Kicking off in Blackpool: Taxi Protest 🚕🚕🚕

Blackpool taxi drivers staged a protest on Wednesday June 12th against unlicensed cab drivers, including those going under the Uber banner.

According to Blackpool Transport's website the tram timetable is changing from Sunday, July 16th. This is due to the opening of the North Station extension, with the existing Starr Gate - Fleetwood via promenade service being numbered T1 and new services T2 Starr Gate - North Station & T3 Fleetwood - North Station are introduced from this date. All will operate every 30 minutes, giving a combined 15 minute frequency along the promenade. Hope this is of interest. Regards Ian Simpson.

@@bowjana8128 and your proof of this is what? I suspect you are connected in some way to them, as Uber drivers actually go thru more security checks, further they are constantly tracked. It's much safer it's approaching the end days for traditional taxis personally I say make it harder for them to force them to quit. The days of charging £10 for. A 2 miles drive is soon over.

I live in Northern Ireland, but visit Blackpool often. Last time I was in a taxi in Blackpool, it was from after seeing Ken Webster at the Pleasure Beach, and was going to the Strand hotel, which is north shore! Outside Nelly Deans the Taxi driver (who was speeding) hit a pedestrian who we clearly seen before the taxi we were in did! We could have stuck around and told the police our side of the story, and I'm pretty sure the taxi driver knew he was in the wrong! However, we did stay there for 15 mins and no police. Getting late, we walked back to our hotel! The taxi driver charged us full fare!!

Great video Stephen, going to be some accidents on that road with the trams Friday and Saturday nights with the clubs and bars. Blackpool, bispham, cleveleys, Fleetwood taxis are the best we've ever used. Always spotlessly clean, drivers are always pleasant, chatty and helpful, not come across a bad one yet. Prefer to get ripped off by a local firm then? Give you an example where I live, I live 1.8 miles from the train station if I order a Uber it costs me around £5-6. If I use the local firm minimum it will cost is £9. Weekends and after 11pm it's around £11. Which is a huge difference

How much do taxi owners pay for license plates now in Blackpool? I owned a taxi on C cabs from 1976-paid 10 grand in those days for plates. Got out of the job in 1985 and moved to Australia.

it's cheaper to license in wolverhampton which is why so many drivers are licensed there not just in Blackpool. As for Uber well they contributed to party funds in days gone by which is why they've been allowed to driver British drivers out of business and export all their profits almost completely tax free

Good Evening Stephen. Oh dear, never mind. Least it was a Lovely walk about around Blackpool. Rather a lot of Police i could see. There was no Rioting or any Street Brawling. Surely people know how to behave and conduct a Peaceful Protest in their Taxi's. I thought that we now Lived in a Democracy, Freedom of Speech, the Right to Protest, people standing up for there Rights. I totally Understand and Agree with the Taxi Drivers. Yes i do.

As an ex taxi driver I can tell you that most Asian drivers drive off the same licence most don't know there head from there toe but unfortunately there no money in it anymore because they work for next to nothing but I suppose you can when you live 10 to a house

Local taxi drivers need supporting, there the ones that spend their cash and live in and around Blackpool. Uber drivers are not local and need to do one. They get their licenses in Wolverhampton and from other fleecing councils. However Taxis aren’t cheap and they do need to look at their pricing structure.

Yes, Stephen. It was a protest by the licenced taxi drivers and Uber and the cheaper taxi plates available via Wolverhampton Council that allows them to undercut the usual fares. The police moved them on as they brought the town centre to a standstill (which of course was the intention) and so it was a problem if an ambulance or fire appliance needed access. Hence the flat bed recovery lorry, just in case. The VIP tram also needed access, not so much going up, but as you saw from the other footage you got, more from the return journey later on. Anyway, it all went well with the brass band and a ribbon cutting at North Station Tram stop, an excellent reception at Marco's and the return of passenger carrying trams to Talbot Rd for the first time since 1936!! 88 years ago. There are 3 special tours per day tomorrow and the day after using Flexity 2's (Thurs and Friday) and a heritage tram, probably the 1934 prototype Balloon 700, on Saturday. Then it starts with normal service on Sunday. The issue might be though that every other tram will be a North Station tram, so a full system one (Fleetwood to Starr Gate) will now be only every half hour, instead of every 15 minutes as they currently are. The others will be Starr Gate to North Station or Fleetwood to North Station and the two don't connect at North, by one minute. So, to get a quicker through journey if you miss a direct one, it may be best getting off at Tower stop if going north, walk to North Pier stop and catch the one coming down for Fleetwood from North Station and the opposite if going south. ( Actually, I forgot that now, as of Sunday, there's a new stop at the prom end of Talbot Road, called Talbot Square, so that would be the best place to change trams and avoid a longer wait. Should all be lots of fun. Makes you wonder how it all worked before they closed all the inland routes, like Marton and Lytham Rd in the early 60's, including the Dickson Rd one that served North Station. Let the fun commence!!. Might be worth a video on or after Sunday of the possible fun and frolics!! Lol.

@bredaquirke7362 From memory it's 10.40 off Starr Gate. So PLEASE double check it. DON'T take that as gospel. Then around 2pm and again at 7pm. So add say 20 mins. It's all on the Blackpool heritage tram website I think. Hope this helps.
