They did not need a lot of chakra, so they were hard for Naruto to make with his massive amounts of chakra. Like someone trying to dig a small hole with a big spade. The shadow clones are stronger and more corporeal. They also need more chakra, so ironically, they were easier for Naruto to make.

REGULAR shadow clone jutsu(meaning JUST ONE) isn't a big deal. Kakashi, Itachi, Kiba, etc use it. It's when you start dividing it into 3 or more that it becomes impressive. Multi-shadow clone jutsu was inside the scroll, not just shadow clones.

Naruto's biggest asset is..... HIS INTELLIGENCE. After Shikamaru, Naruto is easily the smartest character in the show. Naruto and Sasuke break the water prison thanks to....Naruto's ingenious plan of transforming a clone into a shuriken. There are a LOT of great moments in the show where Naruto shows off how smart he is (another example from Shippuden, he transforms himself into a rasenshuriken while his clone jumps up with two rasengans to take out the resurrecting pain path).

Pranay Venkatesh Instead of intelligence, I think I would use the term battle IQ or battle instincts. In terms of raw intelligence, he’s nowhere near people like Shikamaru. I always took it that Naruto should rightly have been strong. He has the genes of Minato, the Fourth AND Uzumaki genes - the only pure blood descendants of the Senju (Hashirama's bloodline). The only reason he was weak at first was because of the seal that was blocking Kyuubi's chakra also disrupted the flow of his chakra, making it so he struggled to control his chakra for jutsu. I think that was the case until Jiraiya eased up the seal when he took him as a student.

I also wanna mention that in shippuden people don’t realize how much of an amp naruto got. Kakashi stated that the majority of naruto s chakra was suppressing the kyuubi when he was learning rasenshuriken. I think people forget that naruto is a genius a full blown one seriously, think about the rasengan, sage mode, shadow clones, rasengan variants and control of the nine tail was all done under 18 most under or just 16, he took down s class and even SS class ninja at 16-18 look at everyone else who’s his age none is doing the same except sasuke, naruto is a battle prodigy and that can’t be denied with his untamed knowledge and creativity for battle strategy he is up there with sasuke who was considered a generational prodigy like his brother itachi, naruto just didn’t have the resources to make him recognised as one, he is more like Minato then people let on to be honest

I'll say this until someone proves otherwise...Naruto should have been promoted to Chunin after the Chunin Exam. If Shikamaru was just calculating moves that would lead to checkmate with Temari, Naruto was manipulating Neji to move where he needed him to be. Boy analyzed Neji skills solo, created Shadow Clones with an obvious pattern to find the real one, only to fake him out when he created more later. After that didn't work and he lost his used of chakra, he used the Kurama's chakra for a boost and, in the middle of pushing Neji to his limits, created a Shadow Clone to play possum, only to dig underground and sucker punch him later. Truthfully, along with Shikamaru and Temari, he was the only other ninja that showed some level of strategizing, even if it was in the moment.

The reason he wasnt promoted wasnt just the strategy. A chuunin needs to know when a strategic retreat is needed. Naruto doesnt back down nearly killing him in a few cases if it wasnt for kyubi. He needs to strategize like he does im the moment but to also strategize and coordinate a plan with his team.as well as and lead others. At this stage leading would have put his group in danger. the same is true for neji.

those are nice tricks and awesome ideas but naruto charged too recklessly and depended on high risk strategies with no guarantees plus those were spur of the moment decisions he didnt plan to make an explosion he did then thought that his nexr move would be to burrow underground he didnt strategize he created new tactics which were awesome but none the less still real time tactics not strategy a leader should have strategy and the ability to think ahead which he and neji lacked temari showed some promise but not enough as she wasnt aware of her surroundings

Pretty wild that Naruto is constantly non-stop chopping his chakra in half whenever he uses the shadow clones, and still somehow has enough chakra to be throwing around rasengans (and later rasenshurikens and tailed beast bombs) like they're fucking candy.
