I remember when I was first trying to lose weight when I was around 19 years old. I'd always been fat as a kid, and I was easily getting morbidly obese by that point. My godfather got me a gym membership and a few sessions with a personal trainer, after constantly bringing it up (I think he was genuinely worried, but his way of showing it was talking about how unacceptable it was while he was bringing me into a restaurant... and basically always besides that as well). And I did genuinely start going, and pushed hard too. I started putting on muscle and shedding weight. I was slowly starting to actually feel good about it. I never weighed myself, but looking back at it, I basically got back to a near-normal weight, just looking at the pictures. That was in the span of about... 6 months. So next summer I meet my godfather again, after a long time. I was feeling tentatively proud. I was actually doing a lot here, I was making real progress. For the first time since my pre-teens, I wasn't the fat kid/guy in the room. And so when we meet, he kinda takes a look at me, makes a few humming noises like he's just kinda acknowledging that something's happened... and then he just pushes a hand onto my stomach, *squeezes* whatever belly I had left, wobbles it a bit and just goes "still work to do", with a tone like he wants me to admit it too. I think that just genuinely broke all my desire to keep trying. I was working so fucking hard here, doing everything right, actually finding out things about myself... and all I get to hear after all that work is how much I *haven't* done yet. By the fall, I'd mostly stopped going to the gym. By next year, I was getting back up in weight. I've always tried to think he didn't mean anything bad by it. He was an incredibly active man with zero fat on his body, and every one of his kids was athletic, to the point of competing at national level. His perspective was really skewed. To him, it really did seem like what I was doing wasn't a big achievement, it was the normal. He was a really nice guy, otherwise. And yet, I've never really wanted to hang out with him after that. Knowing that was all he was looking at just killed it for me. I'm normal weight now, and doing much better than back then. It took me 10 more years after that point to care enough to start trying again. That shit really can make a difference... in all the wrong ways.
@ge271929 күн бұрын
@@petrosinella plus, it seems like the trainers go the complete wrong way. have them exercise for 4 hours a day.. needlessly. the guy could have lost all the weight by just not eating anything but a vitamin tablet and at his age he should probably still try to get essential amino acids because he may still be growing. he can manage that with a protein powder shake a day. He can do whatever he wants all day he has to just stop eating so much. Obviously though for him if he wants to get better at wrestling then exercising helps him with that goal, but it still would be far better for him to lose 80lbs in 80 ish days, then start exercising at a far healthier weight... It seems most of these show the weight loss mindset of the "experts" is to require massive amounts of effort from exercise from the client, and then probably just encourages them to eat too much but "healthier". Trying to out exercise a diet too high in calories. Thats just a terrible way to lose weight.

After my first relationship where I gained 50 pounds in about 10 months (I was subconsciously unhappy in our relationship and coped with food and alcohol) my boyfriend ended up dumping me. After that I lost 40 pounds in 4 months and completely quit drinking alcohol. The thing is that I was motivated by the idea of us getting back together. There was no real closure in our relationship and I felt like that meant there was a chance we would end up together again. My motivation only shifted when we had a chance encounter at a thrift store after those 4 months, he obviously noticed my weight loss and I noticed that I actually wasn’t that attracted/smitten over him anymore. I realized that yes him dumping me was a strong motivator that kept me consistently losing weight, but that I didn’t need a relationship with him anymore because I felt so much better about myself that I felt free to be emotionally independent. He ended up trying to contact me after that, and I knew that if I went back to that relationship that I would simply gain the weight back and lose all the progress I had made. The girl is toxic. Manipulative to have her boyfriend give up everything of himself to make sure she feels devoted and loved. And wants to be seen as the "hot" one and how he should feel "lucky" to have snagged such an attractive partner therefore should stop doing everything for her. What? Is she gonna break it off once he gets a full time job? If you have a partner that doesn't push for your success then it's a stagnant relationship. How you show love to your partner is by taking care of yourself then taking care of your partner and household. There is nothing wrong with taking care of yourself first if it means to benefit and support both persons. And in return makes you feel good about yourself and accomplished in your personal goals.

