Today we will be discussing the kidney disease diet, how to eat right when you have chronic kidney disease (CKD). Have you or a loved one been diagnosed with kidney disease? Do you want to do your best to keep that kidney disease from worsening, or progressing to dialysis? Are you a dialysis patient who is struggling with what you should and should not eat? Or are you a totally healthy person with healthy kidneys, and you intend to keep it that way? Well today, I'm going to give you five tips on the kidney diet, how to eat properly when you have kidney disease, and how to prevent it.

This video is intended to be informational only. It is not a medical consultation, nor is it personalized medical advice. For medical advice, please consult your physician.
The best diet for kidney function varies depending on your percent of kidney function, or your eGFR estimated glomerular filtration rate. Be sure to consult your physician, and ask what your EGFR is. If your EGFR is less than 60 milliliters per minute, then you will benefit from a kidney diet. Remember, today I'm going to give you some guidelines for the kidney diet, but you need to consult your physician, and your nutritionist, to find out the specifics of the kidney diet that are best for you. Okay, let's get started. Five tips for the kidney diet, how to eat properly when you have kidney disease.
5 Kidney Disease Diet Tips
1. Protein Intake
2. Practice Low Salt Intake
3. Proper Potassium Intake
4. Phosphorous Intake
5. Water Intake
These are some general guidelines on a proper kidney disease diet, how to eat properly with kidney disease. And I threw in some tips on how to try to prolong your good kidney function if you have no kidney problems. I just want you to live your healthiest, happiest life.

I have CKD and was at 17 GFR a year ago even with restricted amount of meats & fish diet as recommended. Since then I decided to change to vegetarian diet after talking to my nephrologist. I wanted to prolong and stabilize my kidneys function as long as I can. Since then it went from 17 GFR to 20 GFR within 3 months. I am now at 21 GFR. I cook my own food and stick with healthy diet with lower sodium, whole foods, tofu, beans, garbanzo, lots of vegetables. I do have cheat days here and there but I am very limited to what I want to eat in small portion. I hope this helps.

I wish that were true but look at the rise in Covid cases & death! People politically refusing to get vaccinated to save their lives their family & others . All sorts of tomfoolery & stupid excuses, until they realize that they can’t breathe & going on a ventilator 😢 how sad is that ? Covid doesn’t care about their rights or how they feel !! That virus 🦠 is a devil straight from the pits of hell! Worse than any disease the doctor is trying to educate us about! Yet people will not get vaccinated and are reinfecting the vaccinated people ! Enough is enough now this virus is being called the virus of the unvaccinated & it truly is !!!

Hi Dr.FRITA. Great info, I have had ckd for over 10 years, and I would like to tell people never give up,remain strong, and discipline one's self. My GFR - 30-35 remained stable for 10 years + . When diagnosed with ckd i knew then i needed to change my lifestyle, my diet mainly consists of vegetables, red onions, salads ,fish, olive oil, nuts, green tea and water. Excluded alcohol, salt, sugar, red meat, coke etc. My nephroligist is amazed ,stable over 10 yrs . Love to all, never give up. PS,I wonder if my meditation and sun gazing has helped?? Who knows.

Ive heard some pretty good things about it and my cousin got amazing success with it.

This channel is exactly what I’ve been looking for! I have a GFR of 33. I’ve been trying to find out what amounts of protein, sodium, potassium, phosphorus I should be ingesting. Also, what amount of water I should be drinking. I definitely want to do what it takes to avoid dialysis. You are an excellent teacher and speaker. I’m a retired trauma nurse so I understood what you were saying. But, your explanations are very clear and concise for lay people? I’ll definitely watch your posts. Thanks, so much!

The hardest thing at first was how bland everything was and how I felt trapped into such a restricted diet. As I began to adjust to the low sodium in my diet I started exploring different nuts, fruits and vegetables. This added some flavor and variety to my diet. One great side effect is that I lost 60 lbs in the first year on this diet.

I have noticed two things when it comes to any dieting, especially when it comes to struggling to keep up with it. 1. Instead of focusing on what you CAN'T eat, you MUST focus on what you CAN eat :) this one ties into the psychology side of it. It will automatically make changing your diet much easier, because it is an optimistic approach. 2. It is important to change one's view on processed, unhealthy foods. Rather than reminding yourself that it's simply not good for you, you have to change your perspective on it entirely. Processed food is NOT food. You can even go as far as viewing it as poison. But simply viewing processed items as NOT FOOD will eventually help you not even crave crappy food anymore. In fact, the idea of consuming processed food will almost make you feel queasy, which is natural. :) I hope this helps anyone who struggles with diet changes. I promise these simple tricks will help tremendously! Good luck!

