I have watched documentary after documentary on these dogs. Even when they are older and are retired, they still have the drive, will and craving to work. Many of them retire to their handler and they say they still, years after retirement, some of them, the desire to work is so strong even up to old age death that they have to set up work scenarios, hide things for them to target, enrich them etc every single day at home as if they were still at work. Being a 1 and 1/2 years old, Rocky, seeing what I have seen, he would not mentally do well AT ALL. He NEEDS to work. He WANTS to work. If he does not, then they will retire him. They will not force him to continue. It will be up to Rocky but my bet is, Rocky will want to be back to work LONG before he is healed and able. That is the biggest problem they have when one gets injured.. keeping them on the healing path physically but more especially mentally while they are DETERMINED to be back at work. The worst time is when handler is suited up and leaves for work leaving K-9 officer at home during the healing process. Many agencies give the handler a leave for the duration of the K-9 healing so mentally the K-9 handles things and can heal physically. The emotion I have seen time and time again with this US Marshall giving updates with Rocky, you can tell every single time he is fighting back tears. I am willing to bet, the handler will be on paid leave until Rocky can return to work because clearly, Rocky is family to all of them. There is a You Tube video of a officer who got shot in the shoulder/arm. They bring the k-9 officer to visit him at the hospital. Going down the hall the K-9 was like ok whatever. The SECOND they bring him in his handlers room, K-9 ran to him and was trying to climb into bed with him. He was so relieved his dad/friend/partner was ok. There is a unbreakable bond for sure. Respect and love from both sides They would die for each other.

I think once he is better, he should get a medal. I think when he gets that medal, it should be apublic event. At that event, there should be a pet adoption event, and there should be several animal charity representatives there for anyone wishing to donate money. Otherwise, I would think people could pick the animal charity of their choice and donate in Rocky's name. There are so many animals in need right now...shelters and rescues are overflowing and in need of funds. But if you want to make a donation, there are organizations that purchase these dogs and donate them to LE agencies. There is also a charity that buys vests for K9's, but I can't remember the name. Although, I am not sure a vest would have made a difference in this situation. Kudos to the handler for not leaving Rocky's side. I hope Rocky is well enough to attend Deputy Vargas funeral.
