Like it. Well researched, well explained Past owner of a Hyundai Santa Fe that got a corrosion hole in the gas tank...poor craftsmanship that resulted in an action class lawsuit that force them to fix it. I still had to fight with the warranty representative to honor the claim. No more Hyundai or Kia for me ever.

Sheesh, that sounds horrible. What I’ve learned so far is that it always boils down to who’s at the top and how the company can rob Peter to pay Paul. Peter being consumers, and Paul being Investors.

A software update cannot fix that lack of engine immobilizer. I think Hyundai and Kia were being cheap, trying to reduce costs by omitting the immobilizer. As a result of them being stolen frequently, some insurance companies are refusing to insure them. This is a good reason to be a used one that doesn't have an immobilzer

You’re absolutely right. That’s exactly what happened. Which is why I called it an oversight because they didn’t expect it to be an issue. Turns out to be a $145M issue with residual loss for consumers.

The update isn't going to be much of a help if the perp still thinks they can steal it, as they'll break in just to find out if they can.

Thanks for this great piece, but am I the only person who keeps hearing Honda or maybe Honday...?

It’s both. Hyundai, parent company of Kia. Also, Honda gave Kia licenses to build their bikes back in the 60’s.

I want a Kia stinger gt V6 twin turbo, brembo brakes, what’s not to like?

I like the Stinger. You can probably get a good deal on one since it got discontinued. They don't have the missing immobilizer, so you should be good.

I have a Hyundai Sonata, and so does my niece, both of our engines blew up, hers at 35k mine at 120, Hyundai replaced them free, due to the lawsuit. I really want to like Hyundai, because ideally it’s the best bang for the buck. But I could not with a clear conscience recommend anyone buy one, it will cost you in the long run.

Used to be a big fan of the 2014 Optima & Sorento. Too bad their reliability and style went downhill after that.

I will never buy a Kia or Hyundai. They are trash. Plus auto insurance companies do not want to insurance them. Your insurance premium is higher if you own Kia or Hyundai.

Yep, blame the Kia Boys. They used to be dirt cheap to insure.
