Vividly remember asking my roommate why a certain sorority was considered "bottom tier". Without missing a beat she casually says, "because their girls are ugly." But sure.. it's about grades and character.. 😂

Yep, it's terrible but that is truly how it seemed sororities were "ranked" when i rushed 12 years ago. The "less attractive" girls, or the girls who don't fit the stereotype of what a typical sorority girl is thought to be get pushed to the "bottom tier" sororities. I started to rush, got bad vibes from the whole process, and dropped out after a few days. I'm sure it's a positive experience for some people, but it definitely was not for me.

As someone who was in a sorority, I cannot emphasize enough how draining it was on my mental health. Yes, I met a lot of amazing friends who are still my friends today even though being in Greek life made me feel so bad. Even with the intensity and rejection of rush taken out of it, you still are constantly forced to do events like meetings, formals, philanthropy, fund raising, etc. Then you have pressure and judgement from your sisters and girls from other sororities. The positive is that it made me get a much stronger back bone because I was dealing with constant scrutiny from someone out there. I joined the Soroity my campus rated as “the kindest” hoping that was the case but even there everybody was hating on each other all the time. It’s like a constant war for no reason. Oh and I went to CU Boulder which isn’t even that into Greek life so I can’t imagine how much worse it would be at schools where being in Greek life means a lot to the people that go there.

He was put in a basement with 11 other pledges and made to drink 6 handles of vodka over the course of one night. I went to a large midwestern state university on the mid 90s, & the summer before college, all the girls I worked with were older sorority girls. They were super sweet to me, & convinced me to rush... after orientation, I walked home with another girl from my dorm, & convinced her that we didn't need to rush, because "we didn't need to buy our friends", which is how orientation made me feel. I dropped out, but I did get invited to a post rush dinner at one of the houses. It was so awkward, & definitely not for me. I made some amazing friends in college, that I'm still close to, despite the distance, & had a ton of fun, including going to a couple frat parties a week for the free beer when I was underage. At this point in my life, I think Panhellenic sororities & fraternities perpetuate the power of the entitled children of wealthy white people, & are bad for our society. I knew girls in different sororities that had to do wild stuff like their big sister’s homework, hold their jackets at parties, one girl got a nipple burned off and her chapter got kicked off campus. It just gave you g people with brains that haven't fully developed the chance and power to think up dumb and dangerous shit just to prove ones dedication to the organization. I'm very aware of the differences, that's why I'm so interested in all of this. Truthfully for me it's the idea that one can de-pledge and then go on to become a member of another house! This might be a good place to share my experience with rushing. I rushed at my small college (which only had 4 sororities to choose from). There was one in particular I REALLY wanted to be in. There was another that was okay, and I didn't like the other two very much. The one I wanted to get into, I tried my best to put out a good impression. I was nice and socialable to everyone and bonded with the president of the sorority herself (we were both in color gaurd and had actually completed against each other at one point!). I joked, made people laugh, got compliments, talked about how I was passionate about their philanthropy. thought for sure I would get in. Nope. I was dropped. Didn't even get a bid for my second choice. Most girls got 2-3 bids, and I only got one. I felt so rejected, and I have no idea what I even did wrong. And I was kind of on the fence of Greek life to begin with! I can't imagine how devestaring it is to be rejected by something you put your whole entire life into like that.

This is such nostalgia in a weird way - I was never in a sorority, but I went to a school in the South with a VERY active Greek life (FSU) and one of my college roommates was in one of these sororities. Poor girl slept through every alarm for her classes, I honestly don't know how she was still enrolled as a student. It's also funny how much emphasis is on the outfits - I have very vivid memories of watching the girls at the end of rush walking barefoot in the florida heat with their heels swung over their shoulders and their lashes coming off due to all the sweat. On a darker note, this was right before schools started cracking down on Greek life for hazing and underage drinking. One of my roommate's sisters was at a party with a fraternity where they all got drunk and someone got ahold of a shotgun and was playing around with it. She was shot blank, and unfortunately didn't make it. Imagine being a young adult, first time on your own, and your life is cut short in such a brutal way. As you mentioned in the video, the finances are run by students, all of this is run by students, and that's not always a safe environment when alcohol is involved as it inevitably is in college life. Not to mention my school had a well-known history of r*pe and SA, to the point that they had to put advertisements in the bus saying "93% of FSU men would say something if they saw their friend doing something non-consensual" ...or something like that. It just drew attention to the percentage of men that didn't, and it really made me worry for a lot of these girls.

