Kia Sorento / Santa Fe 2.4L ALTERNATOR REPLACEMENT how to remove replace

FYI: I replace the alternator from beneath in this video because for me that seems like the easier way of doing it. But I've heard you can do it fairly easy by removing the 3 bolts from power steering pump and doing it from up top too. Choose which method you feel comfortable with and good luck! :)
Quick basic instructions on how I remove/replace an alternator from a 2011 Kia Sorento with 2.4L engine. You can remove this alternator from the top as well, but I personally find it easier to do it this way.
this will also work on the Hyundai Santa Fe. I'm not sure on exactly what years though.

Just an fyi, since you had a hell of a time out the bottom i figured id try the top. Definately the way to go. Pulled ps pump and intake actuator, and belt. Jacked engine up and took top motor mount bolt off to get top alternator bolt. Had alternator out in 20 mins. Hope this helps people

I agree! I did it your way as I was doing this in my driveway and didn't want to mess with the cradle on the ground. Took me a bit longer than 20 min but, I got it out and replaced from the top.

How did you guys get the ps pump off? We can't get to the Las bolt that looks like it's behind the intake manifold.

I have unfortunately had the displeasure of doing this job twice. The first Time I did it like this and most other videos described, out the bottom and that is a major pain and also takes way longer to do. Removing the power steering pump and taking the alternator out the top is FOR SURE the way to do this Job! I found this out the second time around and I have to say I was extremely glad I did!

I just wanted to add a comment and thank you very much for creating this detailed video. Us DIY'ers owe a great debt to those like you who take the time to document and upload a complicated procedure like this. My Father In Law's retention pulley on the alternator failed and he shredded his serpentine into millions of tiny strands that embedded/wound themselves into the crankshaft, idler pulley and tensioner pulley. All in all, I got this done in 6 hours. Found this video and watched it numerous times and decided I could do it and save the $550 labor fee. The only things I ran into were there are 2 annoying plastic clips that are hiding up in the corners (that support the front splash shield) under the front bumper and it is easier to un-screw the side/wheel splash guards as it gives you more flex. The other thing is that I could not for the life if me get the A/C Compressor to tuck up behind the oil filter while the alternator was still attached. Instead it was much easier to just go ahead and unbolt the alternator to where it was 100% free and then push it up - this gave a ton of room to tuck the A/C compressor as before it was hitting the Alternator. However this was on a 2012 EX so I am not sure if there was a minor design change. Thank you again.

Fyi it is possible to get the alternator out the bottom without loosening the sub frame. You do need to loosen the top motor mount and jack the engine up on the oil pan to get the top alternator bolt out but it lifts easily. Once lifted you MUST stand the AC compressor vertical and twist it to get the lines to rotate with it towards the radiator. You need to shove it all the way over almost in front of the oil filter housing. It WILL go with patients. Then there will be a large enough space to bring the alternator down back first with the pully up. It slips right out. It took me 2.5 hrs start to finish. Great video!

Thank you for this video. I just swapped the alternator on my wife's 2013 2.4L Sorento LX using your steps. The hardest part was actually getting the alternator out of the engine bay past the compressor pulley wheel. I had to drop the subframe like you suggested. If anyone else is doing this on the ground instead of a lift, make sure you jack up the driver's side off the ground as well, or else the wheel on that side won't let the frame drop down low enough. There were three other smaller bolts on the front center of the subframe. I raised and lowered the subframe it with an extra floor jack.

Idler-pulley bolt is 15mm. To drop sub frame I also removed three bolts for the front motor mount. Pull up, to lift power-steering reservoir, which creates room to access the top alternator bolt. To extract old alternator, installed lower bolt until almost tight, minus 1/16 inch, ensuring that max number of threads are engaged, then tapped bolt head, in order to move bushing to open gap, also sprayed penetrating product, not sure which one worked. Great Video. My suggestion is if you are doing this on the ground, removing the PS pump is far easier. I do it for all of the Kia and Hyundai's with 2.0s and 2.4s. On a lift, I might have done it the way it is illustrated in the video.

@@andreakennedy6177 I can't remember off of the top of my head, but I did remove the right side engine mount. I also removed the air intake actuator. Hopefully one of these gives you more room to get the p/s pump out.

With a small engine, I hoped it would be easier to get to. Need to take it to a mechanic shop since so much needs to be removed and it has to go up on a lift. I miss my Bronco, such a huge engine bay, easy to work on while the truck had all 4 on the ground.

You don't have to remove the bottom bolt completely. Just loosen it up to release from the bracket

I pulled the core support loose and took it out the top, it seems I spent a lot less time doing it that way, all I did was pull it forward, not detaching it

Any idea how to change the v belt on a 2.4 liter 2016 Kia Sorento? Serpentine belt came off no problem but can't figure out the v belt. The v belt goes around the water pump.

You should be able to look up a belt diagram online and find the routing. But if the belt came off, you need to find out the reason why it came off

Scott Mahony honestly it's been a while since I worked on one of these. There might be another couple bolts if you take a look. And plus the struts and everything else or holding it all up to. You shouldn't have to move it very much though

Thanks man. When I jacked up the motor it raised the subframe back up. I lowered the motor back down after getting that top bolt out and had more room to work with... or I should say a tiny bit. This was definitely a tight job. Got some decent dings on my hands. I would have to say the hardest part was getting that alternator back on to its brackets. I really appreciate the video it helped me a ton. Kia quoted 895 for the job.

One is out on my wife car now and guess who has to replace it. These automobile company designers need work on a car before it leaves the plant. So basically take everything out and leave the alternator.

@@NoNonsenseKnowHow I'm doing the job on a Rondo, and it's the lower bolt that hits the frame. Going to have to experiment a bit tomorrow to see how I might get it free. I think anyone who designs a part of a car should be forced to do a hands-on replacement, just so they're motivated to make it more user-friendly :-)

You had to drop the subframes remove a a/c compressor just to be Abel to take it out. How much does that job pay at the dealer flat rate? I’d really like to know. Yes, if you're doing it on the ground, you're better off going from the Top. If you read through the comments, you'll see some other people also said that. I'm not sure what the flat rate is. Good luck on the job! It's not bad

I'm thinking just the wheel, cover and that's it, but if have been more happy if it was just moving the tensioner and threading the belt but I'm guessing its not possible with out wheel and cover removal... This is way to much work. No need to go this far. I removed the radiator brackets and the fan shroud. Alternator came out. It’s a 2 hour job if your mechanical inclined.

I sure do and I just done it I've been doing it for about 20 minutes I took the power steering pump out of the way I took the motor mount off the serpentine belt move the radiator hose and the air actuator valve on the side of the intake took loose the alternator lift the motor up take out the top bolt and pulled out the top and drop it back in that way and I'm putting it back together now
