I know I leaned to give the homeless food, water, anything other than money. Yes it is amazing to give a little bit of money, but you really have to trust that that person will spend it wisely. Giving them food and water helps them more than you’d know.

I do the same thing. I give the homeless food and water rather than cash. Some I've invited to live with me to help them get back on their feet. All of them obeyed my house rules and treated me with respect, and got jobs, or I helped them get disability benefits. I've been homeless, but I never asked anyone for any money. I asked people if they ever needed odd jobs done. I'd show them my ID, and tell them they could secure my backpack in a safe place so they know I wouldn't steal anything of theirs without having to lose everything I owned in the process. That gathered their precious trust, and I always honored that trust. I did mostly indoor cleaning because I'm not a handyman and have major allergies to pollen, so I can't do repairs of anything or gardening. But something to eat, a shower, clothes laundered, a night on the sofa, and some extra cash was well worth the effort of several hours cleaning their house. In 1998, a few months after I got out of the Army and was practically homeless immediately, I saw an old lady in a slightly worn down 1984 Jeep Grand Wagoneer SUV, parked on the side of the road with her hood up. She was able to get the engine "running" but had no power. I looked inside the engine and saw a wheel spinning, and noticed that there was no belt on it. I pushed her vehicle over a mile to a mechanic and explained the issue to them. Pushing the SUV was easy for me, as in the Army, we pushed Humvees and 5 ton trucks with our bare hands for PT on a weekly basis. She tried to give me $20, but I said, "No thanks, ma'am. A good deed in the name of Christ is its own reward." She took my hands, prayed with me, then opened her purse and gave me all the cash she had, a little over $150. She said "You deserve it for being caring, honest, reliable, and a loving man of God." I thanked her and said, "But what about the cost of the mechanic?" She smiled and said, "Don't worry. I have plenty of money in the bank for that. Please take this. And I'd like to invite you to stay at my place so you can get back on your feet." I was reluctant, but she was so charming that I gave in. She was a widow, and her children lived out of state, so there was nobody around to help her. I did chores around the apartment for her and also cooked. I was able to get a job relatively quickly, and paid a little in rent as I continued to earn more money. I eventually moved on when I had plenty of money, but we stayed in contact. She died in 2005, but she willed me her Jeep and some of her other property and a few thousand dollars. I still have the Jeep. I've had it modified and it's a true showstopper now! God bless you Doris. You're missed.

Well coming from someone who was for a time, money can definately help to go to a dollar store and get things for hygiene or something. Food is important too but they can decide what to spend money that they're given too like any other person.