I remember going to some seminar when I was in high school (in Florida) where sorority alums were instructing us how to get in a sorority. I thought it was insulting. They told us how to dress and “sell ourselves”. Not only did it repulse me, but I could NEVER be part of any organization that was not based on merit whose “exclusivity” was solely based on turning down other people. So I went to an all- women college that had NO sororities. By the tone of my post, you can tell what I think of sororities. And I became a lawyer and fight against entitled people like this. It’s only “their world” if you let them trample over everyone else.
@suzannecoe43472 жыл бұрын
@Alex Korova I know that, to a degree, every one of us “sells themselves” daily. But being told specifically what to wear (“wear designer items that are colorful and memorable”), what to say and not say - all so people will want to be friends with me struck me as a poor start to the “real” friendships that the seminar was allegedly fomenting. The seminar, itself, was by “invite only” - just like the sororities themselves. I couldn’t IMAGINE myself turning away a girl who just wanted to feel included. Entry that is not based on merit (which most sororities do NOT judge “merit”- unless “merit” means looks and money) are just pretexts where their “exclusivity” is solely based on turning away people who want to belong. I just think it is cruel and shallow.
@HayleighPaige Жыл бұрын
Right!! I’ve learned to “sell myself” in my profession, but that’s completely different to this (at least in my profession.) I sell my expertise, my knowledge, my honesty, and intolerance for bullshit. I never would have made it in a sorority. I wear what I want, I have the tattoos that I want (very visible), and I aim to let my talents speak for me. And so far, it’s worked! It’s wild to think that a person could be turned away from a sorority just because of how they dress or brands they wear is WILD because what the hell does that say about their talents and qualities and perspectives?? And sororities are supposedly for community and friendship and philanthropy? Ew. Yikes. Also I’m Mexican, so I don’t think I would’ve made it anyway, but that’s a whole other point 😂

I remember over work week as a sorority member at Bama years ago (10+) prepping for rush week and we were required to get approval on our outfits that we chose for the week. We were lined up one by one and told in front of our peers if we were ok to proceed with the outfit or not. I remember hearing them tell some girls they had to wear spanks under their dresses . It was so uncomfortable. I dropped after a couple years in and I still think back to how much of a high control group they were and it’s baffling to see this is a coveted practice. I take some good things from my time in a sorority, but overall, I’d say it’s overhyped and my best years were out of the sorority.

I was in a scholarship program that started 2 months before freshmen year, and we spent the whole summer together so I came into college with a tight-knit group of 25 people. When school actually started, nearly every girl joined a sorority and I was left in the dust because they were so stressed and strapped for cash and spending every moment with their sororities. I never ever felt like I wanted to join because I didn’t think I would fit in and they seemed like bullies. I have no regrets about not joining; the appeal of rushing or being in a sorority just never clicked for me.