Maybe she is. It’s his responsibility regardless. What’s much more interesting is what you were saying about the importance of self-care ☝️. I was talking about this the other day. Imagine if people cared for themselves as though they’re caring for someone else. How much better would we treat ourselves? The fact that people [usually] take better care of other people than they do of themselves, kinda reveals how much or how little we value ourselves. Even the simplest positive step in looking after ourselves is a little reminder that we’re actually worth looking after. Our brain hears all this. Just my silly little take 😃

I haven't finished watching the video yet. But this hits close to home. My younger brother met his ex girlfriend when he was 14. He was on the path to join the military, fit, confident, popular and outgoing. After meeting his girlfriend,he changed drastically. He stopped taking care of himself, she would always want to eat out and eat fast food. He stopped working out and stopped hanging out with his friends. Years of this, he's overweight, has high anxiety and his world revolved around her. She made him believe he's unattractive and helped him gain weight so that no girl would look at him. Every time he tried to pull away, she would threaten him. By either hurting herself or spreading rumors about him. Even being sexually abusive towards him. It took years for him to finally break away from her. But the damage is done. He's 23 now, and is struggling to find himself and break away from the psychological damage she did to him.

A lot of people fear change, it is a natural response. If someone you love and depend on starts changing it can be scary, and someone with insecurities may sadly cave to those insecurities and start to sabotage the person they love. Duality of man. Man it’s so weird seeing this having gone through the same thing. Clearly this kid was codependent on his girlfriend. His relationship with his dad is strained so of course he’s going to find happiness externally. When you have that level of self deprecation having someone tell you they love you and show you the love and affection that you want is it going to make you want to put that persons needs I front of your own.

That poor kid. Bad trainer, unrealistic goals, unsupportive girlfriend who also enabled his worst habits, and even his parents didn't seem supportive. A better plan would have included moderate goals, celebrated losing 10 pounds a month (which is huge!) and worked in joyful movement (when girlfriend was cheerleading if need be) and realistic changes in eating during Netflix and Chill time like popcorn with brewers yeast as a very low calorie and filling snack. (Hell, Netflix is when I do yoga. It's possible to habit stack a good habit on a bad habit you already do.) I wonder how Tanner is doing today and if he's still with Mikayla? I hope he didn't get worse because he felt like a failure. Losing 40 lbs in 4 months is a lot and they should have made a big deal about that.

I also think this show is an exterme that would be very hard to upkeep in the real world without mtv. Most people , outside of celebrities, can't work out for 5 hours a day, not with a full-time job and school etc so what happens when you want to go down to a more manageable amount of exercise and then you dont see the crazy results then you get demotivated. The truth of weight loss is that it's a long, slow, boring monotonous process with lots of repetition, but no one wants to hear that 100lbs might take you three years to lose.

(Not sure if that's the right term.) If he wanted to "look good" for Mikyla, he'd have to keep putting on the pounds. He was in a no win scenario from the start.

I don't understand these situations. Like, just hang out with your partner while they work out? She could have tagged along and just done some yoga or something and chatted with him. Also, I think the reason "health" is a bad goal is because we know our mortality. If we are aiming to be healthy in 10 years, well, what if we die before then? We as humans need nearby goals because that way we feel more confident we will actually see the reward.
@melchiorlise24668 ай бұрын
I don't think it's really about mortality except maybe for people who are nearing the end of their lives. But relatively young ones never think that way, they never actually consider not being there in ten years time. However I do agree that humans seek results as satisfying as possible, as fast as possible. The reason is because when you eat junks food or play video games the reward is instantaneous and easy: your brain releases feel-good hormones in a matter of milliseconds. Whereas if you workout and eat healthy the reward is belated and harder to achieve. You may have to wait months before you see any positive results.

I once read that when a relationship starts people tend to gain weight not because they "let themselves go", but because even a good relationship still causes some kind of psychological stress and fear of, say, being too close to another person or disappointing them etc., so the overeating may start as a reaction to that stress. Imagine what it must be like in a BAD relationship.
