Children should not be considered thieves or criminals when they "steal" medicine for their sick mother and otherwise have never, ever been in contact with the police or the justice system. The entire fault lies with the healthcare and social policy in a society that pretends to be prosperous, democratic and civilized. The mere fact that these children were arrested, have to appear before a judge and are also punished, speaks volumes about the country in question! The fact that this judge apparently knows what is going on and gives it a, let's say, more refined and yet very empathetic twist, does not change the matter as far as the failed policy is concerned.

There's nothing great about this. The mom point blank said she doesn't have money to get medicine or even food technically. But yet, if she drives she's now expected to take her kids back-and-forth to the food bank. What if the food bank is like 45 minutes or like an hour away from where she is? Even if it's not, she now has to waste a ton of her gas that she doesn't have money for to do this thing that she could be spending that on medicine or food if she had the money. The fact the matter is, she doesn't have the money. She now has to pay for gas and whatever things they need.Them to do with the food bank. Have you seen the price of gas per gallon? Literally? He didn't help the family. He hindered them.

There are people who get free medical care, so why cannot this mother. I am mad at the drug store. The manager could have asked why they were stealing. When/if the children stated they were $5 short, the manager could have given a short message and let them purchase the medicine. This is what's wrong with today's world. Lack of compassion, understanding, and being helpful. I wish this store was near me. I would be having words with those people. If I had been in the store, I would have paid for the medicine telling the store idiots to leave the children alone. It would not have the only time I did this.

It’s great that kids looking out for their mother but the judge is right they need a lesson to be learned and give them a chance to help others and understand that stealing is a bad idea even if you have good intentions it’s always good to know what you should do and what to not do. It’s great that they are doing good in school so they can do good things in life but they will have more opportunities to learn and to help others so they don’t fall into even bigger situations.

Wait 2 questions: - Why weren't these kids appointed a lawyer. - Why wasn't the case thrown out for lack of persecution? Sure it's wrong to steal. But if no one representing the state / city showed up, these kids should have walked free as a bird. If the state attorney can't manage a calendar, there's consequences for that too. You don't come to court, you wave your right to have your side heard. No one to testify, no crime. If I were the judge, the kids would have been told what you did was wrong and we better not see you back, but if an un-represented / pro se minor showed up and the prosecution didn't sgow up, they would be out the door with a dismissed case and a referral to human resources.

9:15 This is a bitter and sweet story unfortunately it’s both- but they are children that was so worried about their MOM and it led them to stealing some medicine for their mother. They were scared. Scared little children and no child should have to feel like this. Thank you to the judge that he gave them community service to teach them to allow them to learn value which they - I think they already know because you can tell the mother has taught them wisely. ❤ such a beautiful family and I hope the mama gets better soon as we speak. I understand where judge porter is coming from. He simply wants to be a “father” figure to these children. What he ultimately wanted to do was to say that he’d let it slide for now but by doing so he’d be telling the children that stealing is ok. He just doesn’t want the children to think hey we got away with meds when mom was sick so now why not steal that new video game system or whatever. That’s all. That’s why he sentenced them to community service. But he also chose to make them do thier hours at a food bank. A place that would benefit them and the mother with food. He also referred the mom to social services, where she could find work and sign up for benefits like Medicaid. Porter is a very fair and compassionate person.

So he just sat there and said he can't punish the mom for something that kids did. However that's exactly what he just did. And say she gets one in like the next couple days, but just keep taking her kids. 2 community service and pick them up new offense, but like this kind of seems like you put more burden on a lady. Then he did on the kids.
