Jay and Sean's movie review of the day is Kid 90, a Hulu original documentary expected to release on March 12 2021.
An intimate look at young Hollywood starlets growing up in the 1990s, using hundreds of hours of footage captured by Soleil Moon Frye.
Director: Soleil Moon Frye
Stars: Soleil Moon Frye, Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Jonathan Brandis, David Arquette, Stephen Dorff, Brian Austin Green, Perry Ferrell, Balthazar Getty, Heather McComb
Soleil Moon Frye starred on an 80s sitcom called Punky Brewster when she was just 7 years old. When the show ended, she’d had a strange and abbreviated childhood. Only a wild and weird adolescence could possibly follow, but this one she would spend behind a camera rather than in front of it.
She and her friends, all of them young Hollywood royalty, had the money and access to do whatever they pleased. It was the 90s; the internet wasn’t a worry yet, going viral meant something else entirely, they could do what they wanted with no consequences. And they were young: they hadn’t learned yet to be jaded or guarded or filtered. Among friends, they let it all hang out, and it didn’t matter that one of them constantly hauled around a camcorder because behind it was Soleil’s friendly face. Thirty years have gone by, and Frye is only now taking this footage out of the vault to share with us. She’s created a living portrait of a lot of famous faces, but also of a time and place that no longer exists.
Frye’s famous friends include Stephen Dorff, David Arquette, Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Jonathan Brandis, Charlie Sheen, Balthazar Getty, Jenny Lewis, Brian Austin Green, and briefer appearances by Robin Thicke, Leonardo DiCaprio, Joey Lawrence, Mark Wahlberg, Sara Gilbert, Corey Feldman, Mark McGrath, Kevin Connelly, and way more besides. Hard-hitting topics covered include Brian Austin Green’s misguided rap album, Soleil Moon Frye’s breast reduction, a live Bronco chase watch party, and the meteoric rise of House of Pain. And more seriously, suicide, a subject that comes up much more often than average within Frye’s set.
Soleil Moon Frye, who is the documentary’s subject as well as its director, constantly challenges the notion of memory - does she remember these heady days correctly? The same as everyone else? Does it even matter? It’s an act of remembering and remembrance - sometimes wistful, sometimes painful, sometimes playful, sometimes tinged with regret. Fry had hundreds of hours of footage but crafts something that is very watchable, and that serves a greater narrative. It’s fun to see some famous faces de-aged, it’s fun that so many of her famous friends were musicians who contribute to the soundtrack. But this, for a young woman who didn’t have a normal high school experience, is her yearbook. Many of the faces she’s lost touch with over the years, others she’s grieved and lost. But these images live on, telling a story with one common theme: we were here.
Kid 90 will stream on Hulu on March 12 2021; the Punky Brewster reboot is already available on Peacock.
Leonardo DiCaprio also serves as a producer.
Kid 90 also features Danny Boy O'Connor, Justin Pierce, Harold Hunter, Dustin Diamond, Mario Lopez, Jonathan Silverman
Punky Brewster was famous for Very Special Episodes, including the Challenger explosion, and the danger of old refrigerators.

Anyone unfamiliar w/ 1995's Kids by Harmony Korine has no idea how shockingly, yet pleasantly, surprising it was to see Justin Pierce & Harold Hunter. Justin was special.

This is definitely on my watch list. I loved Punky Brewster growing up, I had Punky Brewster snow boots lol. I was born the in the early 80's, so I was an 80's kid and a 90's kid/teen so this documentary definitely has a lot of nostalgia for me. Hope you guys are having a great weekend!

Same i was born in 1981(June to be exact), and i remember stuff from 3 onwards so from 1984 onwards! And the 80'swas just so magical as kid, and then with all the technology like: Mobile(Brick Phones), Pagers, Fax Machines, CGI, DNA, Teletext/Ceefax, Contraceptive Injection, Satellite TV, Video Cameras, VHS/Betamax, Laser Disc, CD's, Walkman, Computer Consoles/PCs, When Musicals then turned into Mega Musicals with very high budget Sets + Special Effects like CATS, Starlight Express, Les Miserables, TIME, Miss Saigon, etc

I grew up watching Punky as a kid and Soleil was one of my biggest influences. It was heartbreaking to see what she went through with her body, especially at only 12/13 years old. To see her get all giddy when someone like Mark Wahlberg leaves her a message on her answering machine was a nice reminder that behind all that fortune and fame is a regular teenage girl. Ahhh thanks for reminding me of the SBTB reboot. I'll have to check out the Saved By The Bell and Punky reboots.

