As someone who's done his fair share of hitchhiking, I can suggest not standing right before the intersection where there's one lane to drive off to the destination. People rarely stop there due to limited space.

This is probably something I would have done if I missed my connection, moreso if I was your age. I hitchhiked all over Scandinavia, a band from Bulgaria in a minivan saved my life in the arctic circle, I hitchhiked from Copenhagen to Germany with a truck driver and then once I hit Deutschland I hitchhiked a lot. I went with the flow, but the rest of Europe seemed less enthusiastic about picking up people in winter so I stopped. Dude, I haven't laughed so hard at some of your comments and predicaments and incredible vlogs. Thank you for the reality check. I will probably just stay home and live vicariously, some of these places I have thought to travel don't look quite as appealing. For me, the food and meeting kind people is enough.

I had a very similar experience while on a train from Dresden to Prague back in 2006. I attempted to cross into Czech with a Eurailpass (which I knew did not cover Czech at that time but was going to play stupid). I got caught and the ticket inspector kept shouting "YOU GET OFF - NEXT STOP!" (Which was at the border of Czech and Germany - in the middle of the night). Oddly enough, he wanted Czech Crowns and not Euros - and so I went thru the entire train until someone lent me some Crowns. lol

I used to hitchhike in the 80's (when it was more common), for some reason the first ride was always the hardest, after that, for some unexplainable reason, it became easier. Maybe it was just confidence, maybe it was me fooling myself. But one thing i learnt quickly: Have a motorcycle helmet on display because motorcyclists are always flattered, and happy to help.

As an American. never ask if it is okay to tip. It is extremely rude. Just hold out money and try to give it to them and if they refuse, just be on your way. Nothing worse than someone acting coy and seeing if it is okay to tip rather than outright offering money.
