The Cake story Virginie talks about is actually just about a woman saying "You're cutting the slices too thick." I've done this, and it's not because I was trying to eat less myself or police anyone else. Sometimes there's a lot of people and not a lot of cake. I remember at church, there was this one kid who loved to cut the cake, and it was always huge pieces at the start, and tiny slivers at the end, because he had no idea how to cut a regular sheet cake into enough pieces for sixty or eighty people. So you correct the person, and say "Please cut smaller pieces," just to be fair. But Virginie wanted that big, unfair slice, I guess.

Unfortunately, a lot of people go to extremes. I had a close friend of several years that was a very funny and sweet but terribly insecure in her skin when we met in high school. As the years passed and her food addiction worsened she became much heavier. I would always try to lift her up about herself and her looks, but it wasn't easy when she became increasingly bitter about her weight and her relationship failings. She also wasn't an honest person. She would literally catfish guys online and then react terribly when they wouldn't go on a second date. As if it was all their fault for being lied to. She would praise lies paraded as facts by Tess and the like while simultaneously calling herself a disgusting whale no one will love. She refused every attempt to go on walks together to lose weight as a team but found a way to turn every conversation into her own misery and really developed a love hate relationship with men. Wanting them to want her, and making comments like how all men are weak and can't handle real women - while sitting right in front of my husband who's a wonderful person. I am all for loving the skin you're in. I'm 5'5", just barely under 200 pounds but have been heavier. I won't give up ice cream, but I also make sure to enjoy a varied diet that included fruits and vegetables. I don't go to the gym but I have a physically active job and go on walks. I try to maintain balance and to take care of myself and while my weight loss has been gradual I don't regain what I lose like so many of these "fat" KZbinrs claim. But when it comes to the very obese, I've yet to see a personal example that isn't dominated by refusal to accept blame and self loathing.

There are a lot of diabetics in my family and I don't want to become one, and it kinda scared me to see obesity being pushed as healthy when I know first hand how it feels to be obese vs. how I felt when I was athletic and I know the long-term effects second hand from watching my diabetic family members. The HAES philosophy is terrifying and discouraging to those of us who are not in denial about our problem and looking to fix it.

The fat acceptance movement found me in middle school and struggling with severe binge eating disorder. I was young and vulnerable, and indulged my binging compulsions because I truly believed it wouldn't harm me. I was so very wrong- I now have a horrible food addiction, and have risked my life with huge binges because of stomach rupture. If I had learned how to deal with these urges appropriately, it's possible I wouldn't have the daily painful struggle I have today. I'm fully tube fed and my digestive system barely functions. The idea that this movement isn't hurting anyone is so, so false.

I completely understand about wanting to fit into regular size chairs. We have several chairs at my home that have the sides up so you have to be a particular size to sit in them comfortably, and for the longest time I wasn't able to sit in them comfortably. My thighs would press up against the sides, and it would be massively uncomfortable. I felt so ashamed that I had let myself get that big. I had gained a lot of weight because my mom passed away in 2019, and I have always struggled with my weight. I've been up before and I've been down. My highest weight has been 267, and my lowest weight has been 199. And I have a huge list of family history and personal weight related issues. But last month, I decided I had had enough, and I'm currently working my way to 170 lb. I'm very proud to say that I've lost a good bit of weight (14 pounds) and can now fit in regular size chairs. I legitimately cried. Really sorry for the long reply, but I felt like sharing.

I was always athletic on build whatever that means. But hit 30 or so and went from 165 to 220. It's not just the aesthetic of being thin. I ran out of breath very quick. Hard time even walking. Couldn't play sports. The amount of things made more difficult by an extra 55 lbs of visceral fat is seemingly unending. I couldn't even do more than four pushups. Never again. But I lost the weight by lifting six days a week, cycling in the gym for an hour which was only hard for a week or two. You get use to it and enjoy it rather quick. I also walked to the gym about a mile. Tried to walk anything less than 2.5 miles. Took steps as well if under five flights. Most important I think though was reducing sugar intake to below 8 grams a day and cutting out bread. I had a Sunday treat day where I'd maybe take a trip to Arby's. But I was down to 165 in a summer. Started in May and was at weight by October. I'm not a particularly disciplined and person either. I don't think it would even register as one of the hardest things I've done. The weights hurt a few months. I dreaded the bike a few weeks as I said. I learned how to cook. You reach a point where bad foods actually taste bad to you once you get on a veggie and meat diet. Just get through that first month. It's easy.

I don't think "more times than normal" is a valid argument. There is no real standard to how many times is considered normal for eating.. it's more in proportion to how much you eat. 3 meals a day is a societal construct. Many people eat once, twice, or many times a day and happen to adjust to that. My grandmother is diabetic and she can only handle eating small bits of food at a time, therefore she eats like 6 or so times a day. It may be unusual but there is nothing abnormal about it

I had a different read on the cake story. It seems the woman said the slices should be smaller (i.e., the entire cake should be cut into smaller slices) and Virgie freaks out because smaller slices mean she will not get as much cake as she craves. That is, this woman was getting between Virgie and her gluttony.
@Obsession_Queen_2458 ай бұрын
That’s what I was thinking too! Maybe the woman was asking for the cake to be cut into smaller slices so there was enough for everyone, not because she was judging others for the size of their slice of cake. It’s such a strange mindset to have to immediately go to being judged.

