I agree with this wholeheartedly. My mom put up with my older brother just kind of drifting through his early 20s. Now he's 37 and still lives at home, he's never moved out. There's nothing wrong with him that he can't live independently, he's just got it to good under mom's roof to be bothered to get his own place.

Dave's advice sounds like what my mom did. By the end of my senior year I was skipping all but 2-3 classes a day, doing just enough to pass. She had me shadow several professionals she was friends with for a day each, and after spending a day with a construction project manager I knew that was my goal. The next week I signed up for a construction technology program at the local community college and graduated with a 3.84 GPA.

No vision, dropped out of college, no motivation, plays video games a lot, works part time, lives at home. A lot of people at 21 have no clear direction, because they don't have enough information about what is out there, how much it will cost to pursue, what the advantages are and results at the end. He did try to do college, and decided that whatever he was doing was not for him. Good for him for not running up a tremendous debt and tossing the degree aside at the end of it. There is nothing wrong, in my opinion, in taking some time to decide a better path. He is working, is not partying, and he seems to be paying his way for right now. Not everyone is a fast burner in their career and in making money. There are important other reasons to explore career options, and working 80+ hours a week is Dave's dream, not everyone else's.

I agree with everything you wrote. Only thing I can say is, don’t do this while living with your parents after 20. I stayed with my parents at 21, but was going to trade school and working. Coming home to moms cooking just helped ease the stress. Now I’m financially secure, live on my own, can still come home for moms cooking, and continue looking towards what I want to do with my life.

Not many kids our age blink an eye at 40k debt for a generic business degree or underwater basket weaving. I think I sympathize with his mind set more than Dave since I'm 25 and was in that exact position at 21. Too scared to go in debt for a degree were most won't have any ROI, don't want to be a tradesman because it's not what we have any interest in, and with a future in fast food being the only option ahead of us, I can see why depression and suicide are on the rise here for young folks. You feel helpless. Not justifying how he's handling it, just can relate. Praying for ya, duder. Hope you find something you love and can at least head towards it confidently and passionately.

I disagree with dave... cause on one hand he'll criticize the high student loan debt and the less than smart students who take them out...but here you have a dude dropping out, realizing this may not be for him before he incurs over 30k in debt like others with non relevant degrees. Let him figure himself out... as long as he working.....I wouldnt wish over 30k in debt on anyone especially if they're forced to buy into the get a degree and itll set you free dream. It's a farce.

Nothing is stopping anyone from paying their own way through college by working. Want to make more money than fast food? Try working for a landscaping company or any type of general labor. Yes it's hard work but it will pay higher than minimum wage and would only be temporary if you are using it to fund a degree in a less physically taxing field of work. After two years of college I moved back home at age 20, took a few classes at the local JC, and took a near-full-time menial job (not fast food, but similar level). Did it for seven months, one of my biggest regrets is that my parents didn't let me do that for longer. I learned a lot about the real world working a regular job for the first time, and had a better idea of what I wanted to do, but I would have done better at clearing my head and finding direction if I had done it for a full year like I wanted. I probably would also have made better grades when I did go back. Getting taken out to lunch and having my ears boxed by a couple of middle-aged men in my family church would have just made me hate my parents more.

It sounds like this guy has been home from college for a lot longer than 7 months. And he didn’t even get that job until his mom threatened to kick him out. With only $3000 in student loans I imagine this kid only went to college for a semester, meaning at 21 he may have been home for 2 or 3 years already, most of which he had no job at all

when i was in my 20 s i was lost one day i got a call from my uncle he said come on down to my house i would like to show you what i do he worked for himself he had a small two man printing shop just him and his partner i went down and he showed me what he did and how he did it it was only one visit and we talked on the phone a few times then i started to try to get a job in printing i had no direction now i had one i had a great dad but sometimes it takes a man out side of your normal zone to get you moving he didnt help me get a job didnt introduce me to anybody he really lived to far away from me to be any help other then what he did but that one visit changed everything i got low level jobs and moved my way up the latter and had a whole career from that I think thats all that kid needs is a Man to give him a little direction and encouragement but like Dave said somebody from his church from somebody who just will talk to him with respect and dosnt want anything from him somebody that has it together Parents sometimes are to close to the situation to be any help THAT WAS GREAT ADVICE i know becouse it happened to me this is one of my favorite calls

