These are all really good (and valid points). I don't believe in a system where only certain calories are acceptable - if you want oreos, eat some oreos - but weight loss for me works through portion control AND schedule control. I can "feel" hungry all I want, but if its not a specific time on the clock then its not TIME to eat. This is the part that helps deal with appetite cravings. Then, knowing at those specific times the exact amounts of food I can eat deals with the potential for overeating. The issue is, and always will be, that most people do not have the innate understanding of their metabolic processes to create these routines for themselves and, instead, turn to the internet for a generic version which usually doesn't fit their unique situations. Not everyone can work with a nutritionist and personal trainer so they try some Weight Watchers version of these methods and fail at it so assume they can't lose weight...and stop trying.

In the beginning of my weight loss, I was still getting used to "eating less". My body was flashing hunger signals at me even though I already ate enough calories, because it was still used to me overeating at every meal. So I grabbed a fistful of spinach and ate it until I was comfortable. "If you're hungry just eat lettuce" is perfectly valid advice but DANGEROUS if not given full context.

Same. But nowadays I eat only when I'm physically hungry. I'm glad my hunger reset after I was sick and didn't eat anything besides maybe a fruit a day for 1.5 weeks. When I once again felt the hunger feeling, I was pretty glad. I can keep my wheight if I only eat when I'm hungry and only self cooked food. Cooked potatoes are around the same claores as pasta, but fill you up way more. If you eat them reheated or cold after cooking, some of the starch will become undigestible stach and your gut microbiome will be happy to take care of it.

Late reply, but same for me. The only way I could get that ab definition was by starving myself, and cutting calories enough to become underweight. “Feeding your craving is just as bad as starving yourself” - best quote I’ve heard in FORever
@PetConnectionInternational2 жыл бұрын
I just wanted to add in that calorie quality also matters in the short term - because broccoli is packaged in a bunch of fibre, this means that the body has to work extra hard to get to those calories, thus using more energy (same goes for protein), so 1000 calories of broccoli *when eaten* is actually LESS calories than 1000 calories of oreos because of how calorically available they are, nutrient digestibility greatly impacts the ability of the body to access those nutrients, including calories ☺️ The amount of calories labelled as being in a food are the amount of calories released from that food when it's burned and 100% of the energy is released, but in reality because of the complexities of the digestion process, we can rarely get 100% of the calories from food (refined white sugar is assumed in calculations to be 100% digestible and everything else is compared against it) - how do we get the digestibility values you may ask? Poop, poop is the answer, lots and lots of poop. You compare calories in Vs (very literal) calories out, it's not a job for those with a sensitive snout I'll tell you 🤢😂 (Not a nutrition scientist - but have a BSc degree in animal science, which involved A LOT of nutrition [and unfortunately poop] 😅)

As a result I was able to move more which in turn deceased the pain even more. And burned calories. But I only started losing weight noticably once I began counting calories properly and really watching what I was eating. A friend who only wanted to lose a few kilograms did it as well. She skipped breakfast and ate normally during the rest of the day and that one dropped meal was enough that she managed to lose those kilograms. When I figured out I could sustain a moderate calorie deficit by replacing my dinner with a huge bowl of fresh vegetables, all my anxiety about weight disappeared. It's so easy for me to lose a few pounds here and there that I'm just taking my time with it and feeling better and better about my body in the meantime. Feeling better about my body creates a positive feedback loop where I enjoy unhealthy food less and less because I can feel how it's making me less healthy and making me irrationally hungry and out of balance. I think intuitive eating has to be a result of careful practice and adjusting our habits so that we gain an intuitive understanding of what our body needs to function well. Starting with intuitive eating when you're still used to following cravings and eating unhealthy food just puts you at an unfair disadvantage. I couldn't have gotten to this point without tracking my calories carefully for several months and learning a full day's worth of calories actually looks like...AND accepting that compromise is necessary. When I eat a bowl of fresh produce, I'm giving up the dopamine of highly palatable foods, but in return I get to feel comfortably full for very few calories, which brings its own sort of satisfaction. Best of all, it gives me a lot more leeway in what I eat for breakfast and lunch, so I don't even feel deprived!