I fell into this rabbit hole of "body positvity" years ago and my god, it did not help with my self-esteem. The more I watch of these types of activists like Tovar, the more I realized what hypocrites they are. At the time, I was a teenager and like you said, I was also kind of vulnerable and looked for a reason to make myself feel better. Finding the movement drove me into this fake facade of "loving myself so I'll eat whatever I want". This lasted for a year I think, until I saw that video of Fatphobia on TEDTalk. Lol it was as if I had an epiphany. This was not how I should love myself, I was literally hurting it and I didn't want to turn into the speaker - I could hear how hard she was breathing and walking seemed difficult. That was no life to live. I dropped everything that's sugary or snacks and started exercising more. I already walked to school everyday at that point and exercising more sure was hard but I felt like myself again. I was much happier and more cheerful. These activists aren't doing anyone any favors, they are just looking for an excuse to stay the way they are. Fatphobia isn't a thing, no one is scared of you because you're fat. Most people stayed away because your mentality is absolutely toxic. And the cake thing is hilarious. I love cakes by all means, but the cake in her video (from my experience) is often super sweet and I tend to stay away from them because eating them would give me a headache. Not everyone wants to undress a cake like you sweetheart, chill. Sorry this was long, but I needed this and really liked that you called this type of mentality out.

My entire mom's side of the family is a genetic crap shoot (including me) where everyone is overweight and addicted to food. I got so angry at the age of 12 that I restricted my diet permanently (haven't had fast food/baked goods/drinks aside from milk and water since then, I'm 18 now) and I went from borderline obese to just slightly overweight for my height, which is great because my bones are so gigantic that slightly overweight is really just normal for me. My mom's side of the family (including my mother) took offense to my newly adopted lifestyle, and since their lives revolved around food, whenever I saw them it always became them trying to force feed me things. They pressured me into eating things I did not want. Every time I saw them. Finally around a year ago my mom stopped, but she always wonders why I started alienating her/her family. Toxic body positivity is real, and it separated me from half of my family. In a streak of bloody irony, many of my relatives on my father's side are legitimately fatphobic. I'm glad you found a way out of that unpleasant mindset. I can confirm that I do indeed stay away from my mom's family because of the toxic mentality, not because they are fat.

How is having self-control and discipline a bad thing? It's what keeps us from being mindless brutes. We don't have to bow to every whim and urge we get. Truly successful people are those that know how and when to tell themselves "no". It's not fatphobic or sexist, it's responsible.
@dx14503 жыл бұрын

If I didn't have control over myself, I would be in prison. Quite a common internal reaction to when someone pisses you off majorly is to think, "I could hit them". But we don't hit them because it's both rude and illegal. Basically, if we all followed all our whims and urges most people would either assault someone or be assaulted. Is it really such a bad thing to practice a little self discipline?
@mariacolon97563 жыл бұрын
This is the world we live in, selfish and very individualistic people who want to succumb to every desire, every urge until they, eventually, get bored and try to find something new. And when they see a person who is the opposite and have control of themselves and are disciplined it makes them feel inadequate and therefore ashamed because they know they are wrong.

Overeating doesn't exist? Here's how overeating has affected me throughout my life: * I developed and ED called binge eating disorder * I developed an unhealthy coping mechanism based on self harming through eating things that I knew were bad for me, landing me in the hospital to the point of once even having kidney failure * Several hospitalisations due to stomach problems and gallstones that lead to my gallbladder being removed * I've had stomachaches, migraines, vomiting, diarrhea, toothache and other consequences of overeating unhealthy foods that made me be in excruciating pain * I now have high cholesterol * I'm taking medication for hypertension and at risk of stroke and heart attack * I'm at risk of developing diabetes type 2, like it happened to my mum after a lifetime of indulging in those big portions of cake * I have to follow a very strict diet to counteract all the efects of overeating unhealthy foods for decades. So no fried food cos my body can't process it, no salt, no sugar, no coffee for me... It's all well and good for these younger fat activists to accept their bodies and indulge in every craving of junk food now but they will suffer the consequences later. And they're encouraging other people to endanger their lives too! Please don't listen to them and take care of yourselves! There's nothing wrong with eating a slice of cake at a birthday, but a balance diet will make your quality of life much better. The human body is not designed to consume all this processed, addictive, harmful foods!

Any ideology that preaches “less self-control”, “don’t care”, and “do whatever you want” mentality, is going to make a person miserable. No one genuinely lives their life removed from rules and expectations, and really no one should.

Less self control is such a bad thing, i know because i struggle with it. If you don't have self control you can't do the things you WANT to do, the path to freedom is self control although that sounds contradictory you're free to do what you want and not do what you don't want to.
