, BTW. Altogether we live in an era when there is very little space to say "something new", because everybody sits comfortably at home and listens and watches 50 performances of each peace, like in a morning cereal's supermarket shelf. This is a price we pay for the total technology of recording and duplicating. The once ubiquitous rarity has become a rare commodity. Even in my childhood a "new" interpretational suggestion would be something you would have to go some way to encounter, in a concert, or even in 45 vinyl records. I still remember the experience. Myself at a Martha or Rubinstein concert in the late 1960s, was a revelation, something of once in a long period, let's say, of a few years. Today they are all in a computer's keyboard distance. Nice but there is a price to pay for it.

And you are supposed to find it cool when someone like Katia plays so fast that you literally can no longer recognize a piece? Excellent interpretation? This must be your first exposure to this piece, her performance of which is so vile that Prokofiev himself wouldn't have recognized it. Khatia probably isn't even aware of how much she's disgraced herself here, because there are other videos of her playing (i.e. destroying) this poor piece in different locations. The massacres were similar in every case.

I beg to differ re 'not quite reaching Martha's level of power and precision': Martha sometimes plays/played 'insane' tempi, but she was/is always in control and had/has perfect tone projection, all qualities that Katia lacks, she will never reach Martha's transcendental level. Strangely enough, Martha thinks highly of her!
