That Kia is brutal, having to remove the entire intake manifold to change plugs! Awesome job Eric!

Most transverse mounted V6 engines require the intake to come off to change back plugs. Did it on my wife's 02 Sonata 2.7 and it was super easy. Few bolts and it comes off. Very simple.

Eric for the guy who complained about you not showing every nut, bolt and turn of the wrench. Just do an unedited video of you eating lunch, talking to customers on the phone as well as those dropping by, petting the dog, the wife telling you about her day, sweeping the floor, cleaning spills, sending parts back, driving to the parts store to return the wrong part, petting the other dog, and an outside shot of the bathroom door. How ever long that takes.

Sorry to comment on an older video, but this one just reminds me why I buy V-8, push rod engine trucks. There is something wrong with having to remove the intake to do a tuneup..lol
@JohnRodriguesPhotographer
@JohnRodriguesPhotographer 5 жыл бұрын
The reason these intakes are shaped the way they are it is part of the whole fuel economy small engine displacement culture we've created. Longer intake runs give you a little more torque. The velocity of the air in the logger just says travel creates momentum. Momentum translates in torque. The straighter the run is going into the piston also improves torque

You miss the Chevy Monza with a V6. That was a real party to change spark plugs on! You had to unbolt the motor mounts you jacket the motor to get to the plugs. Yeah that was real!

I have a 4 cylinder ... with 8 plugs, 4 of them in the back and harder to get to. Changing them in the next couple days when I feel like cursing at the engineers for limited accessibility! Just like when I changed the low/high beam bulbs the other day, had to remove the battery to do the driver's side -_-

It's not like you change the plugs every other tuneup, is it. In fact on most modern cars tuneups aren't very often at all.

You should know by now there is a small percentage of viewers who complain about anything and everything and give a thumbs down trying to make your life as miserable as their's. You have some of the best video's on Y-tube so let those viewers try to find anything better.....They won't find it. Keep on doing what you do, Eric. Some of the older Fords also had 2 different plug numbers in them for positive and negative firing cylinders. Took me a couple of years to find out why.

I'm planning a much longer trip than that when I can; I have two jobs I don't trust anyone around here to do and don't have the tools or knowledge/trust in self to do it myself. Valve lash adjustment is one. I'm not going to risk me fooling around in the top of my daily. And the CVT transmission has a shudder from the starter clutch; which requires either a full drain and refill and a burnishing procedure, but from the drain plug you can only get about 3-4 quarts at once, so it is suggested to change it 4 times with driving in between, then do the burnishing procedure. The Honda service writer didn't even know it had a starter clutch, called the starter clutch a torque converter, and many other things that showed he knew nothing about the car but was willing to talk with confidence as if he did. Not letting them touch it, even if it was free. If I had extra cash, I'd beg him to take me to a junkyard so we could rip a rear parcel tray out to replace mine, which is pitted and one of the speaker grilles is disintegrating; and maybe a spare set of wheels for winter tires for the upcoming season ;) If I had extra money, I'd be throwing it figuratively at Mr O to do the stuff I just can't or better said, shouldn't be doing :p

I learned the hard way not to trust aftermarket coil packs just a couple days ago. I had a coil pack go bad on my 2007 Camry at about 130,000 miles. I replaced it with an aftermarket model, which worked well for a while. But then it just went bad at 166,000 miles! To make things worse, the aftermarket boot stuck to the spark plug on the bottom of the spark plug tube. Ugh! Thankfully it was on the front bank but it turned a 14 minute job into a 2 hour job just trying to fish out the rubber bits in the rain. A brand new OEM coil pack from my local dearler cost me about $12 more than the aftermarket part that went bad! Lesson learned! The other 5 OEM packs are still going strong.

Eric - Some really old physics - A spark works best when the negative electrode is the sharp one. This has been known ever since the days of the static electricity entertainment industry of old with the big rotary static generators. Between two identical sharp pointy electrodes the polarity does not matter but between a flat surface and a sharp point the breakdown is easier and you get a better spark when the sharp pointy electrode is negative. It's easier to spray electrons out from a sharp point than suck them into a sharp point.

Eric, I own the same car in this video. Had to remove the air intake twice. Once for spark plug and wire change and the 2nd time was the air intake had a broken inside with one of the air flaps broke inside the intake. It was running rich. I just dread having to remove the back bolts and putting them back on is just as bad if not harder.

why on gods earth did they design the Inlet manifold over the plugs and leads? the 2.4l 4 cylinder of the same year is a mitsubishi motor. Hyundai sure are tight when it comes to giving any technical repair information! 1000 bucks in labour to replace the valve stem seal on a 2.4 Sonata, can be done without taking off the head, good to have the right valve spring removal/installer tool! 5000 was a quote for the cost for a new ECU/PCM.. gotta love the customer service! just need to be sitting down when they tell you the cost.. both GM holden and ford will close their factory is australia this year and now we hear toyota is doing the same making way for Hyundai/Kia,with their long warranty period, to rein as it kinda already is...supreme.

I always enjoy watching these, one point on deep spark plug tubes. Rather than shop air to blow out, I'll use a powerful shop vac and modulate the extension tube to create a Venturi and get any junk out before removing plugs. I'll do it a second time after I loosen plugs to get other debris, just in case.

I just replaced the spark plugs and coils in a 2008 Santa Fe 3.3 with 135K on the clock and original plugs today and it took 2.5 hours, I used NGK plugs and OEM coils, I wasn't chancing using aftermarket that could die in a month after going through what it takes to get to them. Easy enough to change the front ones but getting to the back ones are a pain in the ass. Lucky for me Hyundai was kind enough to leave a bunch of bolts out/loose/stripped out and hoses disconnected when they had worked on the SUV before when my father in law owned it, What a bunch of hacks. This is why I have gone to working on them myself, it's a shame when a dealership mechanic doesn't give a crap enough to do it right. I have worked commercial HVAC for over 30 years and seen my fair share of hacks in my industry as well, I guess there are just people that don't care in every job type out there. Seems like there are very few out there anymore that really take pride in their work.

That's a good point about dedicated plug sockets. I've had a few problems with those, too. Once before I had a small part of the boot tear as I pulled it off the plug, and it took a few minutes before i noticed. I couldn't figure out why the plug socket wouldn't fit all the way on. Luckily enough I had a very deep straight 5/8" socket, and once I realized what happened it was easy.

Oh yeah or you get a little piece of dirt or something wedged ii=n there and the socket won't hit the flats. Been there too haha

Surprisingly Hyundai's used champion plugs from the factory. I changed the plugs in my wife's 02 Sonata awhile back and replaced it with the oe champion number in the owners manual. Car has 115k on it now. We live in Ohio, yet the car barely has a spec of rust on it anywhere. The wiper arms surface rust is the worst on the car. Bought it in January 2019 with 77k and it's been insanely reliable. Changed the timing belt at 93k in 2020 and was super easy and just plugs and wires and an IAC valve as they crack on the 2.7 engines very commonly. Everyone shits on Hyundai and Kia, but they are fantastic cars. Even back to the early 2000s. Nobody gave them a chance. I think the YF sonata(2002-2005) is a very aggressive yet elegant looking car. And they are super comfortable to drive. My wife wants a Tuscon but she won't give her sonata up she loves it so much. And she's driven newer Hyundai's but prefers her sonata. Been laid off since day one. Paid 3300$ out the door from a Kia dealer
