Helpful repair video, the mosfets usually go bad, sometimes the small ones too.

Someone gave me a Kicker to try and repair which had a very similar issue. (KX600.1) The amp would power up just fine, rail voltage and oscillation on the output transistors. The relay was receiving 12V and was engaging. Just because I was stumped wound up pulling the relay and checking with power supply. The coil read about 400 ohms but the NC pin was reading about 200K when relay off and the NO pin was reading in the Mega Ohms. (Also the NC pin doesn't do anything on the board just fyi) I had a relay with the same coil voltage and amperage (but not the same pinout) so I wired it in to test it and voila, it was the relay and I'm guessing it had very dirty contacts. Thanks for the video - JS

Good stuff. Clearly a normally open relay. Wasn't getting the signal to energize the coil.

My lucky find was an Earthquake 400TX, I did choose to recap it but all it needed was the PWM, bought it for $30! Another was a HCCA 225G4 $50 and it did need new mosfets and output transistors!

Hello, thank you for sharing this. I have an 800watts Boschmann amplifire that i'm using in my room. It is a 4 channel class AB amplifire. I carelessly used low rated speakers at high volumes and damaged 2 of the channels, (1 and 4). Channel 1 seems fine but when i connect a speaker and raise the volume to a certain point the amp goes into protection. But at low volumes its ok. Channel 4 is also fuctioning but it produces some scratching sounds. The rest of the channels are fine. Please advice what could be the problem and how i could fix it.

How did you learn all this to fix these? I bought a few bad amps and really am trying to learn to fix them, but haven't got none to work yet. Please give me some pointers or something! I bought a nice soldering station and got a multimeter, but don't know how to use it that well.

Practice, research. Try googling bcae1. read that entire site, and then he also makes a tutorial that is a great resource.

I have now my second zx1000.1 that bit the dust. Where can we find good info on troubleshooting and repairing amps?
@TheAmpLab10 жыл бұрын
bcae1.com Perry Babin He also sells a tutorial thats pretty in depth. That will get you started. You'll need some equipment though. A good soldering iron, a good multimeter, a test bench of some sort, and an oscilloscope just to get going.

the relay comes seal from the factory 2:30 is rare to see one that is corroded but by removing it to be sure you found the problem :)

Hi, what do you use to clean up and stop the corrosion on the boards? Thanks
@TheAmpLab10 жыл бұрын
Acetone. Works great. Be careful because it will east some plastics. Usually not any of the components in the amplifier, but just keep that in mind. Don't get it on anything cosmetic on the outside of the amp. It also takes the labeling off some of the capacitors if you're not careful. Again, cosmetic really. So just be careful with it and acetone is your best friend cleaning inside an amplifier.

Man I just repaired one whole side of bad mosfets, but when I just put power to it, it came one fine for like 20 seconds n just smoked again. Have any idea why it would do that? Any help would be really grateful!
@TheAmpLab9 жыл бұрын
There could be many many reasons. Are you talking about power supply or output side? You need to check the gate resistors to make sure they are all within specs. You also need to check the drivers transistors and pre-driver transistors (If it has them) to make sure they are also not open or shorted. Best thing you can do to save yourself from replacing components over and over is to run the main power wire through a large current limiting resistor, or something like the high beam side of an automotive sealed beam headlight. If there is excessive current draw from a bad component or a transistor stuck on, the light will light brightly and sink some of that current and save parts from just smoking when you power it on. Also, a NECESSARY tool you will need if you're repairing an amplifier is an O-Scope! You need to be able to test different drive signals to make sure they are acting properly before you solder in expensive transistors. For instance if you do not have a good square wave signal going to your power supply FETs, and you power it up, they will get hot VERY fast and fail.

Wow I'm so new to these newer amps. Back in the 90s I fixed a couple amps,but those amps were easy usually just bridging a bad part on the board. I bought a few of these bad amp n thought it would be fun fixing them for a hobby. I been watching you guys fixing them on utube n it wasn't looking as hard as what I'm going through. I bought a really soldering station n have a multimeter n that's all right now. The amp I'm talking about is a jbl gto7001 it's a 700 watt amp. Man I really appreciate you answering me back! I'm sure you have better things to do, but no really thank you. I guess I got to find a oscilloscope n learn all this.
@TheAmpLab9 жыл бұрын
Again, check out BCAE1.com It's worth reading through for sure. And yes, an O-scope is essential. Especially once you learn where to test and what youre supposed to be looking for.

Hantek 6022BC oscilloscope. Do you know if this will work for what I'm goin to need it for? This is one that plugs in the computer for the screen.
@TheAmpLab9 жыл бұрын
Personally I don't like the ones that plug into the computer, but Ive had limited experience with them also. If youre on a budget pick up a Velleman PPS10. Its a handheld scope. I use one all the time and it works great and is fairly cheap. The resolution is pretty good as well.

It will come in handy if you want to set gains on an amp in a vehicle as well since it's handheld.

@Dorky939411 жыл бұрын
Help! My kicker zx400.1 is making a high pitched noise! It sounds like a bunch of high pitched beeps, like a computer trying to load a software. This started happening to me about a week after I got it installed. The grounds are good and when I unplug the RCAs it still makes the noise. Took it back to the guys who installed it and they said it's nothing. It sometimes gets really loud at random times. I'm running 2 12' kickers off it. It doesn't get hot or anything. Any ideas?
@TheAmpLab10 жыл бұрын
Is the noise coming physically out the amplifier chassis? Out of the subs? Or out of your interior speakers? What kind of car? What head unit, stock or aftermarket?
@Dorky939410 жыл бұрын
The sound was physically coming from the amp. Since then I've got a new amp and it has worked great. Thanks anyway!
@TheAmpLab10 жыл бұрын
Oh ok Didn't realize how old that comment was. Sorry. That's usually just a transformer inside. it physically vibrates sometimes. Just reaching inside and twisting it a bit usually eill make it stop.