Former sorority VP and Rho Chi / Gamma Chi (disaffiliated member for rush week) who went to a different school in the south! To explain the matching process there's a couple of things to know. Every night between the rounds both the sororities and the PNM's rank all of the houses, this data goes into a computer algorithm and matches for the next round based on these rankings. Its very much a mutual process and sororities spend hours on talking through each PNM's potential fit for their house talking through the conversations they had etc. Prior to rush starting sororities will research the PNM's to see who to pair them up with when they come through for different rounds based on common interests and home towns etc in order to make the conversations feel more natural and the PNM to feel like they 'fit in.' This gives the illusion to the PNM its pure coincidence that they talked to someone who also was a cheer captain in high school... Its also important to be aware that Panhellenic (the governing body of these sororities) oversees sororities that were founded for white women and this is why you may see at some institutions bama included may lack diversity. The NPAC (National Pan-Hellenic Council) is the overseeing body for traditionally black sororities and fraternities which were founded mostly at HBCU I waited until sophomore year to rush and was able to grow as a leader, friend and college student and despite being from the UK found a place in southern sorority life! I was fortunate my schools greek life system didn't have big houses so the dues (fees) were a lot less expensive so could easily afford to be a member $300 per semester. Many big schools still use manipulative tactics to recruit based on looks and privilege, and issues such as hazing are real, not all greek life is what is you on the movies and in bama rush Tok! Thanks so much for an amazing video Kiki :)

It was crowded, so I was handed a scrapbook to look at while we waited. I shit you not, I open this scrapbook and it is filled with pictures of MY BROTHER, who was a couple years ahead of me. I looked up and was like, “is this a joke?” The girl talking to me was like, “what do you mean?” So I said, “whose book is this?” The girl told me whose book it was and asked why. “Because these are all pictures of my brother. Here he is running down the street. Here he is walking down some stairs, here he is in the library - is (name) here? Can I talk to her?” The member goes, “oh, ok. Umm, hang on.” She left me, I see her go up to this one girl, whisper in her ear, and then they both run off. I didn’t get a house tour, I didn’t get to talk to anyone else - nothing. And then this house fucking DROPPED ME. Those stalking bitches. 😂😂

I’ll try to simplify this.. as the week goes on you write down a max # of certain houses in order of preference, it gets smaller as the week progresses. With each day day/round that passes someone from your choices has to also choose you in order to go back to that house to continue rush. So by pref day she had to narrow it down to 2-3. If all 3 want you, your top choice gets you. If your top choice doesn’t but your 3rd does.. that’s who gives you a bid. As long as there is a match up between your choices and the houses’ you continue. If not, you get cut/dropped the first time there isn’t a match. Does that make sense? lol

All I ever cared about in college was finding time to study between playing video games, my next meal, and my next sleep (I also went to Community College). This whole situation seems relentless and exhausting. As a INFP personally type I couldn’t imagine being in a big sorority.

This is so weird. I never have heard of this being like a reality show for college girls rushing sororities lmao. Anyways, I just need to say, sororities were never appealing to me because if not everyone can be a part of it, it’s exclusive and not inclusive and costs as much as it does (I have a lot of friends who have been in a sorority and my bf was in a fraternity so I know all about their dues), then I don’t want a part of it. That girl reminds me of the blonde princess from Princess and the Frog. 🤣 I mean, she seems sweet 🤷🏻♀️

MTV made a Sorority Life reality show, 2 seasons. The sororities that participated were locals (not national sororities that are part of the National Panhellenic Conference, which is the big governing body for the national fraternities and sororities with chapters all over the country at different colleges and universities). If you can find episodes, it’s a fun watch and a total product of its time, which was very early 2000s.

I was apart of greek like my first 2 years in college. Honestly, in the sorority I was apart of, the girls were super genuine (which is why I joined) but I ended up hating it because they literally force you to attend socials and events even if you don’t want to go and then end up making you pay fines for not attending on top of the money you’re already paying to be in the sorority… I felt very icky being apart of greek life so I got out of it and honestly can’t believe I stayed in it as long as I did 😬 it’s not for everyone… and yes, to answer your question about pref. day, your top sorority has to put you as well, and if you you both choose each other then you get a bid from them👍🏻