The Punky Brewster reboot is what I thought this was going to be about when I first saw it. This documentary sounds very interesting. Captured in time. Funny to think how some of them faded, some of them exploded in popularity, and now many of them are kind of back where they were with reboots of shows.

Soleil Moon Frye played one of Joey's girlfriends on "Friends". . . she was the one who kept punching him, so he wore a ton of clothes. Lisa Kudrow's character decided to punch her back to show her that it wasn't funny and that it did hurt.

I've not heard of this movie before but it sounds like it would be pretty good. To see how life was for them sounds fun. They were too young to know to filter themselves and like you said, no internet yet. Not as much threat yet to their fame. Great review.

I was skeptical about this upon hearing about it. Frye was like many successful child actors whose talents did not transition, despite efforts, into a successful adult actress. Her lifestyle was very Bohemian and her funds modestly spent in how she and her single mother lived. Their house was full of people and lots of minors all being allowed to eat, drink, smoke and party in the pool. Her mother created an environment that was the backdrop for what Frye lived. Her video doc of her party years in LA and NYC and reunions with old boyfriends and friends were very intense. Her recognition of friends who committed suicide and or died was incredible. Her written musings in the 1990’s were very poignant. In short this was a great documentary that certainly made me cry and think of my old friends and what it was like growing up in the 1990’s. A very powerful piece from an actress I think many of us forgot about. Not anymore. Watch it.

If you grew up with Saved By The Bell, Teen Beat, 90210, Degrassi Junior High and the like...you were darn lucky. I watched an interview with Kelly Clarkson, Soleil, and Freddie Prinze Jr. The would definitely watch this documentary as well as he new series. FYI - River Phoenix was my very first “young” crush...Captain Jean Luc Picard was my simultaneous “older” crush.

Oh WOW I had no idea about this. I have been thinking of getting a subscription to Hulu. I may have to do so now. I think it would be hard to be famous as a kid. And yeah I would not allow my kids to be in show business they can make that decisions as adults. Hmm yes that is a lot of loss. Fame is a weird beast and not even can handle it, even adults struggle with this. You know this weekend I watched "Girls Just Want To Have Fun" from 1985. SJP was sooooo young as we Helen Hunt and the music and the clothes. Fun to watch and it is on YT. Wow with Freddy Prince Junior and a reboot. So cool that she got all this footage. I feel like this type of thing and shows like Stranger Things do well b/c it is right before/pre the digital age. Ah yes I do recall The Challenger it was my Birthday and I was home from school and I was watching it live. Yes I can imagine the editing would hard and what to choose. Thanks for the review and the heads up! 👍 🤗 😍

the internet did exist when soleil was a teen...but it was dial up, you had to use a portal like aol or compuserve, it was really expensive and there was no social media, video upload or streaming media...the tech wasnt there yet as for her plastic surgery....if you see a star's plastic surgery being publicized, it's because her pr firm wants it to be. it got her on tons of talk shows when her career was pretty much dead. it's clear that for the most part, she got the surgery for the wrong reasons and it's one of the reasons that teens shouldnt be getting plastic surgery without things like counseling beforehand. i saw the doc as a vanity project. you dont really get any insight and soleil doesnt do any deep dives into what she and others went through. glad you noticed that most of soleil's friends are male she seems oblivious to this. i was really bothered with her relationships with older guys. sorry, when she lost her virginity to charlie sheen, that was statutory rape. interesting how much the saved by the bell reboot is like degrassi tng. the show runner for the show is the guy who did the funny or die "zach morris is trash"...so zach is supposed to be a total ahole