Hard to believe that with everything going on in college these days, the debts, the celebs buying their kids into college that people still fall for the higher education belief. If you're going to be a doctor, a lawyer, an engineer, etc. then go. I left after 3 years of J.C. As much I everybody thought I made a stupid decision, in the long run it was the right one. Just worked hard, got on the job training, got certification in my specialty my company paid for, started my own business, have had only 3 cars (Payments) No debt, no kids. It's not so much college as it is the choices you make along the way!

Yeah in this day and age, a college degree is expensive and not as worth it as it used to be. Im glad you at least consider some careers need it tho. I hate when people comment saying college is always a scam no matter what. In the future if I have kids and life is similar to what it is now, Im definitely gonna encourage them to look at non-college options if theyre not passionate about a college-necessary career

@@saraashkir5793 The degree is expensive and overrated now in society because it became too much available to too many people, it lost over half it´s actual value it used to have a few decades back, now one has to deal with multiple competition from students all wanting this or that job and many are left out and those unwilling to build-up connections in college for possible future job opportunities are at a even greater risk. College isnt a scam per say, but as I said the degree lost it´s value the more people got to it and expenses for college arent cheap, so I can see why some would think it´s a scam, on the longterm if the price they pay to get the degree doesnt get them the rewards they expected, but the fact is, going to college just for the degree is stupid and these people need to open up their eyes to the actual potentials of getting into college and doing right in there.

Sounds kind of like me when I was young...though I would never fail out of school. I liked computers as well so what I did was join the Air Force Reserve; a lot of IT job career fields. It will give you that paid training plus it gives you that structure. The fact that she said she gave him a deadline to get a job and he met the deadline at the last second sounds like he is the personality type that needs to be told what to do otherwise he is content sitting around doing nothing.

That's how you know dave hasn't worked in fast food. Most positions are part time and a lot of those places are understaffed so they will schedule you for 39.5 hours just so you aren't full time

I'm exactly in that kids shoes right now failed out of uni because I feared failure, didn't even try just played video games and binged watched KZbin videos, It's exactly as Dave says I have no clear purpose lack self confidence and only went to uni because it felt like the next step, + parents said it was the only way to make them happy with me. I know I should just man up and work/study but willpower only gets me so far and once that motivation goes it's back to square one most of the time.

College is not what it used to be. It is different in many ways but the big one is that it costs much more than what it used to. Going into college can be overwhelming to the unprepared and responding with an agitated point of view can cause more problems than it is worth. I can relate with issues of anxiety of the future and the stress of life and harshly beating in the lessons erases the positivity of all other aspects of life. This kid does need a push into the right direction, however it should not end up becoming a shove.

College is good for two things, building up experience, the degree and possible work connections, but this kid wont make it there, he lacks the motivation to build-up connections with the professors that would possibly lead him to a job and he lacks the mindset to build-up experience there because he doesnt know what he wants to be.

Line up job shadowing... At least give him an idea of what's possible and get excited about it. My friend does commercial HVAC on skyscrapers, single mom asked him to take her son to work one day. He happily did, the kid loved it and now has an idea of what to aim for with his life. Not the kids fault for not knowing what he wants to do, so many options kids aren't even aware of

Sounds like me at 21. Now I make 6 digits as a software engineer. My mom thought I was just playing video games all the time when really I was building skills on my own. Didn't even graduate college. Didn't need it. That said, I knew plenty of gamers like this that were just gaming and had no direction too. Ramsey is right though - I agree 100%. If I had that fire when I was 21, I would've done a lot better with my life.