Thank you for taking the time to offer this information. I have Alport Syndrome and am currently stage 4 with a GFR of 28-32 the majority of the time. I have no swelling at all and usually stay pretty dry despite my fluid intake. I was told to intake up to 80 ounces a day, but not necessarily all water because it tends to wash down the sodium and make it low. Of course not everyone is the same, but we all end up at the same conclusion. All of these tips are helpful, and should be followed as closely as possible. I have stated off failure for about 7 years doing all of these things. Stay blessed friends!

I have learned more on youtube than from any doctor. One thing to keep in mind is your phosphorus intake. I first started seeing a kidney doc several yrs ago, trying to improve my kidney function naturally...and not one doctor ever mentioned reducing how much phosphorus I take in. 2 different primary care physicians, 2 different nephrologists, and a 2 day and 5 day hospital stay....nobody has ever mentioned phosphorus. I learned that right here on youtube from people like the good Dr. Frita. Phosphorus is in a lot of foods...especially packaged foods. And even healthy things like nuts, seeds, and chickpeas. How come no doctor in several yrs has ever mentioned that! Its been drug after drug after drug after drug! Thank you for the work that you do Dr. Frita!!

@@suzih.6687 i’m not a medical person, but my understanding is it depends on your own blood results. Do you need to reduce potassium? Do you need to reduce phosphorus? Do you need to reduce proteins? Do you need to reduce sodium (that one’s a probable yes because most people get way too much sodium). It takes a while to work your way into a functional and healthier diet for kidney disease. In the meantime she did make some suggestions, eat some small portions of fish or lean chicken for protein. Fruits that can be good are pineapple, blueberries, red grapes. Some dietitians recommend white bread instead of whole wheat, white rice same. If you have eggs, just have the whites. Remember even the whites are high in proteins so don’t eat too many.

I'm interested to hear about your husband. I'm in my 80's and my nephrologist said I'm too old for dialysis, he said dialysis is for young people.. I've been shocked by this attitude. Several times I have had occasion to think medical care is limited in my country (USA) for old folks. I may have to find another doctor, not sure what I will do. The best of luck to you and your husband. I have time left, not quite ready for dialysis.

I have to drink 80 ounces of water daily, no other drinks are allowed. I am also on a strict diet, however doing those things has helped my kidney disease stay in check and I am feeling much better. At first the diet was very difficult, however after getting in that habit, I no longer have problems staying on it. The hardest thing to give up for me was nothing with baking powder or soda in it, cakes, cornbread and all that good stuff went out the window. Thanks for such an informative video.

Thanks Doc. for your valuable videos!🥰 My new nephrologist is not too happy😐 & seems bored when my labs returned WNL & stable. Calls me “moderate CKD”. She wondered why I made appt. She’s accustomed to seeing later stages of CKD. During the pandemic I’d advanced from stage 2 to 3A. I was shaking the salt & eating for comfort. (which I never did before). All my IM doctor said was “drink more water”. My GFR is holding @59. During pandemic it was 57. NOT trying to advance to next stage! I drink 64 oz water daily & walk/exercise daily. I do NOT have ⬆️ BP, nor diabetes. My CKD maybe dNa related. It’s really my dietician & you, Dr. Freda, who’ve helped me understand how & what to eat for BETTER kidney health. At first I was sad & overwhelmed; didn’t know what to eat. Then I learned abt the nutritional values in food; chose better options & use PORTION control. VERY important. Also used info from NKF. I no longer can have generous servings of those delicious baked•IN•the skins sweet potatoes & a big (HUGE) “plate” of greens together. (Nor that slice of Chocolate Suicide cake, oozing in decadence!😋) I learned how to leach the potassium amt from potatoes & eat abt 1/4 cup. I sautée kale/greens vs cooking in water/liquids & have 1/2 c. I’m a NON-recovering CHOCOholic, but limit my amt to ONE square of dk. Choc., 72% Cocao. I enjoy that w/1 cup of green or oolong tea. Daily. Thanks again! 🙏🏽 🌹😊

Good morning doctor. Thank you so much for letting us know things to do when it come to kidney infections. I just lost a colleague to kidney failure. She was asked not to take water, but she kept on saying she is thirsty and she went ahead to take much water, well her liver got infected too and there was no money for paying a donor and to do a transplant. It was to cost her eighteen million Naira and because of no help, she ran out of paying for dialysis two times in a week. May her gentle soul rest in peace. Thank you for this handy information.

Thank you Dr. I'm undergoing hemodialysis now for 2 yrs and 4 months. When I started dialysis procedure I still have normal amount of urine but has swelling of both feet. After 5-6 months of dialysis my urine is gone. My Nephro recommended hemodialysis and I agree immediately that very day. I don't even understand why I'm CKD and what stage of CKD I am. Only on your very clear explanation that eGFR must be known. I only heard about it from you. Now I'm regreting I agree to undergo hemodialysis which can be avoided when I know my sGFR thru proper diet intake . I thought dialysis is a procedure that cures kidney disease.Thank you I know what to asked my Nephro doctor during consultation.