It sounds like a terrible system if both parties can only pick 1 top pick.. What if you really liked two houses but only your second pick chose you as their first pick? There are obviously only so many spots so it seems like there are much greater chances for there to be empty beds and girls with no bids who would love to have one of the empty spots on her second favorite house.. that means many girls wasted money to audition and the sorority girls having to pay fees for the empty rooms.. sounds ridiculous
@sasamafrass2 жыл бұрын
@@CHloE748 I was thinking the same thing, it's like they are creating the problem to make girls pay more on purpose. It seems completely ridiculous to me that you can't just join whatever organization you want since you are paying to be there, blows my mind.
@NatalieMarie9172 жыл бұрын
@@CHloE748 the sorority doesn’t actually do a ranking in that same way. They are just limited in how many people they can offer bids to. If you, the PNM, didn’t make the cut (e.g., you weren’t in their top 60), then you won’t receive a bid from them, but if your second choice offered you a bid (you were in their top 60), you’ll end up in their house. If they both offered you a bid, you go to your #1 choice.

I was in pageants growing up and won lots of awards. Older I got, the more I realized that the more money you give to the pageant, the more youll get noticed and the more fake awards you'll get. I was sponsored in my elementary years but not in my middle school or high school years so the completion's just got worse and worse. I remember telling my mom I hated them and didnt want to do them anymore. My mom pushed me to do one last one since I was aging out anyway (I was 13 or 15 at the time.) My last one sucked. I was absolutely humiliated on stage. I had clothes sponsors but no one paid the tuition so they let me go on with my sponsored outfits (which I was supposed to return) but when I put on my hand-me-down Kimono, they told me I couldnt go back on stage. I even had my friend of 10 years come. I was so embarrassing. I even was supposed to win a prize since all the others had voted for me but they wouldnt give it to me due to being poor. Another one I had gone to around my teen years was also sponsored clothes only and the girls who were rich got way more trophies then the ones who were not. I. Hate. Pageants. I havent been in on this Bama rush trend cause apparently I live under a rock, thank goodness. From this video, sororities seem like a massive cult. The thrive on unsuspecting individuals who have just become legal adults. Plus, those sorority houses are big enough to be schools, hospitals, charities, or even homeless shelters yet its shelter for rich kids instead. 32:56 Its definitely a cult. These kids or their parents are paying whoever actually owns thoses house rent and helping those owners keep those mansions as well as putting tons of extra money into the owners pocket. Its like a daycare for very rich immature adults. Supposedly each Bama sorority has up to 70 or more members and supposedly Bama has 24 sororities. Thats $661,500 per year per sorority house. How much do you think goes into the actual school? I actually feel like the school make more profit on the non-live in students because $9,445.00 is around 9 months of average monthly rent. As for non-live in students are not paying for rent in a dorm or sorority house so want his their $4,000.00-$5,000.00 a year going towards? It's almost like the sororities get free education as long as they can pay their annual rent in Bama Capa house and the non-live in's help pay for the sororities missing tuition costs. I went to this horrible HORRIBLE nanny college in 2010 and dropped out due to medical reason but still had to pay the whole tuition, which was like $6,000.00 for 1 year (it was like a 9 month course and I left after 3 months.) The first thing I was told by students was that the teachers (and founders) had renovated their houses the prior year and were renovating their houses again. The books were outdated, the teachers picked favorites, and the teachers couldnt even teach without looking at the books we were learning from. Just horrible! Theyd take the class out to eat as if it was to make us feel like we were getting our money worth buuut it was OUR money they were treating us with in the first place. All we were doing was making these 'teachers' rich. The school was co-founded by 2 woman who were teachers and there was another lady who was also a teacher (the better of the 3 since she was actually paid as a teacher and actually knew houw to teach. The other 2 co-founder teachers were just taking all the tuition money and blowing it on their houses every year.)

There’s a computer program that uses an algorithm to place you in your first or second option house based off how you and the sorority rank each other. Same one that “drops” you or the sorority after each day based off the score sheet you and the sorority fill out for each other. ETA: the reason someone might end up with a house on their schedule that they already dropped is because that house ranked that person extremely high.

Yeah, I wish I would have known prior to recruitment that your house is basically picked for you. And most sorority members don't know this, and that's why bid promising happens. The girls are going to vote for you super high and think that they can guarantee you a bid but they can't.
