The brilliant thing about a lot of Bruce's characters is that they make you die laughing but if you think about their backstory too much they almost make you want to cry. Gavin, the lady from "Potato Salad," and the little kid from "Can I Keep Him?" who brings home a businessman. The KITH guys are one of the best comedy ensembles going, still.

I love that the kids in the hall show real empathy towards their characters and their backstories while also being able to balance that with the funniest sketch comedy I've ever seen. This is the reason "Can I Keep Him?" is my favorite comedy sketch of all time, it manages to get you to truly care about these people on a deep emotional level despite their absurd situation, and then hits you with the truly bizarre "cooked oatmeal" ending played completely straight which makes you realize how much you bought into all the other weird stuff. Other comedy troupes would focus solely on the premise since the broad strokes are funny enough, but kids in the hall creates full worlds for their characters to exist in and it always just feels so special

Its what I think makes their Drag roles really stand out. Some older comedy is just "har har, guy in a dress", but you kinda almost forget when kathie and Cathy are having their chitchats, and Fran is fretting about something, or Francesca Fiore is doing her whole tempestuous lover thing with Bruno Puntz Jones or whatever. They're all such rich characters and the guys fully inhabit their worlds. Its just fantastic worldbuilding and humanity
