The Mitsubishi Ki-83 was a well kept secret in Japan during WW2. In fact very few Japanese even knew of its existence. When the Americans found the craft they were shocked and confused by it, and when they decided to test the craft, designed by Tomio Kubo the designer of the Ki-46 "Dinah", they were amazed at it performance. Even though it was a heavy fighter plane it performed on par with a lot of America's single engine fighter planes and out did their heavy fighters. Who knows what could've been had Japan been able to put this into production a year earlier.
