Aron Snyder talks about how he uses land navigation techniques while hunting, and going in on a stalk. This is great information for anyone that has stalked an animal out West, and lost the animal due to changes in your surroundings as you get close. Aron uses a rangefinder to find the distance from the glassing point to the destination, and the opposite while approaching the animal. He also uses an Azimuth to calculate the angle of approach, prior to and during the stalk. Watch to learn more.
Aron's Garmin M-9 can be purchased here:

I looked it up. You are correct in your terminology, “Back Azimuth”. That’s a new one to me and maybe others here too. With many years of navigating oceans, I have always used the term Reciprocal Course…

Good info. Might be easier to explain Back Asmuth if you put a "you are here" in the middle of the compass. Very useful info, especially using the backpack for a reference point. Hadn't heard of that.

For anyone in the southern hemisphere thinking of buying that Suunto M-9 wrist compass, don't bother, as it is balanced SOLELY for the upper-half of the northern hemisphere and will be a little bit janky nearby the equator and absolutely TERRIBLE anywhere in the southern hemisphere. So yeah, Aussies, Kiwis, South Americans and Africans should completely avoid that wrist compass unless you intend to travel to the northern hemisphere with it. To cut a long story short, the south-side of the compass disk drags along the bottom of the liquid-filled casing and cannot spin freely when you're too close to the south pole. The sad reality is that no company manufactures a wrist-worn sighting compass that is balanced for the southern hemisphere as most of the world's customers of pretty much any product are in the northern hemisphere, so that's the part of the planet they balance most of their compasses for, including the M-9...