@@Light-vu6ws I was pretty advanced when I entered the field due to the engineering I picked up from trying to create games (mmo variety). I started around $80k with no professional experience and no diploma because I could walk the walk and talk the talk. Took me only 2 years to get bumped up to $100k+. Raises are a bit slower now. If you can prove that you are better than the kid with the diploma, companies will take you over them any day of the week. Take a lower starting salary with a prove-it mentality, and companies WILL reward you. That said, I didn't enter the field professionally until about 27...that's why I said I could've done a lot better with my life had I learned certain lessons about discipline and direction earlier in life.

If the son chose not to go to college, that's ok. He is working and should pay off his student loans. Mom is worried because he is not sure, but she can only guide and direct and not enable. Help him set up a plan to pay off the loans first. Then while he is living at home, he should pay some nominal form of rent. (If mom doesn't need the money, set it aside for him) Give him a year to get on track.. She can return the saved funds to him to get his own place or pursue school again if he chooses. She sounds like believe this is HER failure, so she can easily fall in the trap of trying to do too much to fix things.

When I have kids I fully intend on teaching them while college can be very valuable it’s a huge financial decision. I will not even consider co-signing any loans or giving them money unless and until they agree to extensive research on financial aid, take personal finance courses, and present a concrete plan to pay it off. I also fully expect them to exhaust all possible efforts to save money/cut costs (scholarships, test prep for higher scores, tutoring, working, research costs etc). They need to know how to coupon, price match, cut back on nonessentials etc and live within their means.

College is not for everyone and Fran's son learned that a bit too late. I have friends who fell victim to this exact thing, thanks to the outdated American Public School system that teaches regurgitation and, worse yet, stifles the most important quality sought by future employers: thinking. That's what family is for-to catch you on your stumbles. I don't see any harm in helping him out with these loans with a payment plan. He's lost, yes. Don't let him wander (and accrue unnecessary interest). He needs to seek out a mentor and bounce back. Maybe seek one out for him? Best of luck!

If this kid is willing to put in the work and effort to learn how to code, he won't even need a degree. My brother is a software engineer (albeit with a degree) who got his start the same way Dave recommended to this mother. He got together with successful guys in his desired field at coffee shops and eventually helped them with their various projects. That experience and connection eventually lead to a full time job. Plus, he has two friends who don't have degrees but still make serious bank -- if they weren't in San Francisco, they could easily afford their own houses -- all because they can code.

Here's my guidance to my kids. Unless they get a full scholarship then they would have to do Jr college for first two years, live at home and work so they can save up for 4 yr college. We may pay for his junior year in college but that's not guaranteed so at best he is obligated to pay his senior year. Don't take student loans and fund your lifestyle with it. As a grad gift, we can pay for a trip of their choosing to celebrate their accomplishment. Other option is to join the military and use GI Bill to pay for college. This conversation needs to start when they hit freshman in HS not a few months before graduation.

I work for a LTL trucking company that is one of many that are always hiring guys/ gals on the dock to load and unload trailers with a forklift. These jobs pay upwards to $22+ and hour. With the shortage of qualified drivers these companies are sending these dock workers through our driving school to become professional truck drivers. People snarl their noses up at truck drivers but the pay range for my job with NO college degree or debt is from $60-$100+k a year. Their are good paying jobs that don’t require you to go into a mountain of school debt to obtain a decent living.

Best thing my parents did for me after I left highschool. I had to payback every penny they loaned me, and when we were desperately poor, I did yard work, house work, and office work for them to earn some money. Once I left highschool they didn't give me a dime (except christmas presents). They even sold me an old car when ours broke down past repair. I did alot of oil changes, to pay for that car. $25 an oil change, both cars they owned, every three months for three years. Dad was nice enough to let me use his tools to do my own at the same time.

College is great for some people and not for others. People should explore college but also perhaps trade school or something similar. I also would like to know the circumstances as to why he dropped out. Sometime's it's depression or an undiagnosed learning disability (not all the time, of course), which leads to dropout. I really didn't care for Dave's tone with this call.

If hes into computers, he could get a job at a tech store like micro center (if one is near him), walmart working near electronics or even going to like a computer store where they do repairs and whatnot. Many of them will be more reliable, pay more, and provide better benefits, and will give more hours and in some cases overtime.
